  1. Alex Jones is having a field day with this whole thing.. obviously calling it a hoax.

I don't know about a hoax. I suspect he's dead, but I wouldn't be surprised if Bin Laden hadn't died a while back, perhaps when the first rumors started circulating about him having a heart attack or whatever it was, and now the USA is spinning it as if they got him in a firefight. This gives the US Gov't a perfect window to pull troops out of the never-ending mess in the mid-east in seemingly good conscience and standing with it's citizens.

    I can see it now...

"Mission accomplished! Bin Laden is dead, now it's time to bring your sons and daughters home"

    Re-election locked.

  2. 'Carnivale' was excellent, even though HBO cut it after two seasons - it pretty much gets going midway into the 2nd season but unfortunately, it was slated for 6 seasons so it ends abruptly and unfinished. More frustrating then Deadwood in my opinion. Still, an excellent show.

  3. Woo-hoo sweet Emmylou!

    Tickets on sale saturday morning.

Emmylou, Lamontagne and Gord Downie, too

    Ray Lamontagne coming to...

Alt-country queen Emmylou Harris, Grammy-winning roots rocker Ray Lamontagne and Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip are among the acts being assembled by superstar producer Daniel Lanois for a music festival Saturday, Aug. 27 at Christie Lake Conservation Area.

Billed as the Harvest Picnic, the daylong festival will also feature performances by critically acclaimed American alt-rocker Rocco DeLuca, Canadian singer-songwriter Serena Pryne and Lanois himself.

Jean Paul Gauthier, whose September Seventh Entertainment Ltd. is co-promoting the Harvest Picnic with the Hamilton Conservation Authority, said Wednesday he was still signing more acts for the show and would make further announcements closer to the event.

Tickets are $59.50 (plus applicable service fees) and go on sale Saturday at 11 a.m. through Ticketmaster (ticketmaster.ca or 1-855-872-5000) or at Picks and Sticks Music (140 Locke St. S.)

As well as music, the Harvest Picnic will feature a farmers’ market, horticultural workshops, art vendors, fishing, swimming and food and beverage areas. Gauthier said the fishing area would be specially stocked with trout for the event.

Lanois, who was raised in Ancaster before founding Hamilton’s Grant Avenue recording studio, said that he hopes the Harvest Picnic will become an annual event.

“I am pleased to announce that my longtime friend Gord Downie will be performing,†said Lanois, who played a key role in programming the event with Gauthier. “Ray Lamontagne and Emmylou Harris have also kindly agreed to travel north of the border to participate in our celebration of quality Canadian fine foods.

“This is our first year with this celebration. Let’s make it a success and an event that we should definitely revisit annually.â€

Lanois, who has worked with international stars such as U2, Bob Dylan and Peter Gabriel, produced Emmylou Harris’s 1995 Grammy-winning album Wrecking Ball.

Harris, one of the most respected singers in country music over the last 40 years, released her latest album Tuesday to rave reviews. Although the 64-year-old singer was born in Alabama, she has developed considerable musical ties to this area.

Her new CD, Hard Bargain, is named after a song by Ron Sexsmith, a St. Catharines native. Harris is also one of several guest singers on Blackie and the Rodeo Kings’ upcoming CD, Kings and Queens. Colin Linden, a member of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, is Harris’s guitarist and band leader.

Lamontagne, a 37-year-old New Hampshire native, has become a star in the American roots movement in recent years. His latest CD, God Willin’ and the Creek Don’t Rise, won a Grammy for best contemporary folk album. The track Beg Steal or Borrow was also nominated in the prestigious song of the year category.

Gauthier said the conservation area could comfortably hold some 12,000 for the concert.

“We want people to have enough room for a blanket, cooler and their lawn chairs,†said Gauthier, who grew up fishing at Christie Lake, “as well as to be able to find some quiet space if they’d like to chill out. I want this to be a good, old-fashioned picnic.â€

The 830-acre (336-hectare) Christie Lake conservation area, located on Highway 5 just west of the Flamboro Downs racetrack, contains 10 kilometres of trails, a wildlife management area, a 360-metre sandy beach and picnic areas.

  4. I can see that considering Boston/Montreal have met the most times overall in the NHL playoffs - 32 times, with the Habs leading 23 games to Boston's 9.

The closest pairing under them has been Detroit/Leafs - meeting 23 times. Leafs 12 - Det. 11

    3rd would be Montreal/Chicago - meeting 17 times. Mtl 12 - Chi 5

  5. Well, if the B's keep playing like they did last night I imagine you'll have your win, although I wouldn't count on an 8-0 (lol). I'm fearing a one goal game.

Some interesting stats about these teams and the playoffs:

    • Of the 21 series in which the Bruins took a 3-2 lead following game 5, this is the 12th in which they have been extended to seven games and they are 7-4 in their previous 11.
    • The Bruins have a lifetime record of 9-10 in game 7s while the Canadiens enter tonight's game with a 13-8 record overall in 7th games.
    • Tonight's game is the 8th game 7 between MTL and BOS in their histories with Montreal holding a 5-2 advantage over Boston in previous contests.

