  1. This is the NEW shit, Alright!?!?! http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=FarwBWm-ayM http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=kG2BEWSL0i0 PJC presents... MV & EE with THE GOLDEN ROAD http://www.myspace.com/mveebummerroad http://www.ecstaticpeace.com/mvee MV & EE is a group of musicians focused around Matt Valentine, sometimes referred to as MV, and his partner Erika Elder. Matt Valentine was in the neo-psychedelic group, The Tower Recordings. While the duo recorded under many different names, including MV&EE Medicine Show and The Bummer Road, most of the records center around both artists and feature a rotating cast of additional musicians. Their style is self-described as "lunar ragas", with many of the lyrics dealing with celestial imagery. They combine Indian raga style composition (with increasing authenticity as they become more accomplished with time) with Appalachian folk and post-psychedelic electrical experimentalism. They use Western and Eastern acoustic instruments amplified and augmented with effects such as reverb, delay, and flange. Their compositions occasionally feature vocals, which are off-kilter and rambling, while seeming drugged. Wikipedia MV: Acoustic and Electric Guitars, Harmonica, Bantar (modified banjo>sitar), Swarsangam, Bass, Octave Divider Bass, Mellotron, Vox EE: Cocola Firebird, Lap Steel, Bowed Dulcimer, Mandolin, Vox Plus the Golden Road. With PROOF OF GHOSTS http://www.myspace.com/proofofghosts http://www.weewerk.com/ GOAT FOOTED & ANNIE SHAW With a core trio consisting of Steve Shoe (The Electric Shoes), Mike Duffield (The Postage Stamps), and Mike Hawko (Sinking Ships), Proof Of Ghosts has an extended family that includes; Jason Baird (Do Make Say Think, Feist), Kelly Sue O'Connor (Henri Fabrige and the Adorables), Justin Small (Do Make Say Think, Lullaby Arkestra) and Trevor Coleman (The Boat), amongst others. The release of Proof Of Ghosts’ self titled debut record is a momentous occasion. Proof Of Ghosts features 15 songs of pure pleasure and aural ecstasy, with heartfelt lyrics and guitar rupted waves of emotion. This is folk rock that mesmerizes. Proof of Ghosts has shared the stage with touring acts White Whale and VCR, locals Rock Plaza Central, The Diabaleros, The Cansecos and Timber Timbre and joined Do Make Say Think on tour in Washington DC. Would sound great on a mix tape with: Band Of Horses, Dinosaur Jr, East River Pipe, Chad Van Gaalen, Miracle Fortress, Great Lake Swimmers, Oceano De Cruz, Buffalo Tom www.weewerk.com MORE TBA... Wednesday, June 25th 9pm $10, All ages/Licensed. @ Pepper Jack's 38 King William St. Hamilton www.pepperjackcafe.com (905)525-6666
  2. People People People!!! This show is the "cats ass" I tell you.
  3. Tonight at 10pm Pepper Jack's, $5 Sorry for the huge amount of text. www.pepperjackcafe.com www.re-mains.com www.myspace.com/countryrockandroll www.raebilling.com www.myspace.com/raebilling By Rob Slack The Re-Mains hate the fucking Eagles. Fingernails on a chalkboard, a fork being dragged across a plate, hate. There’s a moment in The Big Lebowski when The Dude gets thrown out of a cab for saying he hates the fucking eagles, and it’s my favourite scene in all of filmdom. With their vapid, dead fish-eye Southern Californian stares and their ability to make James Taylor sound like The Minutemen by comparison, the fucking Eagles represent that makes me crazy and crazy and angst-ridden about modern mainstream country. The crap that country radio has been pumping out for the last thirty years plus has been nothing more than one long extended version of “Hotel Californiaâ€. As Mojo Nixon once said, “Don Henley is the anti-Elvis.†Now, picture a world where the fucking eagles never found each other, never made music for elevators and grocery stores, never defamed country rock by taking both the country and the rock out of music. Nice isn’t it. The Re-Mains are from that alternate world. It’s a world where Dead Flowers by The Rolling Stones was a mainstream hit, where Townes Van Zandt is a household name, where Uncle Tupelo never split but Son Volt and Wilco still play and record. An alternate universe where every time you turn on the radio you can hear Kris Kristofferson and Corb Lund and John Prine and The Poor Choices and Elliott Brood and Cuff The Duke and Blackie & The Rodeo Kings. Willie P. Bennett is given a state funeral and The Perpetrator are given The Order of Canada. I will call that world Austin World and I will live their very happily, thank you very much. The Re-Mains are the bastard children of Keith Richards and Wanda Jackson, of Jeff Tweedy and Bob Dylan. The are the war orphans left behind by Nick Cave’s murder ballads, by Johnny Cash’s evil seed. They are Willie Nelson’s outlaw country taken home and given a cold bath and a warm beer. They are the promise fulfilled by the union of Jack White and Loretta Lynn. And they are Australian. Of course they’re from Australia. A country populated by folk who left Africa 50,000 years ago and hiked halfway around the world in only a couple of generations. A country colonized by criminals and outlaws. A country whose extremes make our extremes look like suburban fantasies provided by Sears. If kick-you-in-the-ass country rock is going to be perfected anywhere, it should be in the land of Vegemite and the southern cross. Rolling Stone Magazine, which gave The Re-Mains’ Love Last Stand four stars, describes them as “Northern NSW country rock & roll hellraisers… combining a rootsy twang with inner-city smarts and genuine affection for rollicking, tumbling hillbilly sounds.