  1. Happy 63rd Birthday Lou,

You are one of the coolest people to have ever walked the earth. May you have many more of these days walking the earth being cool.

    from www.billboard.com

THIS DAY IN MUSIC for March 2, 2005.

1942 - Lou Reed (Louis Firbank) is born in Freeport, N.Y. He is the lead singer of the New York rock band the Velvet Underground. His biggest solo single is the 1973 top 20 hit "Walk on the Wild Side." Rap group Marky Mark & the Funky Bunch "sample" the song in their 1991-92 top 10 hit "Wildside."

  2. Pete is my biggest musical influence. Has been for over 25 years. His playing continues to evolve, especially his lead guitar work. He's never been overly prolific as a songwriter, but his collection of songs over his career are some of the most important in popular music. I'd walk through a hurricane to see him live. Roger? I'd go if he was putting on a free show.

So if Roger Daltrey was playing the Danforth Music Hall for $20 you wouldn't attend the gig?

  3. Now I know what I have to buy on CD Tuesday April 5th.

  4. Pete may be the soul of The Who, but Keith Moon was the heart.

If Keith and Pete were the only two members alive ( as if Keith could live ), I'd be ok with them calling themselves The Who.

Not to knock Keith Moon (he is easily in my top 5 of favorite drummers) but it's easier to recreate Moon's drumming than Daltrey's voice.

No doubt Moon was more talented than Daltrey as a musician, but as a voice (and by voice I mean each persons individual instrument, including vocals) I would say that to recreate the Who on stage live Daltrey is far more important of a figure.

If destiny was reversed and it was Moon and Entwistle that lived their is no way they could call themselves the Who.

I see your point in the fact that instead of still calling themselves the Who they could call the band Townshend and Daltrey, much like the way that Jimmy Page and Robert Plant instead of Led Zeppelin called themselves Page and Plant.

Either way I'll still be in attendance at their next show in Toronto

  6. Yes I have. The last time Rog, Pete and company came to Toronto. A really great show. They continued the tour without the recently departed Entwistle. I had trouble calling them The Who at the time. I preferred " Roger & Pete ".

Two too many members are gone now for me to feel comfortable with any name associated with The Who. I don't like feeling that they are capitalizing on their name like current incarnations of The Doors, Lynryd Skynyrd have been doing. The Dead aren't innocent either.

I would maybe feel this way if it were just Roger going out and calling himself the Who. But in my eyes Pete is the heart and soul of the Who, and as long as it's Pete and Roger I have no problem in going to their shows.

One of my only musical regrets is not seeing Pink Floyd in 1994. At the time I felt (and to some extent still do) that Roger Waters was the heart and soul of Pink Floyd and that since Waters had a problem with David Gilmour and company calling themselves Pink Floyd I didn't go out of protest.

Now over a decade later I have since seen Roger Waters once in Toronto but have yet to see Gilmour by himself or as apart of Pink Floyd. If I never see Gilmour live I it might end up being the biggest missed concert regret in my life.

Since I don't care what the circumstance is if I love an artist I will go and see them even if other past members of the group I'm about to see have a problem with them touring under the specific name on the ticket.

  7. I'll see DMB at bonnaroo during their headline set. I don't know if I'll make it to Darien or any other gigs. The only other DMB show I will definitely be attending is if Farm Aid is in the North East again this year.

    DMB Unveils Summer Tour Plans

Dave Matthews Band will supports its new studio album on tour this summer in North America, beginning June 1 in Maryland Heights, Mo., and running through a Sept. 7 finale in Bonner Springs, Kan. Members of the band's Warehouse fan organization will get first crack at tickets through March 14; most shows go on-sale April 2 to the general public.

Beyond multiple-night stands at such familiar venues as Camden, N.J.'s Tweeter Center and the Verizon Wireless Music Center just outside Indianapolis, DMB will play an Aug. 12-13 stand at the 41,000-capacity SBC Park in San Francisco and an Aug. 19-21 run at the Gorge Amphitheatre just outside Seattle.

The band's as-yet-untitled RCA set is expected in May and will likely feature such tracks as "Hello Again," "Joy Ride," "Die Trying" and "Old Dirt Road." Working with producer Mark Batson, DMB has built songs from ideas generated by each member, prior to Matthews adding his vocals.

"It's amazing that we really never thought to work this way before," violinist Boyd Tinsley says in a video clip on the band's new album-dedicated Web site. "The result is pretty amazing; pretty mind-blowing for all of us. It's really groovin', really up music. It's funky. It's fun."

DMB began road-testing some of the material last year, but even these perennial box-office barons experienced first-hand the treacherous touring environment of 2004. After five straight years among the top 10 touring acts, the quintet came in 12th last year, grossing $37.5 million and drawing 881,730 fans to 43 shows reported to Billboard Boxscore.

Before the summer tour, DMB will play the first Australian shows of its career later this month, as well as appear at the annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in late April. A visit to the Bonnaroo festival is slotted in for mid-June.

  8. I can't believe I missed this birthday, given The Who are my favourite band ( along with the Allmans ).

Happy birthday Rog, you old sheet-metal worker you!

Now, break Who2 up as soon as possible.

Wouldn't it be the Who4? And why should Roger and Pete break up?

I have seen the Who(3 and 4) 5 times (4 times the Who3 and 1 time the Who4) and they were all great gigs.

It's sad that Keith and John are gone (may they both rest in peace) but that doesn't mean what Pete and Roger continue to do can't still be great.

Have you even seen any recent incarnations of the Who?

