Still, I can overlook all the future debates and controversy if Pete and company make a good album with killer Townshend chops.

I agree - it's a little tasteless to still call yourselves The Who when half of the band is dead. I'm sure that they could released the new album under the name "Townsend/Daltrey" (or some combination thereof) without affecting sales... [Frown]

I love kimchi! Especially kimchi mandoo... mmmm... maybe I'll go make some right now...

  3. Greetings, Earthlings!

I hope everyone has had a great holiday season. And now, for a new discussion, I ask you... (drumroll)...

Despite a certain amount of grumbling from some members, the LivePhish downloads are a reality - so, what *archival* shows would you like to see made available for downloading? Let's see what kind of wish list we generate here. I know that my first suggestion would be...

    12.29.94 (David Bowie...mmmmmmmm!) [big Grin][big Grin]

    Raving and drooling,

I don't deny that everyone has the right to an opinion, it's just that opinions need to have a basis of some sort, and I was wondering what it was that lead you to form this opinion?

Anyway, Merry Christmas/ Channukah/ Kwaanza to all!

Is the vodka still cheaper than coke at the 7-11's?

I hope you have a large collection of CD's to tide you over for your stay!

Vodka is cheap, but soju is cheaper still!

I haven't seen any woof-woof on a menu yet, but at least now I know where to look. The only bulgogi I've had yet has been beef... I think. Itaewon is like an insane asylum, so I fit right in. I've been on a CD-buying spree lately - the music store in COEX has pretty good selection, and I've got a discount card too. One of my goals while here is to learn how to use Shorten, so I can download cool stuff too!

Anti-American sentiment is running pretty high right now over here - or, at least anti-American miltary sentiment. Thank Jebus I'll never be mistaken for a GI... [smile][big Grin][smile]

  6. Hey -

I'm watching TV the other night - American Forces Network (AFN) (gimme a break, I only get 3.5 stations that broadcast in English!!). Instead of regular commercials, AFN gives "helpful" commercials that are supposed to make life in the armed forces easier. Examples include "Don't tip the vending machine", "What to do if you think someone in your unit is engaged in espionage (and how to tell the warning signs)", "Why alcohol abuse is bad", "What to do if you are captured by the enemy", "It is an offence under military law to criticize the president", and my personal favourite: "How to tell if someone around you is depressed and thinking about suicide" (one of the tips includes hearing them say things like "I just want to kill myself!" and "I wish that I was dead!".)

Anyway, a new "commercial" comes on, and the background music was the intro to PYITE - the first thirty seconds or so! I just about fell off of my bed; I mean, I've heard of Phish songs showing up in some unlikely places, put on the Armed Forces Network?!? Very strange. [big Grin][big Grin]

    Brian.

PS - even stranger, the next day I saw *another* new advertisement - this one had MMW's "Uninvisible" as the background music. There must be a hippie working at AFN... too bad there aren't some more in the armed forces - maybe they could keep Georgie out of Iraq! [Razz]

I agree - I also have issues with some of the choices, I just meant that no one really complained about the *idea* of releasing live shows. And I don't want to debate which those are either - obviously subjectivity rules in cases like this! [smile]

Ummm.... what does this mean, Steve? Where *should* they have announced their comeback? On one hand, you say that you don't want them to play stadium shows (and I agree 100% with you there), but on the other hand, you complain that "only" 20,000 people can show up.

And what's with the Trey comment? Did he say that somewhere, or are you just guessing at this? Is there any basis or justification for this? I think that almost any musician would be pleased by the fact that they have so many fans who want to go to their show, but I don't think that Trey was sitting around plotting a strategy to make it the hardest ticket to get for NYE.

I think that the downloads are a great idea. As the previous post stated, no one complained about the LivePhish series, and if you substitute the work you must do to download/burn for the price you pay for shipping and packaging, it works out the same - or better! As I (and others) have stated already, no one is forcing anyone to buy any of their products...

I really don't see what all of the fuss is about. If you don't want to buy the downloads... DON"T BUY THEM!! No one is twisting anyone's arm. Audience taping is still permitted, so what's the gripe? Before, everyone was complaining that Phish was on hiatus... now, we're complaining that they are back!!!