†Someone else said “Think the Eels after a ten day binge.†I say the Re-Mains will kick you in the ass and leave you wanting more. Six reasons to line up to see The Re-Mains: 1. Ballad of a Wrong ‘un – an amazing murder song, violent and mean. With the great line “He always wanted to be a star football player / But the poor guy had a build like Leo Sayer…†2. The Dirt Farmer’s Gavotte. It’s just brilliant. Fred Eaglesmith should write a song this good 3. Othello’s P76. “If everybody sang like Pavarotti then we’d all sound just the same / But everybody does their best, beats their chest, and tries and tries again…†Yeah. 4. Day in The Sun. ‘Cause it is a piece of heaven. 5. They once killed a man. Really. They played for some shearers in the Australian bush who had been on a three day speed and booze powered bender. When The Re-Mains finished their set, the crowd wanted more. And so they kicked into †A whole lot Of Rosie†and one of the shearers dropped dead of a heart attack. He was in his mid-twenties. 6. “Imagine a 70’s Holden which has been fanged, hooned, thrashed and cruised from one end of the country to the other, mainly on bad roads, never breaking down but continually having parts replaced as the long distances take their toll.†ABC Radio had that to say about The Re-Mains and I don’t really know what some of the words means (it’s like the Australians speak in code to keep the rest of the world guessing) but I think a Holden is a car. And so it goes. I hate the fucking Eagles. I love The Re-Mains www.raebilling.com www.myspace.com/raebilling By Kerry Doole We should be grateful that Rae Billing got the seven-year itch. It has been that long between albums for the now Hamilton, ON-based songstress, a major talent long seriously undervalued. She first made a mark leading ’90s Toronto country rockers Crybaby, and Blue Black Night shows no decline in her formidable skills. Billing’s voice is both strong and oft shiver-inducing, while her penchant for writing emotionally eloquent and haunting material is nicely showcased here. In fact, the only non-original, a cover of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus,†is the weakest cut. You can also judge this artist by the company she keeps: producer Peter Moore (Cowboy Junkies), legendary Band keyboardist Garth Hudson and a core band featuring Steve Koch (Handsome Ned, the Demics), bassist Derrick Brady (Hawksley Workman), former Blue Rodeo drummer Cleave Anderson and keyboardist Matt Horner. The interaction of Koch’s silvery guitar lines and Horner’s B3 playing frames the vocals very effectively on tunes like “No Closer†and “Waiting To Fall,†while male backing vocals also add depth. Superb stuff. (Hug/OPM)
  4. It is completely insane that they are getting away with the Iraq war. INSANE! But not surprising. I'm a big fan of www.democracynow.org
  5. All three acts are solid. Shurelock Groove had a vibe player which makes for a full sound. Think 70's movie soundtrack. Porn or action.

Founded by virtuoso sitarist Neeraj Prem, the ensemble is a potent blend of highly accomplished musicians from a myriad of cultural backgrounds. What started as a quest to render the Indian Raags and Taalas in complex and simple ways, has developed into a musical language of union between cultures. Initially, the group was a collection of musicians focusing on the heart of Indian heritage, but as their music grew, so too did the people who wanted to play with them. Karthik Ramalingam plays the Indian bamboo flute with Ragaffaire. He was trained by Pt. Janardhan, a disciple of Pt. Ravi Shankar. He says of the group's leader Neeraj Prem, "He is extremely open-minded, fearless, and treats all fellow musicians with equal respect." It is this openness and fearlessness that has invited new sounds to enter the sphere of Ragaffaire and carry it to where it is today. Now the ensemble includes musicians of other strongly rooted backgrounds such as Africa, Afghanistan, Iran, along with integrating styles like jazz and hip hop. As Ragaffaire travels through North America and abroad sharing their music, they have been attracting the attention of other high profile musicians who want to be part of their fusing musical conversations that are erupting in dynamic mystical experiences of musical alchemy. It is 'World Jazz Fusion' at its best, as each performance by Ragaffaire stirs up a musical conversation between the hearts of multiple backgrounds. It is a journey into the mythology of all our cultural roots, calling us to experience the spiritual union of where we came from. The mystical Indian sounds blend with the African beats, accompanied by jazz compositions and hip hop rhythmic treats. All geographic barriers are dissolved, and a new sense of Indian music is felt, as it no longer seems to come from a distant and far away land Instead it is right where you are, intertwining with your roots, and melting the barriers to your heart.
