Martin responds.
I'm very sorry to the Horseshoe Tavern, the Rheostatics, Tim Mech, Steve Clarkson, Shauna de Cartier, and especially our fans for what Vesely called a "shit-storm of inconvenience". I really wanted to do it and did not foresee this, otherwise I would not have said yes. I regret it very much. All I can say is that I simply could not do it. It's not a decision I took lightly. I have played through many an ailment over the years: whooping cough, many flus and colds, complete exhaustion and finally, at the Rheostatics final show at Massey Hall, my first case of laryngitis (contracted from an opera singer... no joke). This is more difficult to deal with than any physical problem I've ever had. "Stage fright" is a light and simplistic term for my psychological blight but it'll have to do as it's been my personal concern to varying degrees since the first time I ever played in front of anyone else. I don't show it on stage because that is not where it happens -- it's the days and weeks leading up to a performance that are physically and emotionally brutal for me. Why it happened so bad this time is partly because I retired from playing live after a series of Nick Buzz performances almost two years ago and it seems as though the less I play the worse it gets. I'm not interested in talking about this publicly, but those kind people who showed concern and those who are miffed deserve more explanation. Also, there are rumours that it's due to alcohol addiction and though I've certainly had some periods of prodigious exaggeration in this and other regards this has not been the case for a long while. This whole situation aside, I haven't been happier in a long time. I live outside of Hamilton under the Niagara Escarpment where I pursue my first interests which are "nature" and painting. I also record a lot, having done the soundtrack to the documentary "Payback" and just finished an album with my group Nick Buzz. I love music and I love performing it but the public aspect of it has always felt disorienting to me. I hope to one day find my way back on to the stage, but for the time being, it just seems impossible. I am very sorry to all of those who bought concert tickets and/or airline tickets.

I have to mention that the 2012 dates are a quartet (Danny, me, and a rhythm section) and the Whitehorse dates will likely be just a duo. Though there is the chance that the Ontario dates will include the rhythm section but I can't confirm that at this time.
-
Yes I meant to come over here and post about all the new announcements. Release date for Come Cry With Me as well as tourdates with Whitehorse next year.

This show was unbelievable. Anybody on the fence about tonight in Kitchener (are there even still tickets), you shouldn't hesitate to go. It was so unbelievably heavy and psychedelic and way exceeded my expectations.
-
I think the agent was looking for one on this round of dates but nothing firmed up for whatever reason. It's a fickle town, I tell ya. We'll keep trying though.
and p.s. yes Brad, I'm sure he'd be fine with it.

Hi folks, a few dates coming up around these parts. Daniel's new record "Come Cry With Me" will be out in January on Normaltown Records, a new imprint of New West Records (Drive By Truckers, Steve Earle, Corb Lund, John Hiatt, etc). I played steel on the record and in the band. We just completed a US tour opening for and backing Wanda Jackson.
Heres a tune from the upcoming record: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PYRExYcp_E

Fri Nov 23 London / Nite Owl
Sat Nov 24 Sudbury / St. Andrews Chapel
Sun Nov 25 Hamilton / The Casbah

It was just Randy talking endlessly about some dinner he had with Rod Stewart in 1967, all while strumming annoying chords on his acoustic guitar.
^ bwahahahaha
I'm in tonight on the floor as well! Can't wait to see the Horse, first time since Greendale tour for me. Sadies will kill I'm sure, stoked for Lobos as well. Fairly certain it's gonna sound cavernous and shitty but I don't care!
-
Danforth is 1400 with GA floor.
Well that changes everything, doesn't it?
If I was the band I'd be upset at the reduced cap, given that the show is sold out! I'm sure they're taking their same guarantee but there was obviously potential for a good deal of overage on this show. I bet they would have sold out or come close at Danforth with the walk-up crowd.
-
Wow, I'm blown away. I'm pretty sure the cap at the Opera House is near 800 and I thought I heard that the revamped Danforth was around 650. So in fact, they've done better than they expected which is great news.
Not that I didn't expect it to sell well, but any promoter who has done this scene knows that these shows tend to have great walk-up vs. advance sales. Maybe they should move it to the Phoenix and then we can all get in!
-
No comprende. Did this show sell out??
-
Holy shit, I went to this show in the end and it blew my MIND

