  1. An LA based band heavily influenced by the Laurel Canyon 70's sound. They have two albums- North Hills and Nothing is Wrong- and their new album comes out on April 2. I'd say their greatest strength is their songwriting, but many find them too poppy as it never gets out there. Wilco fans would find a friend in Dawes.

Check out Nothing is Wrong. If you don't like it on the first listen through then you're done and don't need to investigate any further. Its a get it on the first run through type of album.

    FWIW:

    1) lead singer and guitarist Taylor Goldsmith was also a part of the indie supergroup Middlebrother with members of Deer Tick and Delta Spirit.

    2) Jackson Browne tapped the band to be his touring outfit over the past few years

    3) Robbie Robertson used Dawes as his backup band on the 2012 release How to be Clairvoyant

nb. I did all of this from memory on a weak connection in the parking lot of a Tims, so no fact checking was done.

  2. "Freaker @ 02/27/13 06:34 AM"

Bet you wished you had stayed in bed eh?

Also I notice the theme is Take Me to the River. Ummm isn't David Byrne playing at that other big Ottawa festival. They had better get talking to Al Greens people.

The pricing is more than fair especially considering the Pick 3 or 5 packs - but when I look at each individual day there isn't one that wows. Of course you can also see that there are approx 2 artists per stage announced, so lots more is coming.

I hope this means Dawes comes to Toronto. Go see them at bluesfest, they are so so good.

I sure hope they do too. I am a bit worried about the new album though. I've read that they want to distance themselves from their Laurel Canyon influences- and upon listening to their first single, they have but I wish they hadn't.

  3. Not only is London sold out, but tix are selling for 4 to 8x face value on secondary resale sites.

While it makes sense they will be added; the London show is on the 16th right after Bluesfest, I feel it would be a bit of dirty pool. The Pearl Jam boards were lit up with people who were deciding to travel to London simply because of the "only Canadian date of the summer" notation.

  4. Boy that was a shit show..... the 'Buy Tickets' button didn't appear until 11:20. Luckily for me by that time I had done a little URL manipulation and already purchased my seats.

Book of Mormon -> Charles Bradley = Sweet

  5. I got a bunch of these for Christmas from my bro:

I didn't love it, but couldn't put it down. The combination of flavours and aromas made pegging down everything that was going on pretty challenging.

  6. I don't have an AMEX, but will be looking for tickets during the general onsale on Feb 19 at 11am.

The tickets for the good Detroit dates and times sold out in one day.

The last time I was in NYC we couldn't find tix for less than $200 each.

  7. The latest twist, though, comes from Statistics Canada. The national data collector published a significant portion of the postal code database on Feb. 5 on their website, free for anyone to download.

The “Forward Sortation Area†data set, now available to the general public, is the geographic boundaries of the first three letters of every postal code in the country. It defines what M4W means and is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to businesses and analysts who work with postal code data

This just isn't true. I worked with postal codes a lot a few years ago and this info was available on the Canada Post website if you knew where to look.

You could get household counts, avg income and even maps of the area.

Furthermore if you knew what you were looking for, you could also find info on the LDU (the second half of the postal code) by analyzing the Letter Carrier routes that were available on their website.

Postal code data is very valuable to advertisers so I can see why CP would want to protect its business especially considering the current demand for addressed letter mail.
