I gotta say that I do not like watching UFC or UFC-type competitions. I love pugilism and have been in my fair share of fisticuffs over the years, but I just find the sport even more barbaric than even Thai boxing. I do love boxing, but these two sports are often compared even though they are nothing alike. Have you ever noticed that UFC fans could pass as WWE fans?

But... that dude is one tough S.O.B..

I agree, I prefer Pride Fighting Championship much more. Similar type of fighting, but in a ring, mostly in Japan. The fans there are much more interested in the technical aspects of fighting - instead of booing when the fighters are on the ground for more than a minute, the Japanese fans are almost silent, cause they know what's going on. Bas was one of the announcers at Pride for a long time, until just recently.

Boxing is definately the more barbaric sport. In boxing, when someone gets knocked down, they give them a standing 8 count and then send them back in. That's when people get seriously injured, sometimes permanently.

In UFC fighting, the instant someone gets in trouble, the fight is called immediately, preventing any serious injuries. I also find it way more interesting to watch as it reqires much more skill and strategy.

Plus I have not noticed any similarity between WWE fans and UFC fans - no mullets or Hulkamaniacs where I've been, must be an eastern thing ;)

Well, there's no rabbit and kidney punches, elbows and knees to the groin in boxing. Not all boxing has standing 8 counts. However, there may be no sport as traditionally corrupt as boxing. Whether you feel UFC athletes are more talented is debatable. Every interview/article I've read involving UFC partipants and boxers reveals mutual admiration for both sports. Boxing is a martial art, albeit arguably a brutal one, with unbelievable athletes with skills to boot. Watch Floyd Mayweather's upcoming bout with Golden Boy Oscar de la Hoya for added proof. In over 30 years of watching boxing, I've never seen a guy that can put punching power with speed and agility like Mayweather, including Sugar Ray Leonard. Ali is the only exception, but he was already finished when I watched him lose to Leon Spinx live - when they used to show fights live on regular TV.

i'd say boxing is a more technical sport all around.

I don't agree. It's apples and oranges - the UFC guys are specialists in the own martial art group, be it karate, ju-jitsu, judo, taekwando, Thai boxing etc...

I just think pro boxing attracts the better all-round athletes given the money involved - I'm talking professional sports only.

Well, they are extremely different sports. UFC is much closer to wrestling than boxing, that's why I think there's more skill involved. There are many ways a UFC fighter can win, from submission to knock out etc. - sometimes the smaller guy kicks the big guys ass. I find boxing kind of boring to watch, body shot, head shot - what else? ...and yeah, of course they are both barbaric sports - that's why we like to watch them!

That's part of why I find UFC boring. Grapple, pin, rabbit-punch, wrestle, submission.

I don't like comparing these two sports because they are more dissimilar than similar. One thing comparable is when the UFC combatants stick to throwing punches a la boxing. When that happens, they show their limitations.

Oh yeah, I've definately seen some boring UFC fights, like when the heavy weights come out for instance - they move too slow... but the good bouts are far more exciting than any boxing match I've seen. It's clearly a personal taste thing...

The grudge match between Matt Hughes and Georges St. Pierre a few months ago was amazing, that's the kind of barbarity I prefer.

How about two left hooks to the body combined with a right uppercut. Trust me, I trained for years and still find that tough as hell to do. It's amazing to see true great boxers in person, and I know a few, throw combos, bob-and-weave, counter-punch or even throw jabs with power.

It doesn't matter, I just want you to see the Mayweather-de la Hoya fight in May. It's the biggest purse in boxing's history and just about the most intriguing fight to come around this century.
