mark tonin
This is going to be an awesome concert! Here is the official press release for the show: For Immediate Release - January 2003 The Opera House - Toronto 735 Queen Street East Hotline # 416-466-0313 ************************************* 97.7 HTZ-FM & The Opera House present...An Evening With 2003 Grammy Nominee GOV'T MULE Wednesday, February 12, 2003 9:00PM - Tickets $31.50 adv/$38.00 door ************************************* 97.7 HTZ-FM and The Opera House are proud to announce an evening with Grammy-nominated GOV'T MULE in their first return appearance to Toronto, Canada since July 2000. Southern rockers Gov't Mule first acquired mainstream attention as the side project of two of the members of the Allman Brothers. In 1989, guitarist/vocalist Warren Haynes became the next in line to replace Duane Allman, providing a good foil for Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts; Allen Woody filled out the Allman sound on bass. Five years after joining the Brothers, the duo linked forces with Dickey Betts Band drummer Matt Abts to form Gov't Mule, a band in which the Allman Brothers sound is apparent but complicated with the psychedelic, bluesy power-trio feel of Cream. After releasing five albums, debuting in 1995 with their self-titled album, a vital member of the band was lost on August 26, 2000 when Allen Woody passed away unexpectedly. The band had been preparing to record its next album, and after a time, Gov't Mule decided to carry on with the recording of the album, but with a varied array of guest bassists eager to participate in the project. The calibre of the players in Gov't Mule is apparent by virtue of the musicians that have chosen to align themselves with the making of The Deep End Vols. I & II, including the likes of Jack Bruce (Cream), Les Claypool (Primus), Bootsy Collins (Parliament Funkadelic), John Entwistle (The Who), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Mike Gordon (Phish), Larry Graham (Sly & The Family Stone), Alphonso Johnson (Weather Report), Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead), Stefan Lessard (Dave Matthews Band), Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel), Me-shell N'degeocello, Jason Newsted (Metallica), Rocco Prestia (Tower of Power), Chris Squire (Yes), etc. Amongst the other guest musicians are Gregg Allman, Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains), David Grisman, James Hetfield (Metallica), Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones), John Medeski (Medeski Martin & Wood), Art Neville, and Billy Preston. Nominated for a 2002/2003 Grammy Award in the category of Best Rock Instrumental Performance is the song Sco-Mule off Deep End Vol. I, a collaboration between Gov't Mule (Warren Haynes and Matt Abts), John Scofield, Chris Wood (MMW), and Bernie Worrell (Parliament Funkadelic). Touring with them since September 2001 in support of The Deep End series has been a rotating lineup of musicians to round out the current quartet, including bass players Oteil Burbridge (Allman Brothers), George Porter Jr. (The Meters), Greg Rzab (Black Crowes), Dave Schools (Widespread Panic), and keyboard players Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones), and Rob Barraco (Phil Lesh & Friends). The current all-star Gov't Mule line-up features Warren Haynes on guitar and vocals, Matt Abts on drums, Danny Louis on keys, and Andy Hess (Black Crowes/David Byrne) on bass. The group's adventurism in the studio reflects their searing live shows, storming through funk, rock, blues, soul, folk and jazz terrain, which have consistently blown away audiences throughout the country. Here's a chance to catch combustible southern-fried rockers-on-the-rise Gov't Mule in a nightclub setting, before it's too late. Advance tickets on sale through Ticketmaster on Tuesday, January 14th at 10AM, Sonic Temple and Rotate This (Toronto) and Encore Records (Kitchener). Doors @ 8:00PM, Show @ 9:00PM, Tickets $31.50 Advance and $38 @ Door. For more information, visit www.mule.net or call The Opera House at 416-466-0313.
