  1. PJC presents Thrill Jockey recording artists' the EXPLODING STAR ORCHESTRA ROB MAZUREK - cornet & electronics NICOLE MITCHELL - flutes MATT BAUDER - bass clarinet & tenor saxophone JASON ADASIEWICZ - vibraphone JASON AJEMIAN - acoustic bass MIKE REED - drums & percussion Additional Bio info about the group can be obtained here: http://www.thrilljockey.com/assets/library/10140/Exploding%20Star%20Orchestra.pdf Bio info on Rob can be obtained here: http://www.robmazurek.com/bio/ with special guest KEROSENE DAYDREAM http://www.myspace.com/kerosenedaydream New York Times Review By NATE CHINEN Published: January 21, 2007 Exploding Star Orchestra The cornetist Rob Mazurek originally convened his Exploding Star Orchestra for a commissioned concert a year and a half ago at Millennium Park in Chicago. "We Are All From Somewhere Else" (Thrill Jockey), the group's phantasmagorical first album, was recorded in a studio some time later with many of the same musicians. Mr. Mazurek, a Chicago native who now lives in Brazil, divides the album neatly into two suites, each with its own whimsically oblique story line. (Sting rays, phoenixes and the violent energies of the universe are involved.) Writing for 14 pieces, he employs strategies somehow evocative of both Lalo Schifrin and Andrew Hill. Swirling action is his strong suit, even when the working conceit is a group improvisation against the recorded hum of electric eels. The flutist Nicole Mitchell and the guitarist Jeff Parker make the strongest individual impressions, along with Mr. Mazurek, who augments his cornet with electronics. But the orchestra itself demands a wide-angle focus. At times its multilayered sonic atmosphere suggests an expanded edition of the instrumental rock group Tortoise, with which it shares several members, including Mr. Parker. As engineered by John McEntire, another Tortoise transplant, this album comes across as a work of ambition, imagination and panache. 2. This show will rule people! I put Organ and Drums in the topic headline because they are very reminiscent of the Duo.
  3. PJC presents Daptone family members The BUDOS BAND (Staten Island) with special guests: ULTRA MAGNUS (Toronto) Saturday, Sept. 15th 2007 @The Pepper Jack Cafe Adv Tix $12. 19+, Doors open at 9pm @ PEPPER JACK'S 38 King William St. Hamilton http://www.pepperjackcafe.com (905)525-6666 http://www.myspace.com/budosband http://www.daptonerecords.com/pages/dap011thebudosLP-CD.html http://www.myspace.com/umagnus BUDOS BAND Line-up... BRIAN PROFILIO, Drums DANIEL FODER, Bass Guitar THOMAS BRENNECK, Electric Guitar MIKE DELLER, Organ JARED TANKEL, Baritone Saxophone DAVE GUY, Trumpet DAME RODRIGUEZ, Cowbell/Clave/Tambourine VINCENT BALESTRINO, Shekere ROB LOMBARDO, Bongo, Congas JOHN CARBONELLA JR., Congas/Drums THE BUDOS BAND is the quintessence of Staten Island Soul. Their exciting new afro-influenced take on instrumental music has been captivating listeners at gigs across the Tri-State area. Eleven pieces in all, their group consists of drums, bass, guitar, electric organ, two trumpets, baritone saxophone, and a percussion section employing bongos, congas, tambourine, guiro, clave, shekere and cowbell. Their music has been described as "compelling", "unbridled", "psychedelic", "innovative", and above all "soulful." With it's twenty-two legs, three horns, and hallucinogenic venom, The Budos Band, the un-heralded emperors of Instrumental Staten Island Afro-Soul, continue to rule. The band commands their listeners to follow them on their second journey into the depths of their poisonous vision. While their debut album was itself heralded as a groundbreaking exploration of funk, afro-beat and soul music, few could predict that their second effort would not only match but surpass the realm of mind-expansion embodied on their first sessions. Through ten exciting new instrumentals recorded live at Daptone's House of Soul in Bushwick, Brookyln, The Budos Band pours themes at once resonant and ethereal over Herculean rhythms.