    :nhl:

  6. Maybe so, maybe so....but Montreal did get three penalties in a row after they scored the go ahead goal in the second.

If, God willing, the Habs go on to win the game tonight, the Bruins won't have to look much further than their power play for what went wrong.

Power play failure for the B's this entire series has been killin em (imo), as well the Habs ability to capitalize on their stupid mistakes (give aways, penalties etc) hasn't helped them either. Add to that some awesome goal tending from Price.

Been a great series if you ask me, although game five by far was the best all around, both teams looked great. A great example of why they (Bruins/Habs) are the best rivalry and match up in the NHL.

Should be a tense one tonight.

  8. Although yeah, I hear you Esau on where the moneys actually flowin'. It sucks, and I know the only real way to affect change is to boycott entirely but the music is a powerful drug.

Understandable. I certainly wouldn't criticize or condemn anyone for wanting to go, or going. I just made my mind up I wouldn't be part of it anymore, especially since I complain and bitch about prices - it stings sometimes though, especially when his Bobness comes around.

Regardless, I hope everyone enjoys the show.

  9. I already posted this on my facebook in reply to Booche, but I'll post it here as well.

Boston played rather sloppy and paid for it, Habs capitalized on those mistakes. Regardless, I thought it was a good game.

. God bless Price in that 2nd period though, that was money. He totally deserved the first star for that period alone but credit to Jack Martin once again.

Agreed, I had Price pegged for first star based on the second period alone. He played a great game.

  10. I know Massey is solo and I can see asking more for such an intimate show, but I won't be paying those prices. Although, I wouldn't pay that much for anyone now-a-days considering where the bulk of the ticket price actually goes.

A quick look through my stubs I found these:

Aug.18 1993 CNE GA - Neil Young, Pearl Jam, Blues Traveler, Sound Garden - $38

    Oct. 31 1996 Copps 3rd row center - Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse - $48

I have a few others from the late 80's and late 90s but I can't find em at the moment.

  13. NRPS facebook status earlier today said "RIP Neil Young". They were wrong, obviously and have since removed the post.

Sorry for any strife caused by my post about Neil Young-I don't know whether you learned it from that post or another source, but regardless, it was an honest mistake. A friend heard it on a NY Rock radio station (I don't know which one) and e-mailed it. They were obviously mistaken....Apologies for any part I took...it was inadvertent.

Apparently it was Manchester's soccer legend Neil Young, although I couldn't find any info online.

  14. '>Issue number 1

The court heard that doctors across Canada have effectively boycotted Health Canada's medical marijuana program. The doctors have been refusing to grant the licences because they say they haven't been given enough training about how to prescribe the drug. They also say the government has failed to fund sufficient clinical trials of the drug.

Exactly why my doctor(s) in 1997 refused to ok my medicinal during my first cancer treatments. Only the my doctor at the Juravinski cancer centre here in Hamilton was willing to get involved, even though at the time the laws were even more muddy then they are now. My current doc also claims that *if* he were to sign off on me for approval he'd open the doors to harassment and scrutiny from both other doctors and the police. Exactly how true that is I can't say, but according him the process of prescribing or just giving his approval can cause enough issues that he isn't comfortable getting involved, for the most part for the reasons I quoted above. He's not against medicinal marijuana, just the bullshit that comes with getting involved.

In my opinion, legalization shouldn't be the topic just right now, our gov't needs to stop dragging their heels on the medicinal issue and come to a final, solid decision - is it allowed or not? - plain and simple. By that I mean, if your going to issue permits for it, then stop busting/raiding the clinics that try and create a safe, clean and controlled environment for patients to obtain their medicine and provide doctors with the necessary education, literature and training not to mention clear laws, they require AND have been asking for all along. As well, start educating the authorities on this issue. I know two people with permits that have been busted and harassed on a few occasions for growing in their backyard (the legal number of plants) only to have the plants destroyed and then be released without charges and without as much as an apology after the police did some homework and found out they were within their legal rights to possess, grow and smoke.

Personally, I'm not concerned about getting a permit now-a-days. For the most part my needs just aren't the same anymore so I've given up trying and hell, I'll grow and smoke regardless.

    [color:red]

    [edit to add]

Our gov't also needs to be educated that remission doesn't mean cured.

  15. A video featuring Conservative Leader Stephen Harper performing Imagine by John Lennon has been removed from YouTube for copyright reasons.

As of Wednesday morning, the video had been taken down and replaced with the message that said: "This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Lenono Music."

Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, owns the rights to Imagine through Lenono Music.

Harper performed the song during a campaign stop at the home of Winnipeg’s Maria Aragon during the first week of the campaign.

Aragon, 10, attracted worldwide attention when she uploaded a video of herself singing and playing Lady Gaga’s hit Born This Way. She later performed the song with Lady Gaga at a Toronto concert.

Aragon also sang the song for Harper and his wife, Laureen, when the couple made a campaign stop at her family’s home March 29. She and Harper then performed Imagine.

Thousands of other covers of the song, including a rendition by former U.S. president Bill Clinton, remain on YouTube.
