  1. It does look sweet. I'm sure there was a lot of thought put into this mixer. I'm gonna pick it up for the sole reason that I missed a lot of the acts due to overlapping schedules. I'll still miss Tweedy though.

I too am disappointed that Wilco isn't on this. Though since I saw seven acts on this mix I will still pick it up.

I was excited about seeing the Black Crowes at bonnaroo not knowing who else was in the band, now that Marc Ford is back in the fold I am freaking out!

And now I get to see them in Toronto before bonnaroo, which is great.

The only unfortunate thing is that they couldn't figure something out with Steve Gorman, but all in all this band they got together is better than I expected!

  3. Holy fu©k I know it's old news but this is the first I've heard about Rachael's accident. Or I was to drunk to remember when I was told, give her my best.

Thanks Laslo for the kind words about Rachael I will tell her you give her your best. It's old news because I didn't advertise it here when it happened because I wanted to make sure she was alright first and I wanted the whole car situation taken care of as well.

  4. Absolutely they have done a bunch of really good work, Metallica's "St. Anger" (actually shot in San Quentin, yes those are real convicts, they even used some of them as crew for the shoot), they have done some Ben Harper videos, Black Eyed Oeas "Shut Up", Foo Fighterslot's of cool sh!t. They are totally normal young guys, just with a lot of talent. They also directed a movie that came out a while back called "Out Cold", skiing/snowboarding movie starring Jason London, Victoria Silvstedt (oh yeah!!!), it's really funny, a couple of the guys from anchorman are in it too.

I didn't like Metallica's last album too much but that "St. Anger" video kicked ass!

  5. Not that it has a lot of relevence to this thread, but Ben Stiller did not direct the "Taylor" video. It was directed by the Malloys, 3 brothers who direct music videos commercials and films. They did a surfing one called "Thicker Than Water" and I think that is when they first came into contact with Jack. I don't know if anyone has seen the video for "Afternoon Delight" from Anchorman but they did that as well. The company I work for represents The Malloys in Canada for TV commercials. That's my information session of the day...

    Cheers

Thanks for that. On jack johnson's official website messageboard I just asked who directed "Taylor" and I had yet to get a response. If and when I do there is no way it will be as informed as the one you gave me.

BTW I think "Taylor" is a great video Ben Stiller is hilarious in it.

  6. The article isn't stating that the mere act of doing a cover is crass or insincere and goes to lengths to mention the notion of a cover really being a "tribute" to music that has inspired the artists.

He seems to be singling out the current trend of bands with original catalogues doing a cover in order to break into the market. It is a trend and I don't think he's wrong to be put off by it.

And, also, he seems to be referring specifically to the pop/rock music genres. In other idioms, jazz and folk in particular, covers and reinterpretations have long been expected and accepted. So, drawing on Miles Davis for comparison is a bit of a stretch.

It is not a current trend of artists covering someone to break into a market. How many artists in the sixties had their own material but used a Bob Dylan cover to great success? The list is too long to mention.

The trend of popular music artists covering someone to break into the market has been seen since the birth of rock and roll in the mid fifties if not earlier in other aforementioned genres like country, blues and jazz.

  7. This is the funniest thing I have ever heard from Leno!

Leno Wants Exception To Jackson Gag Order

Jay Leno, who has been subpoenaed for Michael Jackson's child molestation trial, wants the judge to lift or clarify a gag order that could keep the comedian from one of his most vital sources of punch lines.

Attorneys for the star of NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" said Judge Rodney S. Melville's sweeping order barring anyone involved in the case from discussing it outside court "could be interpreted to limit Mr. Leno's ability to publicly speak about the trial."

Leno's motion, released by Santa Barbara (Calif.) County Superior Court yesterday (March 2), was filed Feb. 18, a day after his lawyers said his subpoena was served.

"This motion was made on the grounds that this court could not possibly have intended its gag order, which was issued more than a year ago, to limit public personalities like Mr. Leno from commenting on public proceedings in this case," attorneys Theodore Boutrous and Michael H. Dore wrote.

Applying the gag order to Leno would be prior restraint in violation of the First Amendment and the California Constitution, the motion said.

If the gag order is applied anyway, the motion said, the court should clarify that the order "only limits Mr. Leno's ability to disclose evidence of which he may have direct, first-hand knowledge, assuming only for the sake of argument that any such evidence exists."