  9. PJC presents SAFFRON SECT With guests: Wyrd Vision Tradition FRIDAY, AUGUST 10TH 10PM, $6 @PEPPER JACK'S 38 King William St. Hamilton, (905)525-6666 http://www.pepperjackcafe.com Just in time, after the James St. North art crawl. FRIDAY, AUGUST, 10TH, 10pm, $6. http://www.pepperjackcafe.com Check them out!!! SAFFRON SECT: http://www.saffronsect.ca The unique vision of Gaven Dianda, The Saffron Sect is born of overgrown gardens and shaded secret places. Songs of seas, smoke, and stone alike, these recordings offer glimpses of worlds that might have been, or should be. Hazy and mysteriously rollicking rhythms and an array of familiar & archaic intruments coupled with Gaven's lilting voice and lyric betray his weird imagination, painted here in the palettes of the psychedelic. Devoid of the self-awareness strangling many bands, The Saffron Sect conjure up a playful world in which to deliberate life's loves lost and won... Gaven Dianda - vocals, guitar, krummhorn, sitar, recorder Katie Iarocci- flute, vocals, glockenschpiel, autoharp, dulcimer Matt McLaren - upright and electric bass, jug, clarinet Jay Anderson - drums, tabla, finger cymbals WYRD VISIONS: http://www.myspace.com/wyrdvisions Wyrd Visions is the realized dream of a blissful Toronto dude named Colin Bergh. In a live setting, Bergh brings his minimal psych-folk-cum-black-metal excursions into the blackest of lights with the help of a couple of friends. Matt Smith (a.k.a. N!fty, ex-Les Mouches) and Paul Mortimer (also of Mortimercy and Jon-Rae & the River) -- both of whom join Bergh in the costume-loving experimental troupe Awesome -- back up Bergh's lithe voice and scaly guitar riffs with a little percussion and six-string accompaniment. However, on his debut for Bluefog/Sonic Unyon, Half-Eaten Guitar, the vision is nearly all Bergh: repetitive riffs, slow builds that never quite climax and meditative, trance-inducing vocals, all of which effectively help stir the invisible spirits and vibes surrounding you to brave new worlds of being. ~Eye Weekly, JN 15, '06~ TRADITION http://www.myspace.com/tradition Tradition is James Klassen, who has been playing in Toronto for a while now. A couple of years ago, Tradition was far more aggressive and angular, featuring Klassen on guitar and, usually, only a drummer backing him; this arrangement worked well as Klassen had more than enough fire in him to carry the show on his own. The new Tradition seems to have evolved (inasmuch as "evolved" means "less spastic") but it doesn't make his sound any less effective on a visceral level. Instead of force, however, Tradition's new technique is insidiousness: his (mostly bass) drumbeats are sparse, heavy, and slightly off-time, while his guitar lines are simple, catchy and repetitive - they would sound upbeat taken out of context. While the songs seem benign at first, they snowball into dark, hypnotic drones that are made eerier by Klassen's abstruse lyrics and his slightly slurred singing. Droning is a popular pastime but not everyone who does it is aware that you need something to drone on in the first place; Klassen's riffs are uncomplicated but the shifting temps and begulling melodies keep the songs tense and engaging. The only real failure here - a 19 minute one, unfortunately - is the closing track, which consists of one chord played over and over. This seems like laziness on Klassen's part, as he is more than capable of writing real songs, and therefore has no excuse to cop out. (Then again, people listen to far less accessible music than this, so dig in!) Style-wise, Tradition's Blocks debut rests somewhere between the Godz and Young God Records. Heavy credentials but Klassen certainly has something. ~Exclaim 03/05/07 Alex Molotkow~
  10. 2nd Tube you still got those shows? We used to play some marimba included wassabi shows on our radio show years ago.
  11. Myself of course. Tonight is going to be awesome. Circuit Breaker and Alun Piggins will be dope as well.
  12. OMG somebody actually listened! I just started doing a radio show in that time slot 2 weeks ago I usualy just play whatever... then 1 hour before the show today, I remebered it was Jerry's B-day tomorrow and booked home to get all I had. Bama, I don't have that Legion of Mary but could you hook me up sometime? I tried to not go too obscure so the regular 9-5 ers who might be listening might be intrigued and have a new appreciation for JG's music. Soo many people have heard of the grateful dead and Jerry garcia but really have no clue what the music sounds like or that they may actaully like it if they gave it a listen and did not just assume it was either Metal or crazy psychedelia all the time. Glad you approved baj, sunshine wil, and hopefully ada.
