Fleck Splitting Time With Four Side Projects

Bela Fleck is taking 2005 off from touring with the Flecktones, but he will still be very busy with a number of new projects. According to his official Web site, Fleck is currently recording an album in Africa with native musicians, sessions for which will also yield a future documentary DVD. Fleck will report on the experience weekly on National Public Radio's "The World."

After returning from Africa, Fleck will begin a series of performances with Bryan Sutton and Cassey Driessen as the Acoustic Trio on March 26 at the Suwannee Festival in Live Oak, Fla. Other confirmed appearances include Merlefest in North Carolina in late April, Bonnaroo in mid-June and the Johnny Keenan Banjo Festival in late September in Longford, Ireland.

But Fleck will spend most of the summer performing with !Trio! alongside jazz bassist Stanley Clarke and violinist Jean Luc Ponty. The group is crafting original material to perform at North American jazz festivals and during a July European run.

Stretching into late November, Fleck will play 10 dates with longtime collaborator/bassist Edgar Meyer. The pair is also planning to work on its second concerto next year, on the heels of their 2004 album, "Music for Two."

Fleck will return to his main band when the year is up, noting that "The Flecktones have a new album recorded already and will release it when we come back on the road in early 2006."

  2. "from what i know of TimmyB, he is no trust funder.

you'd be surprised how much ya'll saved if you didn't drink or smoke (anything)." - Secondtube

I don't want anyone to freak out cause this is solely intended as ajoke but from what I now know of TimmyB, he is a narc ;) ::

I was called a narc back in my university days (Carleton University 1994-1997). All my friends were "cool" and I wasn't, but we all still hung out. People started to wonder why I was always hanging out with people that used drugs when I didn't, so they called me a narc.

I told them "It's all about the music, man, the music is all that matters." I still feel the same way today.

And for the record I'm an autoworker at Ford Motor Company of Canada in the Oakville Assembly Plant, not a trust fund baby. All of my fellow brothers and sisters in the union who started around the same time as me have houses, are married and are starting to have children. Instead I go to fifty shows plus a year.

  3. Timmy B, that's pretty sweet... But you do know Benevento/Russo isn't a Phish side project right? Unless you meant the GRaB Trio (Benevento/Russo/Gordon)... Very impressive list, but a lot of acts I personally would have skipped... Hell, I've even seen Cavern...

The Benevento/Russo show I that I added to the list is the The Duo featuring Mike Gordon at New Years Eve in NYC at B.B. King's Bar & Grill.

  4. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I'm very sad Esau, to me Larry Campbell was by far the best musician on stage with Bob Dylan and had hoped he would never leave Dylan's band. Do diversified playing everything from electric and acoustic guitars, String Bender guitars, lap and pedal steels, mandolins, banjos, and on and on.

I will miss him when I see Dylan again to be sure.

  5. timmyb,

if you rhymed all that off the top of your head, you're the official 'rain man' of the skank. thats a lot of shows!

I dont know about counting phish sideprojects as phish shows... :)

As I stated in the brackets there is a breakdown to the shows I've attended.

Phish (Including side projects 49 times. Trey Anastasio Band 7 times, Oysterhead 2 times, Dave Matthews & Friends 2 times, Vida Blue 2 times, Leo Kottke & Mike Gordon once, The Benevento/Russo Duo once and Jazz Mandolin Project once)

Based on the breakdown I've seen Phish 33 times and the artist I've seen most is Trey Anastasio with a total of 44 shows.

  6. Classic Albums Live: Wings "Band On the Run"

The Phoenix Concert Theatre, Toronto, ON

    Thu, Feb 24, 2005 09:00 PM

    from www.ticketmaster.ca

** TICKETS CANNOT BE PICKED UP AT THE CLUB **

    This is a Tribute Band

    Legal Age 19+

    $12.00 CDN plus service charges.

Go to www.classicalbumslive.com for more information.

