  11. PJC tonight/thursday. "They say layers are the best protection against Canadian cold, and Hamilton's Ryan Ferguson takes that advice to heart. He specializes in wrapping languid guitars and keyboards in effervescent reverb and fuzz, creating ethereal soundscapes anchored by slowly soaring melodies." ~Montreal Mirror March 2, 2006 "The compound moniker that one-man-band Ryan Ferguson has chosen to record under is more elegantly efficient than any other more expansive characterization of his music could be. The music both pulses and drifts, and exudes some of the same twinkly warmth for which the German label Morr Music has become well known. In a word, electroluminescent." ~ Toronto Star December 3, 2005 Electroluminescent Pearson Brothers Sarah Good http://www.myspace.com/electroluminescent www.pepperjackcafe.com $5, 9pm.

    Hamilton Question

Welcome Mango. Hope the Hammer treats you well.
  15. PJC presents Oakland California's Souls Of Mischief Saturday, April 21st, 2007. With Guests: MJÂ www.mojorecords.com DJ Realistic (Peoples Republic/Warsaw Pack) @ Pepper Jack's 38 King William St. Hamilton www.pepperjackcafe.com (905)525-6666 www.hieroglyphics.com Comprised of A-Plus, Tajai, Phesto, and Opio, the Souls of Mischief may be the group that best represents the Bay Area rap collective Hieroglyphics. In 1995, the group officially formed Hieroglyphics, with rappers Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Casual, Pep Love, Jaybiz, and producer, Domino. Starting out as young, brash, and cocky high school students, the Souls hadn't even graduated school yet when they signed to Jive Records. But their reputation, in the form of unreleased demo tracks like the infamous "Cabfare" and "Souls of Mischief," preceded them. Today more underground and bootleg tapes of Souls material is circulating the West than that of any other group. The Souls have even been credited with spawning the phenomenon now known as "backpacker" hip hop fans: savvy suburban kids of all ethnicities who are true connoisseurs of hip hop, as opposed to teenage consumers of novelty "rap". Through major label releases and scads of underground and compilation tracks, such as "Airborne Rangers," from the Industry Records Process of Elimination album, Souls of Mischief have become a force to be reckoned with, ripping microphones and proving themselves in countless ciphers and battles. Not even their well-publicized and acrimonious split with Jive after their second album could break their stride. They bounced back without missing a beat, representing Hiero to the fullest on the posse album Third Eye Visions and dropping their third LP, Focus, on the newly inaugurated Hieroglyphics Imperium label. But the Souls Of Mischief aren't merely just battle rhymers, though that's what they're best known for. With Los Angeles contemporaries the The Pharcyde and Freestyle Fellowship, they have helped move the spotlight on skills and creativity in hip hop back to the West. Adv Tickets $25, $30 day of show.
  16. PJC presents PTR Recordings artists' Voice With Moonstarr. Also featuring: ablockparentcommunity www.ablockparentcommunity.ca www.myspace.com/ablockparentcommunity And Milimetrik (Quebec City/Below the Sea) www.myspace.com/millimetrik Guest DJ: Paajo(Kojo) Saturday, February 24th, 2007 Doors 9pm, $8. www.pepperjackcafe.com 38 King Williams St. Hamilton (905)525-6666 www.myspace.com/voicey www.ptrmusic.com www.featherperm.com A child actress coming from a family with roots in the entertainment industry, Voice was almost a showbiz train-wreck herself. Fortunately, her people's roots run way deeper than Hollywood, both her parents calling New Orleans, Louisiana home, and raising young Voice equal parts in both cities. Her mother is celebrated jazz vocalist Zardis, who mentored under Horace Silver, Herb Mickman (former musical director of Sarah Vaughan), the late Billy Higgins and Barry Harris, among many other notables. Her sister was part of PG-13, a group that had a song called "What's Your Name?" on the Sound Control Mob's Compton Compilation, which was released in 1989 and featured the first commercially released song from MC Eiht's crew Compton's Most Wanted. And that is the Voice paradox in a nutshell: 50% jazz, 50% foot in yo ass. Her tone is smooth, warm, sultry, steady; but it's the faintest tilt that she gives the most random words and syllables that reminds you (if you are actually listening) that she ain't here for baby-talk and holding hands, unless you're her baby or her man. Voice was first introduced to the world (well, Japan) on 2002's The Christie And Dupont EP, an import-only release on Canadian label Public Transit Recordings produced by PTR mascot Moonstarr, who has gone on to become Voice's most constant partner in crime, producing her follow-up outing "BB Girl", which appeared on the Scattered Snares Across The Track album from the same year (Twisted Funk Records). Her debut solo album Gumbo, also released courtesy of the venerable folks at PTR, is an intoxicating stew of the cities and experiences that birthed it: Los Angeles, Toronto, New Orleans, New York, hip-hop, jazz, house, lounge, being broke, being frustrated, finding love, creating love, putting it all together and moving forward. You know, everyday life shit. Just way more interesting.

    You Favourite Show

I don't think I could pick one defining "best show" I've ever seen. But I have to give props to Phish. My first phish show ever was Portland Maine 12-30-93. While most of that show I was just in shock at seeing this fucking crazy band. It was the second show that I was able to appreciate more, having gained my sea/phish legs. My second was the next day's New Years show in Worchestrer Mass. While both shows blew my mind and opened it to a whole other realm of "Jamband" outside of the Grateful Dead. I'd have to lean towards the New Years show. They played 3 high energy sets. There never seemed to be any dull moments. While in later years they would make some slower songs that were good to sit down for or go to the wash room for(IMO). The NYE show seemed like a relentless pounding of zinger zfter zinger. The energy and spontanaity and general freshness of Phish definitely had me in awe. AND,when they had the stage set up like a dayglo aquariam and floated down from the rafters in scuba gear and climbed into this gigantic clam, to start the count down, WTF, that was good. 12-31-93 Worcester Centrum, Worcester, MA 1: Llama, Guelah Papyrus, Stash, Ginseng Sullivan, Reba -> Peaches en Regalia, I Didn't Know, Run Like an Antelope* 2: Tweezer, Halley's Comet-> Poor Heart, It's Ice, Fee, Possum, Lawn Boy, You Enjoy Myself 3: Auld Lang Syne-> Down With Disease Jam#, Split Open and Melt, Lizards, Sparkle, Suzy Greenberg, HYHU-> Cracklin' Rosie-> HYHU, Harry Hood, Tweezer Reprise E: Golgi Apparatus, Amazing Grace *With Tom Marshall on vocals. #Performed early so Mike could use the footage to make the video. This wasn't really an official debut of "Down With Disease"; the song was not played. 04-04-94 Burlington is the real debut.
  18. Looking forward to the show myself. Congrats on the good Ric Taylor banter. Not always achievable. haha.