  8. This will be a funky night of Jazz and Experimental music, ~Wednesday, June 11th~ SHURELOCK GROOVE JOHN FARAH(B3 Organ, DnB) http://www.johnfarah.com http://www.myspace.com/jkfarah http://www.cbc.ca/radio2/singleConcert.html?20071212farah TIM TURVEY ENSEMBLE http://www.turvey.ca. $8, 10pm www.pepperjackcafe.com 38 King William St. Hamilton (905)525-6666 John Farah John Kameel Farah is a Toronto composer, pianist, electronic musician and visual artist, fusing the music worlds of renaissance and baroque counterpoint, improvisation, Middle-Eastern texture, ambient minimalism, techno and electro-acoustics, to synthesize an entirely original sound. A virtuosic keyboardist simultaneously using piano, synthesizer sound sculpture, computer sequencing, and at times even harpsichord and organ, his creative efforts are fueled by exchanges of energies on a galactic and microscopic scale. In an effort to see the larger picture, his music draws upon an interest in history, mythology, painting and psychology to help deepen his understanding of life and the human condition. Classically trained in composition and piano performance at the University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory, John received the Glenn Gould Composition Award twice during his studies. The influences of the classical and modern composers whose works he performed can be felt in his music, mixing with forays into free improvisation, minimalism, jazz, electro-acoustics, eastern scales, ambient and genres of electronic dance music such as drum & bass, IDM. In 1999, after meeting minimalist composer/pianist Terry Riley in NYC, he had private lessons at his home in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California and on two occasions he studied Middle-Eastern classical music at the Arabic Music Retreat in Hartford. In 1998 he performed the complete solo piano works of Arnold Schoenberg in Toronto. He has been interviewed and broadcast by the CBC’s radio programs The Signal, Brave New Waves, Two New Hours and Metro Morning. Also a prolific visual artist, his drawings have been presented at solo and group exhibitions, recently being the Visual-Artist-In-Residence at the Trane Studio jazz club in Toronto. Farah performs regularly in Toronto, and has also given concerts in Paris, Boston, Vancouver, Montreal, Vermont, the Middle-East and Mexico, this year giving a concert atop the Aztec Great Pyramid of Cholula with galactic visuals created by astronomer John Dubinski. In 1999 and 2002 he visited the Edward Said National Conservatory in the West Bank, giving performances and masterclasses in Ramallah, East Jerusalem Toronto’s NOW Magazine named his as Best Pianist 2006.

Joel Plaskett returns to the producer’s chair on Little Jabs, which packs a wallop with eleven captivating tracks that blur the line between folk rock and powerful pop. The video for their seasonal anthem, “Stuck for the Summer,†is currently in rotation on MuchMusic and the band is hitting the Trans-Canada to bring their unparalleled pop sensibilities to the masses. Unabashedly catchy and sincere, Two Hours Traffic is deservedly at the fore of the Canadian Maritime pop revival and Little Jabs will only solidify that position. Two Hours Traffic began in 2003 when former kindergarten colleagues Liam Corcoran and Alec O’Hanley recruited fellow University of PEI chemistry students Andrew MacDonald and Derek Ellis. After the better part of a year, the group released an EP entitled The April Storm (Independent). This record caught the ear of acclaimed Halifax guitar hero Joel Plaskett, who immediately offered to produce the group’s first full-length album. When not breaking Erlenmeyer flasks, the group managed to pen and record an anthemic eponymous full length album. Recorded while the band was still in their teens, their second album Two Hours Traffic (Independent) recalls the eccentricity of The Cars and the immediacy of Big Star. People took to the songs without hesitation: Limelight fueled some hottub drama on The OC, Better Sorry Than Safe edged out indie-rock mainstays Broken Social Scene and The Constantines on CBC Radio 3's 2005 year-end list, and the album was nominated for Best Rock Recording at the 2006 East Coast Music Awards. While their debut full length album was a magnet for critical accolades, their peers began to take notice as well; Two Hours Traffic toured Canada extensively with the likes of Wintersleep, The Joel Plaskett Emergency and The Golden Dogs. The 2006 release of their second EP, Isolator (Independent), signified the band’s arrival as accomplished songwriters. More critical acclaim followed and the disc received a 2007 ECMA nomination for Best Alternative Album. Two Hours Traffic has gladly left behind the ivory towers of higher education for less dignified pursuits.