I've attended the last two Classic Albums Live at the Phoenix in Toronto and it is a great experience. The artists on stage are top notch local Toronto area musicians and if you look on the official website you can see they perform in other cities in the United States of America as well other Canadian cities.

I'm looking forward to seeing "Band on the Run" songs that I will likely never see Sir Paul McCartney perform live, songs like "Mamunia" and "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five."

Anyone else on here in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) going to make it tomorrow?

Also my only performances (so far) of "Shelter From the Storm" and "Knocking On Heaven's Door."

  10. Happy Birthday Brian,

Looking back in time you are the starting point for me being introduced into this whole little community. One day I might forgive you for that.

All the best my friend my you have many more in health and happiness, or at least one of the two.

  11. i'd go see the boss! fu©kin' right!!

    probably a cougar trap though...

and, i'm with Rob (not Bob), Highway Patrolman is a good song.

almost brings a tear to my eye. :)

now, that pretty much covers my knowledge of bruce.

but i learned something... he wrote blinded by the light eh?

    crazy, what a douche. ha.

I was wondering when I posted about "Blinded by the Light" how many people wouldn't have known that the boss wrote the song?

Thanks for letting me know that questcequecest.

Interstingly enough this was today is the annivesary of Manfred Mann hitting number one with the Bruce Springsteen song.

    from www.billboard.com

On Friday February 18, 2005 THIS DAY IN MUSIC

1977 - No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: "Blinded by the Light," Manfred Mann's Earth Band. The song is written by Bruce Springsteen and first appears on the New Jersey rocker's album "Greetings from Asbury Park."

  12. Five Bruce Springsteen songs that everybody should be able to name:

    1. BLINDED BY THE LIGHT

On Bruce Springsteen's debut album "Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J." in 1973. Also released as a single by Manfred Mann in 1976 reaches number 1 on the charts in 1977. Remember this is the song where most people sing the chorus wrong.

    The chorus went:

And she was blinded by the light

Cut loose like a deuce another runner in the night

    Blinded by the light

She got down but she never got tight, but she'll make it alright

    2. THUNDER ROAD

    3. BORN TO RUN

Both songs appear on Bruce Springteen's third album "Born To Run" in 1975. If you don't know these songs or this album go out and get it now, it will change your life forever.

    4. BECAUSE THE NIGHT

The song written in 1977(or 1978) with Patti Smith does not appear on a Bruce Springsteen album until his live effort of 1986 "Live 1975-1985." Smith's version of the song went on to hit #5 in the UK and #13 in the US in 1978.

    5. BORN IN THE U.S.A.

Title track from the album of the same name released in 1984. You all know it.

This isn't a list of my top 5 favorite Bruce Springsteen songs (Only "Thunder Road" would make that list) these are just the songs I'm assuming that if you haven't been living under a rock and have been walking around the free world over the last couple of decades you must have come across these songs at some point somewhere.

Honestly if you don't have one or all of the 6 albums by Springsteen leading up to "Born in the U.S.A." you have no idea what you're missing.

The same goes if you have never seen the Boss live on stage at least once with the E Street Band.

  13. I can't wait for this album and tour!

    from www.billboard.com

Springsteen Stares Down 'Devils' On New Album

Bruce Springsteen re-teams with producer Brendan O'Brien on his 19th album, "Devils & Dust," which Columbia will release on April 26. The 12-track set follows the format of Springsteen's '90s studio work, in which he eschewed the presence of the full E Street Band and was instead surrounded by a rotating cast of collaborators.

The core band here features only Springsteen on guitar, O'Brien on bass and Steve Jordan (Steely Dan, Keith Richards) on drums. The latter also produced Springsteen's wife Patti Scialfa's 2004 Columbia studio album, "23rd Street Lullaby."

The title cut has been in Springsteen's catalog for several years, and was dusted off in soundchecks for the E Street Band's run on last fall's Vote for Change tour, but never performed at a show.