  13. In honour of Jerry's B-Day tomorrow, I will be playing a long set of Jerry Garcia/Dead fav's on CFMU McMaster radio today. 1-2:30pm. http://cfmu.mcmaster.ca/ For requests call in 905 928-9888. I'm a bit ill prepared so I may not have what you want but I should have most the bases and covered.
  14. PJC presents THE JIMMY SWIFT BAND with guests CIRCUIT BREAKER http://www.myspace.com/circuitbreak ALUN PIGGINS http://www.alunpiggins.com/ THURSDAY, AUGUST 2ND 10pm, $10 http://www.thejimmyswiftband.com http://www.myspace.com/tjsb @ Pepper Jack's 38 King William St. Hamilton (905)525-6666 http://www.pepperjackcafe.com
  15. They also have a new guitarist now. Played PJC last night and killed. Highly recommendable!!!
  16. I think this is a seriously good line-up. Show-Whore is definitely trying his best and succeeding in bringing some new fresh music into this fest. Woodhands, Ultra Mag and USMW are fucking awesome to say the least. Circuit Breaker are sure to blow some minds as well. They are live drum and bass(with keyboard player) but they actually pull off a fresh sound and not that cliche'd dnb that got old real fast. Plus the good ol fatties, mark wilson, friends of hef and DD??? On top of how much fun I see these bands as being I have to say I can't see one band that is not a good bunch of decent people as well. Good vibes are sure to be had. Just because you don't know who the band is, doesn't mean they are going to suck.
  17. PJC presents Ottawa's SOULJAZZ ORCHESTRA With guests Steve Murphy Band This Saturday, July 28th. $10, 10pm http://www.souljazzorchestra.com/ @ Pepper Jack's 38 King William St. Hamilton, ON www.pepperjackcafe.com (905)525-6666 Since 2002, the Ottawa-based band has been keeping the classic sounds of raw, gritty groove alive and well in Canada. Their style combines jazz, funk, African and Latin music with messages touching on politics and spirituality. The blaring horns, retro keyboards and polyrhythmic beats show the influence of James Brown, Herbie Hancock, Fela Kuti and Tito Puente, but the sound remains refreshingly original. Their stylistic variety is in part due to the diverse musical backgrounds of the band’s individual members : jazz, funk, blues, reggae, classical, and traditional Cuban, Brazilian and West African percussion. The Souljazz Orchestra has had the chance to collaborate with notable artists such as Beautiful Nubia and Mighty Popo, and has opened up for Etta James, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, John Lee Hooker Jr., The Sadies, Fred Eaglesmith, and more. The band has appeared at the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Ottawa Jazz Festival, the Ottawa Blues Festival, and the Ottawa Tulip Festival. The Souljazz Orchestra released their second album, Freedom No Go Die, in September of 2006. This high-energy release focuses mainly on afrobeat music, and features the vocal stylings of Mighty Popo, Alanna Stuart and Marielle Rivard. The album is already creating quite a stir in the dancefloor jazz scene, prompting legendary DJ Gilles Peterson from BBC Radio 1 to enthuse, "That's made for music, that is!" Exclaim! Magazine went on to state that "the Ottawa quintet […] craft a sound as tight as the power fists that adorn the cover. Songs of resistance, revolution and positivity in the best of the afrobeat tradition.†The album is soon to be re-released worldwide through Do Right! Music, a Toronto-based label showcasing Canada’s best new jazz, funk, hip-hop and electronic music. The Souljazz Orchestra's all-original debut album, Uprooted, was released in April of 2005, also to critical acclaim. The Ottawa Fulcrum stated that the album "captures the energy and bounce that is characteristic of their live show" and that it is "definitely an all-around feel-good album, in that James Brown kinda way", while the Ottawa Sun noted that the band "lend itself equally well to afrobeat, modern jazz or JBs-style funk". Both releases have received worldwide airplay, mostly through public and campus radio, topping many Canadian station charts at #1.