  9. I seem to remember someone getting shot dead at the last 50 Cent concert in Toronto.

If you go to a 50 Cent concert you should definitely think to wear a kevlar bulletproof jacket!

You would have to pay me a lot of cash ot attend one of his gigs.

Man Shot During 50 Cent NYC Radio Appearance

A man was shot in the leg last night (Feb. 28) in the lobby of a New York radio station while 50 Cent was making an on-air appearance, police said. The rapper, who was at the station promoting the upcoming release of his Shady/Aftermath/Interscope album "The Massacre," was not harmed in the incident.

According to Newsday, the injured man was a member of 50 Cent's entourage. The newspaper reported that the shooting happened shortly after the rapper announced he was dropping his protégé the Game from his hip-hop clique, G-Unit.

The victim, a 24-year-old Los Angeles man who was not identified, was shot in the left leg. Officials said he was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital and was listed in stable condition early today.

The shooting occurred shortly about 10 p.m. at WQHT-FM (Hot 97), according to police spokesperson Sgt. Kevin Farrell. No arrests had been made. Police were investigating the incident.

Spokespeople for 50 Cent and Interscope were not available for comment.

In 2001, rapper Lil' Kim's entourage engaged in a shootout at the same radio station that left one man wounded. Her bodyguard was sentenced to 12 years in prison for that shooting and she is about to stand trial on perjury and conspiracy charges connected to the incident.

  10. This is the last time I saw the Robinson brothers perform together live. I've seen Chris three times since, Rich twice since, Marc Ford once since and Steve Gorman twice since, but no Crowes.

I can't wait until bonnaroo so I don't have to say it's been over six years since I've seen the Robinson brothers together live!

  12. anyone know what happened to the original footage from PJC?

Scott said the El Mocambo footage was superior. Not performance wise, but filming wise. That was why Scott used the Toronto show.

Though I think Scott said that the PJC material too might see the light of day? I'm not sure.

  13. To SevenSeasJim and your question at hand.

I have two fairly well known sayings.

First, the more you know the less you understand.

    Second, ignorance is bliss.

From what I can tell from your initial thread here, you have seeked out knowledge so you fall into the first category.

Seek out knowledge and know that when things really do go wrong, as tragedy on a global scale will occur (and is occuring) in our lifetime, you can take comfort that you will be mentally prepared based on the foresight that you will have acquired because of the knowledge you have gained.

The second saying is a lie. Ignorance is not bliss. The ignorant among are the most fearful in society. You need not look further than bigots and racists in all forms. They are in a constant state of fear based on their lack of understanding.

Seek truth in all things. Pissed off on occasion you may become. But think of all the great civil rights leaders through out the ages, were they not pissed off?

It's good to be pissed off!

The ignorant may think they are happy, but they do not have a firm foundation in reality and it can easily be shaken.

It sound to me like you have already found yourself on the rock of knowledge, it is impossible to go to the sand now.

  14. I find it hard enough to get my own life going how i want it without the annoyances of paying attention to politics and 'world issues' (or even regional ones)

I find they don't impact me personally and i don't miss watching the news...i skim over most of the newspaper - great that some people are making a living bringing information to people but frankly it's a waste of my time.

none of these events will personally affect my well being. the issues that actually will require protest and organized resistance. i don't have the interest or energy to do that nowadays anyway.

i can't be bothered. that might make me seem 'counterproductive' but i don't really give a flying fu©k.

You're right politics and 'world issues' don't affect your well being.

How deep is your head in the sand? Can you breath?

  15. That's amazing!

Hopefully this helps Phil Collins to decide to get back into the Genesis fold!

The Musical Box has also had Steve Hackett perform with them before.

They are definitely the best tribute band I have ever seen live. It is like you got into Doc's DeLorean with Marty and you went back to 1973-74 and went to an actual Genesis concert!

  16. I was inquiring about getting myself a copy since I have yet to see it.I haven't heard anything about the band releasing it and according to Scott its alright to share it.

    Hey Greg,

I saw the first set of the film at a screening that Scott put on a month or so ago. It was great to see the Fat Cats on such a big screen!

At the theatre Scott had a draw for a copy of the DVD and I won So just let me know if you want to borrow the copy and burn the DVD? I would be more than happy to do that, since you are always so kind with me and burning stuff.

I would burn a copy for you but I don't have a DVD burner.

  17. Seeing them and TMBG at moe.down was a friggin concert highlight of my life!

yep, that was a very enlightening experience for me. I was very impressed by the music and production. This is where the DVD mix of that disc is on par with their live production.

It's great to have them in your living room with their 5 1 mix and the crazy colours from the HDTV vid filling the room. It makes me imagine getting a projector and spraying their graphix on a huge wall but also passing the projection through some smoke!

Who wants a party like that?

That would be a great party!

I have seen the Flaming Lips live four times now (1. w/ Beck @ Massey Hall '02. 2. @ bonnaroo '03. 3. @ Sarstock '03. 4. New Years Eve w/ Wilco @ MSG '04) and they put on such a fun show that I would only pass them by for my alltime favorite acts (Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney and a few more).

I enjoyed the Flaming Lips on New Years Eve as much as either Phish New Years show I witnessed (1. Big Cypress '99. 2. Miami '03.)and the Lips weren't even the headlining act at the show (Wilco was).

I'm so looking forward to their next studio album (coming out this spring) and the release of their film "Christmas on Mars" (it's only a year and a half late).

I feel that "The Soft Bulletin" and "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" are two of the best albums to be released in the last quarter of a century.