Two of the tracks -- "Long Time Comin'" and "The Hitter" -- date back at least 10 years and were performed during the tour in support of the 1995 album "The Ghost of Tom Joad."

Like much of the material on that set, the songs are both first-person narratives, using details and fragmented scenes to sketch out a life's story. The first is about a father celebrating the optimism that comes with an awaited child; the second about a street fighter nearing the end of an unenviable career.

Springsteen will tour acoustically in support of the new album, but no details have been announced as to who, if anyone, will back him or what size venues he will play.

"I was actually signed as an acoustic act, and I've always enjoyed playing acoustic," the artist told the Associated Press this week. "Even when I was in a band, back in my early days, I was always writing songs that weren't meant for the band."

"Devils & Dust" is the Springsteen's first studio album since 2002's O'Brien-produced "The Rising," which debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 2.09 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The tour in support of the set grossed $221.5 million from 121 shows reported to Billboard Boxscore.

As previously reported, Springsteen won a Grammy on Sunday for best solo rock vocal performance for the "Code of Silence," which was released on the 2003 collection "The Essential Bruce Springsteen."

Here is the track list for "Devils & Dust":

    "Devils & Dust"

    "All The Way Home"

    "Reno"

    "Long Time Comin'"

    "Black Cowboys"

    "Maria's Bed"

    "Silver Palomino"

    "Jesus Was an Only Son"

    "Leah"

    "The Hitter"

    "All I'm Thinkin' About"

    "Matamoras Banks"

  14. It's a nice interview with Mark Olson and Gary Louris.

    from www.billboard.com

Edited By Jonathan Cohen. February 16, 2005, 3:35 PM ET

    Jayhawks' Olson, Louris Fly Again

Rock'n'roll reunion tours come in many shapes, whether it's the classic rock band cashing in on decades-old nostalgia, or indie-rock darlings tromping though the clubs trying to recover a spark of their old glory. But expect something different when estranged Jayhawks principals Gary Louris and Mark Olson start their first tour together Friday (Feb. 18) in Ames, Iowa.

"I don't see ourselves as one of the people who 'get the band back together and make some money,'" Louris said. "Mark and I just want to sing together again. There's something about the way we sing that is bigger than the sum of its parts."

As the main songwriters for the Minneapolis-based band, Olson and Louris took the country/rock fusion of the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers and turbo-charged it with a driving rhythm section and beautiful soaring harmonies. But just as the Jayhawks looked like they were ready to break into the mainstream, Olson, fed up with the music business and touring, quit the band in 1995 after 10 years.

The Olson-Louris tour is not a Jayhawks reunion tour per se; bassist Marc Perlman and drummer Tim O'Reagan are not involved. "We might do that at some point, but I would prefer this to be less of a reunion tour," Louris said. "I want the focus to be on Mark and I singing together."

The outing, including a three-night stand at New York's Bowery Ballroom, ends March 12 in Chicago. "The first plan is to do this tour," said Olson. "We've been talking about writing some new material. I would like to sit down and make a record."

The Jayhawks emerged from the mid-'80s Minneapolis club scene, but unlike the punk-inspired rock that propelled the Replacements, Husker Du and Soul Asylum, Olson and Louris' influences went back to Sun Records and artists like Willie Nelson and Gram Parsons.

As the Jayhawks' popularity grew, Olson began to tire of what Louris calls "the dog and pony show" of the record industry. He had also recently married songwriter Victoria Williams and moved to the desert east of Los Angeles.

In October 1995, Olson flew in to work on the next record with Louris in Minneapolis. "I remember him leaving my house on Halloween after we'd been writing," Louris said. "And about five minutes later, he called me and said, 'I gotta come back and talk.' I knew what he was going to say. It was an emotional situation."

Olson went on to make a series of modest acoustic folk records with Williams on his own. And Louris reconvened the Jayhawks without his partner. "We'd agreed at the time that there would be no Jayhawks without Mark," Louris said. "But after the dust settled, we wanted to keep going. Mark had a huge problem with that."

