  1. Two boll weevils grew up in the south. One went to Hollywood and became an actor. The other stayed behind in the cotton fields and never amounted to much. The second one became known as the lesser of two weevils.

  3. Agreed! Really enjoyed seeing the band at this venue. For the down east folks, I posted an update of this week's shows.
  4. Update: All shows begin @ 10 pm with a $6 cover. All shows also include I See Rowboats, except the show at Elwood's which includes Penny Black's. Because it's a CD release series for Rebekah and her home turf, I imagine she will close and The Spades will be on 2nd, but I'd double check with the venue to make sure.

  13. That's right. Before heading to the east coast and before stopping here The Spades will be doing a show here Hope some folks can make it out. I gotta a feeling this one's gonna rock a little extra. Cover is probably around $5 and start time is around 10 - 10:30. As far as I know, The Spades are the only band on the bill.
  14. Thanks for the thought DEM. Perhaps it's fitting that their next gig is at Cafe Dekcuf (Cafe S.O.L. in legal circles ). Perth, you say....
  15. Also, I'm not entirely convinced that driving with an expired licence sticker automatically renders one's insurance null and void. If it did, I could never see a cop allowing a vehicle to proceed with a warning....ever.
  16. Sorry for the short notice.....just realized this. I believe she is with her band this time around. Nov. 5 - Ottawa (Zaphods) Nov. 6 - Guelph (Albion) Nov. 7 - Hamilton w/Ohbijou (Casbah) Nov. 8 - Toronto (Tiger Bar) www.myspace.com/rebekahhiggs
  17. I understand what people are saying regarding one accepting responsibility for one's actions. Believe me that's a message I've preached, personally and professionally, for many years. It's just that the amount of the fine struck me as being excessive compared to what happens in Ontario.....but maybe as Davey boy says it's Ontario that's out of whack!
  18. I understand what you're saying StnMtn, but the range of discretionary power (a few days vs. $430) seems to be rather wide here. Am I wrong or is the fine for the same offence in Ontario like less than a third of that.
  19. Was talking to James yesterday. On Saturday, he and the band (Spades) were returning from a series of shows in Quebec when they got pulled over by the cops about 10 mins. from the Ontario border. The reason given was that the sticker on their licence plate was 2 days out of date. They explained that they had been working in Quebec, but would have it taken care of as soon as they got home. No deal. They were given a $430.00 fine. Just doesn't seem right to me. Is that reasonable grounds for being pulled over in Quebec? Is that a reasonable fine for such an infraction? Any suggestions about what they should do?
  20. yeah earth shakin' news indeed..... but something's going on tho I've seen more suspension notices slapped on the front doors of establishments in my area (Kingston/Westport/Smiths Falls) in the past couple of months than I've seen in years. Either the law has changed or the enforcement level has been cranked way up and no one told the managers...or they did and they ignored it.
  21. Having said what I did I also wanted to say that my thoughts and concern are with CJ and all the kids and teachers who are going through this. No question, it's a most difficult thing. Hope it's behind you soon.
  22. Part of the problem is when we respond the same whether we think it's a hoax or we think it's for real. Having been in the position as a school principal, I agree with bradm that the first sign it's probably a hoax is the fact that there is a phone call at all and I also agreed with velvet that the less attention given the phone call the less likely it is to be repeated. The problem was that Parent Councils and Teachers' Unions made it clearly known that they did not want administrators making the call - hoax or real - they wanted a response in ALL instances. What we did at the time (grant it we were dealing with bomb scares rather gun scares) was to develop with the local police two repsonses - one to be used in a case of a perceived real danger and a much less intrusive one to be used in case of a suspected hoax. We explained both procedures to our teachers and parents who were, for the most part, fine with them. Generating a relatively low level response (at least from the students' perspective) with little or no subsequent media coverge of course led to fewer and fewer and eventually no calls.
  23. I thought we were supposed to be getting a Heritage Day?
