  1. guitar

and per larry_llama, drum stool #2

EDIT: Has anybody expressed concrete interest in playing bass? I was under the impression somebody had. If that's not the case, I'll gladly play bass. Otherwise I'm sure there's room for me as another guitar player.

hey aaron, a guy named snail who dr evil and i have known since high school had originally spoken up as the bass guy...he just got a new bass after a great deal of getting the runaround from steve's he scored it next day from long and mcquades.

paging snail, please pick up the white courtesy phone...

sides which there's lots of room for guitar players, particularly multi instrumental ones :)

  2. wow paisley...that was great! i have a new e-mail signature thanks to that speech...

Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

    -Steve Jobs

he's a pretty bright guy for a high school dropout :)

  3. I'd probably do it all over again...I mean, you would too if you had seen the bikini that my friend had packed for Florida...

i knew you had a good reason for putting yourself through all that :) and if we are talking about kookycanooky, then you did technically ask him first, and further to the point, you're already a band :)

so it looks like the 2 things to come out of this thread (three if you count chuck's cautionary tale about border crossing) are

a possible road trip to levon's farm, and

lots of interest in The Cover Band.

so sound off if you want to claim a chair!

i'll start - i put dibs on a drum stool. hopefully it's behind a kit. next?

  4. if we do decide a summer road trip (and I'm pretty sure this is gonna happen --how can we give this a miss and live with ourselves?), what happens Esau to the folks (and their car) who were trying to get you across the border. If it just means a long walk back for you, Dave and I can probably find space for you in our car.

Tim, let's seriously start looking at dates!

deb, ask chuck about his adventures in inadvertent people smuggleng...had his car confiscated and had to pay many $$$$ in fines to get it back.

the lesson is make sure that you ask all passengers heading stateside whether or not they have ever been refused entry...i think the question never came up with chuck's friend, in the eyes of US Customs chuck was assisting the illegal entry of a person into the US. and this was pre 911 to boot, they'll probably shoot you now :)

  5. Yeah,I realized it was 100USD a person, just wasn't sure which Woodstock you were refering to.I figured NY with it being in US funds, but was really hoping for ON.Oh well...I still may attempt a crossing this year, got a few folks I'm looking to hook up with I haven't seen since my last GD tour (93) that can't enter Canada..birds of a feather I guess... 00000001.gif

heheheee...i'm not particularly inclined to enter the US, but this might just be enogh motivation :)

  6. it's steep ($100 US per)

con - it's outside of Woodstock' date=' so it's a long trip from the toronto area, but if levon's in trouble i'd happily give him $100 in exchange for being entertained all afternoon & evening :)[/quote']

Question for ya,is it in the US? I know you say its outside Woodstock, but with the 100 USD ticket price (which I would pay no problem) I'm sorta confused.

sorry...the tickets are $100 US dollarydoos per, and it is Woodstock NY (sadly nott Woodstock Ontario, otherwise i'd be there now :) ) check http://www.levonhelm.com for more details.

  7. Bob Snider is great!

My fave is How To Build A Fence.

Apparently he was discovered busking by Bob Wiseman, who took him to the studio and produced his first record.

    what he said.

how to build a fence is hilarious in a very understated way. if bob comes within range of you, go.

seriously. log out, get up & go. :)

  8. Thanks for posting the link, Greg.

It still surprises me that a band and organization that was dysfunctional in so many ways managed to create and perform such great songs for so many years.

    Peace, Mark

what he said. nearly 40 years is a pretty good run, and unless they're willing to set themselves up like sons of the pioneers or something & be prepared to recycle members, egos are only going to kill the thing.

  9. i know that the good rev probably has half the band already' date=' i'm imagining a couple guitars, keys, bass, and two drummers, sort of like the lineup they toured in the 90's. snail, you have your bass by now, you still in?[/quote']

Well let's just say I could handle any of the guitar, bass, and drums myself...though not all at once :D.

