StoneMtn
27/02/06George Michael quizzed by police over cannabis By BEN TAYLOR, Daily Mail George Michael was arrested for an alleged drug offence yesterday after being found slumped at the wheel of his car. A passer-by spotted the 42-year-old pop singer parked near the Hyde Park Corner roundabout in London at 1.50am. He was so worried that he contacted police. Officers from Scotland Yard arrived and woke Michael, who was immediately arrested on suspicion of being unfit to drive. He was taken to a central London police station and searched. Officers found two packets which they suspected may have contained cannabis and GHB - known as liquid Ecstasy. Michael, who lives in Hampstead, North London, was questioned about the discovery and bailed to return to a police station next month. Officers were satisfied that he had not been drinking and he was not thought to have been affected by drugs when he was arrested. The suspected drugs will be sent to a laboratory for testing. Jail threat Despite the relaxation of the law on cannabis, possession remains a criminal offence punishable by up to two years in jail. The drama comes eight years after Michael was arrested by an undercover police officer for an act of gross indecency in a public toilet in Los Angeles. At the time, he made light of the arrest, even dressing up as a police officer in a promotional video for a new single. If the substance is found to be illegal drugs, Michael is likely to receive a formal police caution - which would leave him with a criminal record. He would also find it difficult to travel to the U.S. - where he is still a household name - because of strict restrictions on those with drugs convictions. Last night a Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We were called at 1.50am by a member of the public to Hyde Park Corner, where a man was found slumped over the wheel of his car. "He was not driving and appeared to be OK, but he was arrested on suspicion of being unfit to drive. "He was taken to a police station and was searched. He was found to be in possession of a controlled substance, a Class C substance. "He was released on bail to return in March. He was de-arrested on the driving allegation. The substance will be sent for analysis." Michael, said to have a £60million fortune, has become something of a recluse in recent years - a far cry from the fresh-faced pin-up who became famous as one half of the Eighties duo Wham! and went on to enormous success as a solo artist. When he does venture out from his home, rarely in daylight hours, he is usually unshaven and wears loose casual clothing over his increasinglyrotund frame. Last year Elton John spoke of Michael's reclusive lifestyle saying: "George is in a strange place. There appears to be a deep-rooted unhappiness in his life." Michael, who kept his homosexuality a secret until he was caught in the LA incident, has a long-term partner, Kenny Goss. The couple, said not to have a monogamous relationship, are thought to be planning to marry under the new civil partnership laws. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Find this story at http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/showbiz/showbiznews.html?in_article_id=378377&in_page_id=1773©2006 Associated New Media

bradm
Did anybody else read the subject line for this topic and think, "What does George Michael know about cannabis that the British police don't?" I mean, it's good that he'd help provide them information about cannabis, but I think they'd have a cadre of experts they could rely on...Aloha,Brad
StoneMtn
Actually, the article first attracted my attention, because I thought they were "quizzing" George Michael on some entirely different matter "over" some cannabis, as in sharing some cannabis; like quizzing a person "over a coupla drinks".It really sounded like the article was going to be about a fairly pleasant, if not laid-back, meeting between Michael and the cops. Freak By Night
I sure thought the use of the word "quizzed" was kind of funny! Sounds like it was a high school test.A drug test, if you will.
Jaimoe
I guess it's still better than the last time George had a run-in with the cops.