Dan is a fine dude, we've played together once or twice. Killer guitar player. Wide breadth of taste (also a huge Zakk Wylde fan). Seems to me that he's having a positive influence on the kid, musically and personally.
-
Lemme put it this way...in 2008 I licensed an album cover image that was good until then end of 2009. That's how long I've been planning to do it. Just been a busy sideman. Maybe this winter will be the time to finish it up.

See Deeps? Dreams come true sometimes.

Opened for them in Vancouver at the beginning of this same tour. Went into it fully expecting to roll my eyes at their entire show, or possibly just catch a few tunes and then roll out. It ended up being an unbelievable show. Couldn't believe how good they were, their playing was amazing, the drummer is unbelievable, and they just genuinely put on a great don't-think-too-hard-about-it rock and roll show for the people. And how about this, there were four bottles of champagne in our dressing room after our set, with a little note thanking us for playing. Nice guys, class act, good rock show. Happy some of you folks enjoyed it.
-
Steve, you might be the only person on Earth hoping for such a reunion (other than I)(and maybe the rest of the band?). But hey, you never know.
-
See ya there, Friday night main stage 6:15pm I'll be playing with my old pal Dan Griffin.
-
Just home from the airport. Red Rocks is an amazing place. This is what happened during our set. We all agreed afterwards that we kinda almost cried.
-
Jeff that article is crazy. This whole situation is such a bummer. What a shame a guy had to die because they tried to preserve the enormity of the light and video show. If the "extra" stuff hadn't been hung, would it really have mattered?
-
Indeed she is. She ruled last night in Guelph. I made it to the gig! However I am still super fucked on the jetlag front. So tonight's gig should be pretty wild! :dazed:
-
Stoked to be making my Molson Amp debut. We've got a couple US gigs with Avett Bros in the summertime, stoked to finally check those guys out. Greetings from beautiful Sydney, Australia!
-
The legendary bassist died in his sleep in Tokyo last night after a gig.
-
What a shame. RIP.

Dan recently released a record called Leave Your Love, and when he decided he wanted to get the old band back together to support it, I knew I had to find a hole in my schedule to do these dates with him. We found it, so in between two hectic City and Colour tours we'll do this little run:
Tues May 22 - Guelph @ Ebar
Wed May 23 - Hamilton @ Casbah
Thurs May 24 - London @ APK Live
Fri May 25 - Ottawa @ Maverick's
Sat May 26 - Kingston @ Mansion
Tues May 29 - Waterloo @ Starlight
Thurs July 12 - Toronto @ Dakota
I won't be at the Starlight date because I'll already be back on the road. And I'm 50/50 on the Guelph as I'll be fresh off a plane from Australia. But gonna try. More details at dangriffin.ca. Hope to see you at the shows!

If you're there on a Monday you MUST go to Third and Lindsley (that's the name of the bar, and also the corner it's on). It's not on Broadway but it's not a far cab ride. The band is called the Time Jumpers. Cover is 15 dollars. It's a Western Swing orchestra. Paul Franklin is the steel player (played with Dire Straits and generally deemed to be the world's top steel player). Vince Gill is one of the vocalists. YOU WILL THANK ME!
Otherwise, most of those joints on Broadway are fun for a bit but you'll find yourself growing wearing of the shitty New Country vibe. Make a point of going to Robert's Western World, where you're most likely to see something cool and old-school style. Right across the road is Ernest Tubb's records, you should check that out for sure. The Ryman is right around the corner and Gruhn's is right there too.
Also Bahamas is on the Calexico tour, so that show will be extra good, I'd probably check that out if I was in town.
Have fun, it's a great town! And be prepared to cab everywhere!
EDIT This is from a Time Jumpers gig I was at: http://youtu.be/dAHfcqzhag0