The motion requests that Melville expedite action on the entertainer's request.

A "Tonight Show" spokesperson she could not comment on the matter because of legal concerns. She declined to say whether the subpoena had led Leno to change the contents of his nightly monologue of jokes.

Jackson's defense contends the family of the boy accusing the pop star of molestation targeted celebrities for fraud, in particular by using the fact that the child was a cancer patient.

Jackson attorney Thomas Mesereau Jr. said during his opening statement to the jury that the family sought money from Leno, who was so suspicious he called Santa Barbara police to report that "something was wrong. They were looking for a mark."

  8. Thanks for the review Timmy... nicely written... I enjhoyed the Toronto show last yr but am not sure hes a performer i will see regularly... I feel his music holds up better on CD... which in no way is a bad thing!

    Thanks for the kind words.

As I stated above, I wouldn't have been at Sam's yesterday if Rachael wasn't such a big fan Jack Johnson.

That being said it was a intimate and fun performance. Who knows when the next time I could ever see Jack solo acoustic again infront of 400 people? His next gig in Toronto will be his (I believe) third in a row at the Molson Amphitheatre (the first of which was opening for Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals in 2003).

  9. If you're performing a cover tune, that likely means you are a fan of the artist you are covering, or at least the song.

The artist in question that is performing a cover song is then putting their signature on the material that inspired them, enough so to learn and peform that song.

Why can't you be inspired by someone elses music and/or lyrics? If you're performing most Bob Dylan songs you're not going to be inspired by his words? If you're performing a song out of the Beatles canon you're not going to inspired by the music?

What then of the Miles Davis performance and recording of George Gershwin's "Porgy & Bess" was that not inspired?

  10. timmy, i'm glad rachel is ok!

hope your insurance is taking care of you properly.

    Steve

    Hey secondtube,

Thanks for the kind words about Rachael.

And yes my insurance company has been absolutely fantastic!

My insurance policy is with Meloche Monnex and I have a preferred rate being a university graduate.

When Rachael got into the accident on February 21, thankfully she came away without a scratch. Unfortunately my car wasn't so lucky.

My 2002 Ford Taurus SEL was a write off.

I called Meloche Monnex after I picked up Rachael and got everything out of the car. They immediately gave me a rental car for a week, and since without my asking added two days and then with me asking added one more day until I picked up my new car.

The initially were going to give a check for $13,000 plus as my Taurus had over 79,000 kilometres on it. I did some online research and they bumped up the check to over $15,000, which I feel is more than fair.

I have already finalized that claim as I picked up the check this week at their office in Toronto on Yonge Street.

Then I purchased a 2005 Ford Freestyle Limited and my since it had been over five and half years since my last accident I'm got this claim for free and I am still a five star driver so my insurance a $48,000 vehicle is only going to be $186.00 up from $153.00 for a $31,000 vehicle.

On top of that Rachael was the one that caused the accident and she was just added to my insurance as a secondary driver and they didn't even bother asking about anything else about her history!

I honestly couldn't have been happier with how this whole ordeal has gone. Firstly, Rachael is one hundred percent alright. Secondly, everything with Meloche Monnex went through smoothly and I feel I have been treated in a fair and respectful way.

I spoke to Ford Credit today about the check and the person on the phone is also with Meloche Monnex and he too was raving about this company.

  11. Jack Johnson at Sam the Record Man on Wednesday March 2, 2005 was quite the intimate and fun performance. To get into the show you had to be one of the first four hundred people to purchase Johnson's newest effort "In Between Dreams" (2005 Brushfire Records/Universal) which was released the day before the gig.

Jack came on to the stage in the DVD room at Sam's on Yonge Street just a minute past 4pm. The girls screams were loud and long for this laid back musician/surfer.

Though funnily enough it was the men that was giving much of the love to Jack. A gentleman infront of me gave Jack a bracelet to his publicist before the performance and Jack came out with it on. Jack then asked who gave the gift to him and thanked the person right in the front row. Stating how it was nice how it looked like a watch but didn't tell time and how he was always late anyway.

Then while Jack was performing his new song "No Other Way" a guy from the crowd screamed "I love you in a heterosexual way!" Jack replied "I love you too." Then as he went into the second verse he brokedown and said laughing "I was trying to keep it together. I wouldn't mind if you loved me in a really gay way. I love everybody. Here's the next verse."

