  2. Blues fans take note: MEL BROWN SATURDAY, APRIL 14TH also featuring THE STEVE STRONGMAN BAND Tickets $15 Showtime 8pm www.pepperjackcafe.com "He's probably one of the greatest guitar players in any style. I remember playing at Antone's and all these hot shot Austin guys had played before him. Mel just came up and slaughtered all of us, including me. Just murdered everybody." - Joe Louis Walker If Walker was right, then Mel Brown may be one of the greatest unknown Blues guitarists. Brown, who was born in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1939, learned the Blues from his father who played with Tommy Johnson and the Chatmon family. When Brown was sixteen he and his Les Paul moved to Los Angeles where he quickly became an in-demand session guitarist. A quick Brown bio from those days features stints with Johnny Otis, Nancy Wilson, Bobby "Blue" Bland, John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, Lightnin' Hopkins, and many others. As Brown lived the life of a musician there were many records and tours, including his first recordings as a frontman in 1967 with T-Bone Walker for the ABC Bluesway label. From 1967 to 1970 Brown subsequently released six albums for Bluesway. Then, after leading Bobby "Blue" Bland's band off and on until 1982, Brown was asked by Clifford Antone to relocate to Austin and join the Antone's house band. Throughout the 1980s Brown backed every major Blues performer who came through the club. Then, in 1989, Brown relocated to Ontario and since 2000 has released four stellar records on Electro-Fi Records. Veteran guitarist and B-3 man Mel Brown backed T-Bone Walker, John Lee Hooker and Etta James before spending more that a decade in the employ of Bobby "Blue" Bland. Today Mel Brown lives and records in Kitchener, Ontario. He received the Maple Blues "Blues with a Feeling" (Toronto Blues Society Lifetime Acheivement) Award in January 2004. Some artists Mel Brown has played and/or recorded with: Sonny Boy Williamson / Billy Preston / Lightnin' Hopkins / Eric Gale / Jimmy Witherspoon / Steve Antone / Willie Nelson / Archie Shep / B. B. King / The Crusaders / Jerry Lewis / Bobby Darin / Etta James / Buddy Guy / Johnny Otis / Bill Cosby / Jimmy McGriff / Dr. Hook / The Glaser Bros. / Barney Kessel / Albert King / Bobby Bryant / Doris Day / Angela Stehli / Maxine Brown / T-Bone Walker / John Lee Hooker / Nancy Wilson / Albert Collins / Waylon Jennings / Jesse Colter / Howard Roberts / Bobby Bland / Oliver Nelson / Andy Williams / James Cotton / Lou Ann Barton / Snooky Pryor

  4. Thanks for posting this CT. Should be a fantastic show. I heard he "kills it" out east. Opening the Hamilton show will be The Smoke Wagon Blues Band. Cover will be $10 Show starts at 8pm. Garrett Mason was raised in Truro, Nova Scotia by his mother Pam, and father, veteran Canadian Bluesman DUTCH MASON. His quest to become a blues musician started at a very early age; being surrounded by music and especially blues music, Garrett’s favorite tapes at 3 years old were Canned Heat and Buddy Rich. His list of influences is long indeed and topping that list are blues legends Albert Collins and Albert King. What really sealed the deal for Garrett to become a blues guitarist came after watching a video of Stevie Ray Vaughn “Live At the El Mocambo†- he was hooked. Garrett launched his debut CD, I’m Just a Man, at the 2004 Harvest Jazz and Blues festival in Fredericton, NB. This debut CD features Garrett’s talent for strong original songwriting, a voice that has the feel of a veteran performer plus an extraordinary aptitude for playing the electric guitar. The late Rick Jeffery once said that “Garrett is the only guitar player I know that can play Albert Collins’ style down to a Tâ€. In the past few years Garrett won the 2005 JUNO for "Best blues CD Of The Year" along with the 2005 MAPLE BLUES AWARD for "Best New Artist". He's spent time touring throughout festivals all around Ontario, Quebec & the Maritimes (opening for B.B. King & Delbert McClinton) and is now looking forward to expanding into new territories. Plans have already been made to play at festivals in the US and France, plus a brand new CD is in the works. www.pepperjackcafe.com

  9. I just saw the movie for the first time last night, in the special features there is actually a documentary talking about the "reality" that this movie is partially based on. It's quite bleak. Unfortunately my reality has the same outloook on the future of mankind. Sorry to be a downer, but face it, we're fucked(civilization and the planet that is). That is the "reality based" part I was talking about. I think this movies setting shows a very realistic future. At least a more realistic future then 99% of the movies being made today.
  10. This will be a sick/discusting show!!
  11. Thanks for the scoop. Holywood should make more reality based movies on the future. Try the scare everyone into being good.

  15. Bonde Do Role www.myspace.com/bondedorole Special Guests: Cities In Dust http://www.myspace.com/citiesindust Guest Selectors: Gary Buttrum, Donna Lovejoy Friday, April 6th 2007 @ Pepper Jack's 38 King William St. Hamilton (905)525-6666 www.pepperjackcafe.com Advance Tickets: $8, $12 day of. Brazilian MC's armed with a license to ill JONATHAN RINGEN A few years ago, Diplo -- the genre-crushing Philadelphia DJ-producer and M.I.A. collaborator -- discovered funk carioca, the booming Miami bass-ish sound of Rio de Janeiro's shantytowns. "It was, like, little children screaming about drugs over a Smiths loop and a breakbeat," says Diplo, who regularly visits Brazil. "I thought it was perfect music." Bonde do Role, the first signing to his new Mad Decent label, have an art-school take on the sound (also known as baile funk), pairing the biggest, dumbest samples ever with comically dirty shout-rapped Portuguese lyrics. "The joke is to be as stupid and cheesy as you can be," says MC and producer Pedro D'eyrot, "and people will buy it." SOUND In complete disregard for U.S. copyright law, Bonde do Role (D'eyrot, 22, MC Marina Ribatski, 21, and producer and DJ Rodrigo Gorky, 25) pile super-recognizable samples -- AC/DC, the Grease soundtrack, Tone-Loc -- into an over-the-top party-starting mix. A typical lyric (from "Melo do Caldinho"): "I was at a party/And I saw a whore/I put my tongue into her asshole/And my tongue came out all dirty." "That's the shit we're doing, man," D'eyrot says. "Nasty stuff. Sex with food, general perversion." WHAT'S NEXT The group is planning a U.S. tour this summer and is working on an LP with Diplo. "We're going to try to use some samples that are not so recognizable and try to get a guitarist," says Gorky. But for now the trio is psyched to be playing increasingly raucous live sets at home. "The crowd at the last show was a mix of playboys and, how do you say, high-class whores," says D'eyrot. "That was crazy." Rolling Stone
