The Secret to The Secret

Here is an interesting article for about the movie The Secret. I think that the author has the right idea and that a lot of people are getting way too caught up in the possibility of riches and missing the point.

The authors website (if you want it) is: www.williambloom.com

IS THE LAW OF ATTRACTION BLACK OR WHITE MAGIC?July 2007 Cygnus Magazine Thirty years ago, I watched a group of men in suitsstanding in a circle and chanting on top ofGlastonbury Tor, one of Earth’s great sacred sites.Afterwards I asked what they were doing and onereplied that they were chanting for business andfinancial success. I was shocked. I shouldn’t havebeen so naïve. The following year I decided to leave my career andtake spiritual retreat. I lived for two years insouthern Morocco, in the High Atlas Mountains thirtymiles south of Marrakech. Towards the centre of thiswalled ancient city there is a square of shops andstalls dedicated purely to magical paraphernalia andsorcery - bats wings, toads eyes, spiders webs andstuff that would shock you if I named them. One day Iwas shopping for some incense and a stallholder askedme the most basic of questions: ‘Is it for God or forthe Devil?’ For him the question was asstraightforward as a wine merchant asking whether youwanted red or white wine. He was not asking a moralquestion. He simply needed to know what frequency theincense should vibrate. This is the most fundamentaland practical of questions when working with energiesor, in another language, magic.

Like attracts like All magic and sorcery is based on the principle thatsimilar vibrations are attracted to each other. Thisis the fundamental Law of Attraction or what wasidentified as ‘sympathetic magic’, a phrase used bythe Victorian anthropologist J.G. Frazer in his famousbook The Golden Bough. So, for example, if you have a negative attitude andradiate negative energy, you will put yourself inresonance with other people’s negative energy andattract it to you. Equally if you vibrate withpositive energy, you will be harmonically resonantwith positive energy and it too will be magneticallyconnected and attracted to you.

Let me give two more examples. If someone wants anattractive and intelligent partner, then that personneeds to be attractive and intelligent in the firstplace, so as to be magnetically similar. Someonevibrating with neediness will only attract someoneelse with the same vibe.

The second example is fromtalismanic magic. If you want to make a talisman tohelp you be more courageous, then you attractcourageous energy through appropriate objects thatresonate with courage – such as images of Mars andheroism, the metal iron, the colour red and so on.Using these objects as tuning sticks or receptors, youthen attract in the frequency of courage. All of this is sympathetic magic following the law ofattraction. It has been taught, usually in secret, forthousands of years.

There are also add-ons andtechniques which cam amplify its power. When I firstbegan to study this field of energy work in my earlytwenties, my teachers reminded me to make a cleardecision. Was I engaged in white or black magic? TheHigh Art or the Low Art? Selfish or generous? Love orGreed? God or the Devil? Energy work and the law of attraction can be used tofeather your personal nest of materialism or it can beused as a spiritual path. As a spiritual strategy, the law of attraction is usedfor positive good, for example, in healing, incommuning with the natural world and in opening up tothe benevolent flow of the universe. This is truepersonal development. Material wealth and financial success do not bringpersonal fulfillment. (Let me be clear though. I like money and I want everyone on this planet to beclothed, fed, educated, safe, comfortable and happy.)I have known many rich people, but I have never seenmoney reaching deep into their emotional healing.

Manypeople who have lots of money behave like selfish, anxious criminals. I do not recall any great spiritualteachers suggesting material wealth as a path toenlightenment and love. Buddha renounced the materialworld and was explicit about desire being the sourceof human suffering. Christ suggested that ‘the love ofmoney is the source of all evil’ and that ‘it iseasier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needlethan for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.’ True Abundance So what is real prosperity and abundance? It is surelythe experience of being connected to the profoundrichness of cosmic existence – infinite creativity andabundance. How does all the gold on earth compare tothe fire of the Sun or the power that produced ourgalaxy? To fully experience spirit, the Tao, God –whatever you call it – is this wonderful sensation andawareness of being connected with and part of theoceanic flow of a never-ending creative cosmic event.

Prosperity is not to do with material riches. It is acosmic spiritual experience. Unfortunately, some people who teach about the laws ofattraction and cosmic order have either forgotten orignore the cosmic dimension. Sometimes they even showoff about their material success and have the cheek to claim they are being spiritual or are sharing a greatsecret.

Worse than that, to promise material success as asolution to life’s problems is morally wrong andpsychologically stupid. It is a false promise. Howdoes it support anyone’s true soul calling? It mayconfuse people who are already disorientated by theharmful glamour of social glitter. It is black magic. Money is not a substitute for love and healing. Moreover this kind of materialist approach is ignorantabout how sympathetic magic actually works withspiritual development.

For example, financial successmight be positively harmful for some people’s growth –their personal lesson may be to find joy in poverty. In a case like this, the law of attraction whenapplied to money is bound to fail. But, as we all know, the real failure here is fallingfor the spell of materialism. And the real success isin expanded consciousness and increased love.

I'm currently reading a book called "Why People Believe Weird Things" by a guy named Shermer (can't remember his first name) who is the founder of Sceptic magazine and he spends a chunk of one of his chpaters on Cayce.

Beyond that, I just can't believe anything for which there is absolutely no empirical evidence whatsoever.

Thanks I'll have to go check that out. I would really like to believe in him though. It does seem there is lots of proof on his side. I guess there is still Quantum Physics if your guy shatters my world, which is pretty similar to alot of what Cayce has to say. Whats your take on Quantum Physics? Meaning...people want to believe in stuff because people want meaning. Well hope too. Well purpose too.

My take on it is that it's the most accurate or second-most accurate scientific theory out there, using the only standard that matters in science: the number (and accuracy) of quantitative predictions of experimental results that it makes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Introduction_to_quantum_mechanics

What, exactly, has Cayce said that's remotely similar to what QM says? (Note that QM is also the most mis-characterized scientific theory out there. For example, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle has a precise mathematical derivation, meaning, and application, but often get mis-interpreted to mean "the observer always affects the observed", which is a gross and inaccurate over-simplification. This kind of mis-characterization is also what leads to social darwinism and those who assign moral or social interpretations to Einstein's theories of relativity.)

Aloha,

Brad

I love you too J !!!

You did have to go and bring up Bingo though eh? That is a problem lol.

I do think that Edgar Cayce made a huge imprint on the way people looked at many different aspects of life. Many of his predictions didn't come to past, but he never said they would. Edgar Cayce always kept to his belief that the future could be changed and that his readings were literally following a line from that moment straight to the future. but we do change and therefore so does the readings outcome.

I am more into his ability to help people in medical need and I am impressed by the accuracy of his medically treatment some of which we are just understanding now.

But I am a little jaded having read so much of his work.