Seriously though, I have one drummer who is committed, to the point that since I mentioned this Cover Band to him, he's asked me about it at least once a week. I would be equally happy either playing guitar or bass. We have a piano/keyboard player who will be making his home in Hamilton as of September, haven't mentioned anything to him yet but I can assure you he would be down to take care of either Richard's or Garth's parts. Myself and the drummer both sing. Tim, what do you play? I don't remember. Do I recall correctly that Dr. Evil Mouse is involved as well, presumably on guitar? Dude, I'm ready to get this show on the road tomorrow.

Anyway, let me know exactly what role(s) you'd like me/us to play, and let's go from there.

hey rev! i'm a drummer with a limited singing range who can also play guitar and a tiny bit of keys...so i think we have a coulple guitars, possible keys, a couple drummers and at least one bassist...woo hoo!

  10. people to play :) i've been listening to a lot of live Band lately and it has totally stoked my desire to play their music...the number of people that claim them as influences, and the complexity of their songwriting totally amaze me.

so this idea of a cover band called the Cover Band keeps bubbling under. i'd like to try to make something happen in the fall. no committments to 20 gigs a year, but if it works it'd be a fun thing to have going in whatever state it happens in. i know that the good rev probably has half the band already, i'm imagining a couple guitars, keys, bass, and two drummers, sort of like the lineup they toured in the 90's. snail, you have your bass by now, you still in?

on a side note, levon helm is in finincial trouble and is doing shows at his barn every couple weeks. it's steep ($100 US per) but it's him, dr john, hubert sumlin, and lots of very cool others. anyone want to go?

pro- bbq beforehand, hang out with the band and a bunch of band freaks, see a show, not sure about camping right there but i'm sure it's around.

con - it's outside of Woodstock, so it's a long trip from the toronto area, but if levon's in trouble i'd happily give him $100 in exchange for being entertained all afternoon & evening :)

  11. The lineup may in fact suck, but what I'm not sure about is whether the amount of publicity surrounding the concert will have any negligible effect in or on developing countries. I understand that these shows are to raise awareness of "Africa's Plight" but even that objective seems so close-minded and ignorant of the realities in these countries that are apparently so in need of us.

I'm highly skeptical that this Live 8 stuff will do anything at all, other than put government communications staff into high gear, announcing all sorts of aid packages that were already budgeted for (CIDA does it all the time).

if anything, they will finally release hard numbers and explain what exactly is being done. without looking at the underlying reasons for debt, things will never change.

how about end of Structural Adjustments-Stock? or Actual Fair Globalization-Stock....and just for the record, i'm bashing the premise, not the lineup :)

  12. and further to that, call guelph lake about overflow camping. the reserved spots are probably sold out, but we got a last minute overflow spot one year that was just fine, and far away from other folks who might be annoyed by a crazy party :)

edit to add: just made 400 posts!!!!!

  13. I hope he treated the "Beckbacon" to his swanky rendition of the Pink Panther theme. ;)

beckbacon....bwaahaahaaa! that's brilliant! keri, glad you & becky had a good time. for the longest time "don't worry be happy" made me cringe. i caught a bobby mcferrin show on tv last winter and it was awesome. classical music, crazy solo bebop, and blackbird. what a talented guy!

  14. OK so now for the good news. L&M phoned tonight. They have the bass in !!! It was ordered yesterday !!! An extra 1000 points to L&M. I think before I go and pick it up I'll take a side trip to Steve's and demand my money back. TomFoolery and you others have made good points and I really don't want to let Steve's have any of my money. I'll take Amanda with me she's much better a causing a disruption then I am.

Tim's idea with all the songs on there banned list could come in handy too. We could all get really drunk play them obnoxiously out of tune.

is there any other way? :) good news, when are we gonna get together and jam with your new bass??

  15. Sorry to hear about the saga, of course, Snail; I'd caught wind of it last week. Steve's blows; that's about all there is to it. Biggest draw of the 'burbs, and all. It's gonna make them stupid, over-busy, and arrogant. I know you know all that, but I thought I'd just get it out there. We'll have to have a "Get Snail Back His Refund Money" party before long.

i say we stage a protest. as many guitars and basses as we can get, we all set up in front of steve's on a busy saturday & play The Forbidden Music from their list (staitway to heaven, smoke on the water etc) over and over again until they agree to give you your $$ back :)