In fact, they didn't speak for six years. "I still had some emotional investment in whatever I'd done with the group," Olson said. "It was just better to separate for a while."

But in 2001, Louris and Olson were asked to write two songs for the Dennis Quaid film "The Rookie." The producers didn't use the songs, but one surfaced on Olson's 2002 album "December's Child" and it ignited a creative spark within them.

"I didn't realize how much I was going to miss him until the last few years, especially onstage," Louris said. "But in the last six or eight months we started talking on a regular basis. We have a bond beyond music."

New Album, Live Releases On moe.'s Agenda

Two years after the release of its last original set, "Wormwood," veteran jam band moe. is planning a return to the studio. "We have a lot of songs ready," drummer Vinnie Amico tells Billboard.com. "We just have to get into the studio. We've been really busy doing a lot of things and we haven't had the time. Hopefully, we'll pop out another album sooner than later."

The drummer expects the band to begin recording in late summer or early fall, with a tentative late 2005/early 2006 street date. With roughly 20 new songs currently in its live repertoire, including "Tale Spin," "Putting the Boy Down," "Wicked Awesome" and "The Pit," Amico believes the band will employ the same unique recording technique used for "Wormwood."

"We multi-track taped a summer tour, brought it into the studio and sort of edited it together," Amico says. "And we did all of the overdubs and all of the studio magic that we needed to do over the top, as well as creating some of the segues between some of the songs. So, there is a live feel throughout." moe. plans on releasing the album via its own Fat Boy label, unless a better deal comes along.

As far as new live material, the fourth installment of moe.'s concert series, "Warts and All," is due out in March. Recorded in 1998 at the Copper Dragon in Carbondale, Ill., the set" features the band at its improvisational height. "It's usually good energy, a good show and not a lot of flubs," says Amico. "It's like a bootleg but a little bit higher [fidelity]."

Also in the works for release in 2005 is a concert DVD release, as moe. will be taping its April 1-2 Denver shows for a tentative fall street date. Beforehand, the act can be seen tomorrow through Friday (Feb. 16-18) guesting as the house band on NBC's "Last Call With Carson Daly."

  17. I just read this on the website? I hope that it is not really him.

for personal reasons i have to pull out of this blue floyd tour.to those of you who have all already bought tickets or were planning to i apologize.i hope to be playing with the guys very soon.regretably marc

  18. now this?

Mission Control posted this on bluefloyd.net:

MARC FORD is a brilliant & mercurial musician. Before booking the upcoming BLUE FLOYD tour, EACH & EVERY member asserted their enthusiasm, optimism, vitality ... and most important: Availability & participation.

MARC has NOT communicated with BLUE FLOYD any conflict in schedule or personal or medical condition that might prevent him from touring in a month. It is pointless to speculate without further first hand evidence and elucidation. I have seen the 'cryptic' post on MARC's site 'apologizing' for his withdrawal (of participation that is).

Had MARC not agreed to do the tour, we would not have spent so much time, energy (& yes - money) to put it together. I think it's a wonderful tour ... and from the robust ticket sales out of the box ... so do you fans.

All we can ask is that you stick with us as we sort out the fact from the fiction, the conjecture from the truth. We are all stronger together than not. MARC is unique & irreplaceable, as are each and every member of the band. We have the luxury of most of a month to get our ducks in a row. BLUE FLOYD has survived its share of tragedy & tribulation ... looking ever forward.

WTF? I'm going to Marc's official website right now.

  19. I had a feeling that this show was going to be good, but that set definitely tells me that it was amazing!

Thanks for the review, it looks like you had a great time.

BTW What an encore! I've always wanted to see Trey Anastasio perform "Peaches En Regalia" with Phish and never got it. It's no surprise that Trey would play it with moe. since I've seen moe. cover Frank Zappa twice (once I saw them do "San Ber'dino" and "Stink Foot").

Then after Zappa you get J.J. Cale? I can't believe the encore!