Last time I checked, an artist was still allowed to make a profit off of his/her music. Let's also not forget that Phish donate a significant amount of money to charitable works too, although I haven't seen a specific designation as such for this project.

  10. Hey all!

I'm on a *completely* different TV schedule over here, and Saturday Night Live is not broadcast "Live" here - if it was, it would be on at 1:30 Sunday afternoon! This past Saturday night, the SNL episode was hosted by Robert DeNiro. Does anyone know if this was the episode preceding the Phish appearance? I'm assuming that it's always one week off, which means that I can see Phish this coming Saturday, but we all know what happens when you "assume"... [Wink]

Nope, unless you want to teach in the private school system. By law (no pun intended), pretty much everyone has to have a B.Ed to teach in the public system. The private system has the benefit of teaching fewer classes per day and not dealing with the government, but the downside is that you make a lot less money.

Of course, if you actually want to make money, I'd probably recommend using your law degree to enter the legal profession itself.

    [Wink]

Yeah, it's funny to think that I got to see some of those bands while they were still around. That same summer I also saw New Order with PiL and the Sugar Cubes! Johnny Rotten and Bjork all in one day!

Also saw the first Lollapalooza tour - the one that had Jane's Addiction, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Butthole Surfers, Rollins Band, and Body Count(!).

I know this is supposed to be about *embarrassing* shows though, not cool ones, so I had better admit to seeing Goddo one time... and Peter Frampton as well! Frampton was at Kingswood (Wonderland) - we bought our tickets 1/2 hour before the show and still scored eighth row centre-stage. There were fewer than 200 people in the whole place. I almost felt embarassed for the guy... [Razz]

My favourite years are the "just Billy" years. Having only one drummer made the sound a little more fluid, and it was probably easier to change rhythms and tempos. I think that something about the sound of the band changed after Mickey came back in 1975 (other than the fact that there was another member, of course!) . I prefer the "double-drummer" sounds of the earlier years much more than the later years. Of course, the drums/space segment is always good, too...

Video Hits... sure! I used to think Samantha Taylor was pretty hot. Remember the debate over whether or not she was one of the background dancers in Wham!'s Wake Me Up (Before You Go-Go) video, where they all wore "Choose Life" t-shirts? She wasn't actually in the video, of course, bu that one girl sure did look like her...

And of course, Brad Roberts on Toronto Rocks! And let's not forget Terry David Mulligan on Good Rockin' Tonite (was that what it was called?), and Friday Nite Videos on WGRZ out of Buffalo - came on at 12:30 at night, I remember seeing clips from Ziggy Stardust: The Movie.

First concert? The Cure, summer of 1990, with Love & Rockets and The Pixies opening. Actually, I'm not ashamed of this one at all - it was a fantastic show...

You are right - they are. *However*, there is an interesting side-note here (the same issue came up in a high school where I was teaching once): the right to freedom of expression does not always apply to high school students. Since the right to an education applies to *all* of the students in the building, if someone's manner of freely expressing themselves prevents others from achieving their right to an education (the general brou-ha-ha created by wearing the shirt), the right of the many generally supersedes the right of the individual. At least, that's how it plays out in Canada, anyway, and (despite my pro-free speech views) I can understand that view.

Nope. I'm pretty sure that as long as it's not a criminal offence, it won't end up in the database - or it shouldn't, anyway. I'm sure that they don't have your parking fines in the computer; that's what these new citations amount to (although the border patrol wouldn't keep you out of the US for unpaid parking fines - I do recognize the difference!).

In the end, I'm not sure how this makes the case any different - regardless of the penalty, if the record is in the computer, you're still screwed. The real worry is that police will start handing out citations all of the time. Before, they couldn't be bothered with hassling people over a joint or two, and let them go; now, they may be even *more* likely to give you a citation, since you are unlikely to fight it, not to mention that it's a money making policy...

The Cell Phone of Doom was large and hummed in a menacing tone, hooked up as it was to it's large, plastic charger. Bobby, quaking with fear, considered his options. Should he turn it on and dial his friend, Timmy, or back away slowly? After all, where was the rest of his family? After careful deliberation, Bobby decided to...