Finally a guy from the crowd asked Jack if he wanted a lay (spelling? One of those Hawaiian flower necklaces) Jack said yes. Then he said "Usually girls give me lays." He went on to say how he was getting a lot of love from the guys at the show, lays, bracelets and I love you and asked "Where's all the support from the ladies?" The girls responded with a huge ovation.

Jack performed the entire thirteen song, nearly fifty minute set solo acoustic on a stool. Someone after the first song asked if Jack could stand while he performed so people could see better. Jack said "Want me to stand up? I don't have a strap or I would. I'll try and have better posture. To help one or two."

Concentrating material from his latest effort he performed eight songs from "In Between Dreams." Though much of the new material was familiar to his fans as many of the songs were performed on last years 2004 Brushfire Tour, including "Banana Pancakes" and the short song where Jack sings in french "Belle."

For "Belle" Jack said how it's funny how Americans think he's being all cool by singing the song in French, which wasn't his intention. He said "I should have translated it for Americans. 'Hey beautiful, I can't speak french.' It's a pretty idiotic song. People think I'm Spanish."

Jack also performed older material stating after the first song "I know the album (I love it when artists still call CD's albums) just came out, so I'll play some old and new songs." Going into a great version of "Flake" without the breakdown at the end.

At the end of "Taylor" Jack said that while that song is played "Is it just me or do you sometimes think of Ben Stiller making the mean face?" Referring to Stiller acting as the on screen director in the video for "Taylor" (I'm assuming Stiller also directed the video.).

Also at the show he told the crowd that the new song "Do You Remember" was a continuation of "Bubble Toes." Initially Jack referred to the new songs as "Bubble Toes Part 2" to much applause and stated that he felt that he tricked everybody and they were going to feel cheated so the next song was "Bubble Toes."

The show closed with "Mudfootball." At the beginning of the show he mentioned how the Molson Ampitheatre show last September was one of the best shows of the year. Personally I thought it was one of those cheesy lines that every artist says at a show. Then Jack joked and said that he would say that at the next city he was going to play and I appreciated the honesty. But he then said that they used the Molson Amphitheatre performance of "Mudfootball" on a Japanese CD single. So that made me think at least he felt the performance of that song was worthy to be distributed. So the likelihood of the Toronto show being one of the better performances higher than I initially thought.

Also it says something that Jack Johnson will be closing his 2005 summer tour at the Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto on September 17. With tickets going on sale March 12 through www.ticketmaster.ca

  12. Man that sounds like a kickass show. Thick N Thin, High Head Blues, Nebekaneezer, Wiser Time, and No Speak No Slave would have been highlights for me. Too bad I didn't get to this gig, I probably was barely aware of the Crowes at the time.

Would love to make it to NYC at the end of the month but it looks doubtful. Timmy have you heard anything re: new lineup?

p.s. looks like I found a guy with a tape of the show...I'm going to see about setting up a trade, and if I grab it, will happily share. I know how great it is to finally get ahold of a great show you attended...

    http://www.phishhook.com/lists/iknowustrider?listID=0

I too am trying to get a copy of this show from a crowes fan I know. I'll let you know if that pans out.

As for the line up, nothing is officially announced yet. Right now what I've heard most is:

    Chris Robinson - Diva

    Rich Robinson - The Prince

    Eddie Harsch - keyboards

    Sven Pipien - Very bass

    Bill Dubrow - Drums

    Neal Casal - Guitar

  13. I thought I wasn't able to go to this because the wristband policy was one wristband per person with the purchase of one CD.

I really wanted to go with Rachael so if I couldn't get two wristbands then I wasn't going to go.

Luckily I checked on Tuesday (I was in Toronto to get my insurance check for the car Rachael wrecked on February 21st, she's okay the car wasn't) and they let me put two wristbands on my arm so I could take Rachael.

I had seen Jack Johnson before at bonnaroo and then again last year at the Molson Amphitheatre.

At the Amphitheatre I was shocked to see how many people were dressed up like surfers! It is Toronto not Los Angeles for goodness sacks.

Today with snow on the ground I don't think everyone will be dressed that way. But I'll let you know how it goes.
