  3. Some really funny folks! Players Players Serious Sad Melancholy Improve Comedy Troupe will be performing their Valentines edition show at Pepper Jack's tonight at 8pm. They will be on CH news tonight with Wendy Wolfe if anyone cares for a preview. The show is Pay What You Can. http://www.playersplayers.com/ PLAYERS PLAYERS started in Hamilton in early 2002, when six McMaster University students created The Red Hill Valley Expressed, a play that was collectively created and performed at McMaster’s Original Works festival, where it won an award for best script and a reading at Theatre Aquarius. Players Players is committed to developing plays with a variety of techniques. The collective will often develop scenes together using improvisation techniques, and also write independently. Each member takes an equal part in writing, editing, directing and performing the show. The Players are also using more and more musical numbers in each show, incorporating brilliant scores composed by Darren Barlow. Krista MacIsaac also uses her experience as a dancer to choreograph the musical numbers. www.pepperjackcafe.com

  9. Juno and Maple Blues Awards' winning Fathead are playing Pepper Jack's this Friday. With Jesse O'Brien sitting in. Alphie Smith opens http://www.myspace.com/alfiejohnsmith Adv Tix $12. Starts at 8:30pm sharp(ish). http://www.fathead.biz/ Formed in 1992, FATHEAD has developed a distinctive & unique sound characterized by solid grooves, soul-drenched melodies and ace musicianship- allowing the band to pack multiple music genres into a Blues tour de force. Three of the five band members have remained constant over the years; John Mays (lead vocals), band leader Al Lerman (harp & tenor saxophone, vocals) and Omar Tunnoch (bass, vocals). Current drummer Hayden Vialva joined the group in 2003, succeeding Chuck Keeping (2001-2003), Ed White (1993-2001) and Mike Fitzpatrick (1992). Guitarist Darran Poole replaced Teddy Leonard who left the group in 2006. Fathead's incendiary live shows have taken them far and wide, performing across the continent at high profile events such as Fredericton's Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival, The Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival, The Montreal International Jazz Fest, The Toronto Soul & Blues Fest, Festival By The Sea in New Brunswick, and Playing With Fire in Omaha, Nebraska. They have performed in Washington, DC for the Canadian Embassy, at Buffalo's Lafayette Tap Room Blues Festival, at Virginia's famed Birchmere Theater, and have opened for blues icon B.B. King at Massey Hall in Toronto. The band also backed the late Chicago bluesman Little Mack Simmons on two fine albums that were critically acclaimed internationally. The group's indie debut CD Fathead landed them a recording contract with Electro-Fi Records. Blues Weather, the band's sophomore 1998 release, garnered a Juno Award (Canada's Grammy) for Blues Recording Of The Year. Where's Your Head At? was a strong follow up in 2000 and earned several Maple Blues Award nominations, while First Class Riff-Raff won the Canadian Indie Award (2002) and was also nominated for a Juno. Their discs showcase stellar songwriting and ensemble playing, and have garnered rave reviews world wide, making FATHEAD one of the country's top roots acts. In January 2005 Fathead independently released their fifth CD, "Livelier Than Ever!" The disc features incendiary versions of some of the band's earlier studio efforts as well as several previously unreleased covers, all with that unmistakable Fathead sound. Recorded at Toronto's premier blues nightclub, the Silver Dollar, there's little wonder why this disc has become an instant fan favourite. The band is currently working on material for their next studio album (to be released in early 2007 on Electro-Fi Records) and will be touring extensively this year. Ê www.pepperjackcafe.com
  10. Very Interesting. I hope Jon Stewart stirs it up proper.
  11. Joey's cool, looking forward to hearing his new album. I heard Steve Dawson produced it, no? He also plays with Jenny Whitely a lot. I know him from years ago, being the roommate of a good friend of mine. He's come a long way since.
  12. Ok, name some comparible bands Marco. That are currently active.
  13. True, but for staight up Soul music, i'd say Sharon and the Dap-Kings. Budos is more an afrobeat-soul hybird. But Budos does kick major ass.
  14. Best live soul band on the planet! There is a clip from their first pepper jack's show here: http://ducktape.ca/film/ I hope you can open it.
  15. PJC Presents Nettwerk recording artists' Great Lake Swimmers Special guests: TBA Friday, March 23rd At The Pepper Jack Cafe 38 King William St. Hamilton www.pepperjackcafe.com (905)525-6666 $10 advance, $12 at the door. www.greatlakeswimmers.com http://www.nettwerk.com/ (January 10, 2007 – Vancouver) Nettwerk Music Group are proud to announce, the Toronto based Great Lake Swimmers have joined the Nettwerk Productions Label roster.  Delighted by the recent addition, Nettwerk co-founder Mark Jowett pronounced “We've always been big admirers of the tremendous songs and haunting voice of Tony Dekker in the Great Lake Swimmers and thus I can speak for all of Nettwerk in saying how proud and excited we are to be working with an artist whose music we believe will move many people.â€Â Tony Dekker is the singer/songwriter behind the musical project Great Lake Swimmers, and the new third full-length album Ongiara will be released in Canada on March 27, 2007. As with the first two critically acclaimed albums (“Great Lake Swimmers†2003, Weewerk and “Bodies and Minds†2005, Weewerk), “Ongiara†continues to explore the worlds of indie folk, roots music and burrito-country pop, with a focus on lyrics and the craft of songwriting. The new record is permeated with a rich natural reverb, courtesy of London, Ontario’s Aeolian Hall, which creates the magical background on which the songs are painted, with a melancholic finesse that pulls at the heartstrings at the same time. The atmospheric sound has been referred to as “ambient folk.†In addition to the core band of Tony Dekker (voice, guitar), Erik Arnesen (banjo, electric guitar), and Colin Huebert (drums, percussion, glockenspiel, timpani), the new album features special guest appearances by singer-songwriter Serena Ryder, Bob Egan of Blue Rodeo, Sarah Harmer and Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy and Arcade Fire. The title of the album was taken from the Toronto Harbour boat that carried the band to their initial recording sessions on Toronto Island with Dale Morningstar. “Ongiara,†however, was mainly recorded in the Aeolian Hall, the centuries-old acoustic jewel in the heart of London, Ontario. It was engineered by Andy Magoffin, and mixed at the renowned House of Miracles. The group is celebrating the new album release with the launch of a full Canadian tour. that will begin in Montreal on March 15th.
