  1. What can I say that Booche hasn't already?

A simply amazing performance from both bands, worthy of a raging tripping crowd. The light turnout was very disappointing, these guys deserve to get paid properly for kicking our asses so hard. I truly believe that turnouts like last night are the growing pains in the process of creating the solid scene that can exist. Deepest respect to both bands for throwing down so hard and having so much fun despite the less than impressive turnout. They took it for the team last night, and although there were not a lot of people out to see it, I KNOW the recordings will become legendary and heard by everyone.

Downtime.... My first time hearing them with Jeff... holy shit! I can't say enough good things about these guys... Is it just me or were both Downtime sets completely uninterrupted? I don't think they stopped once!... The Scofield and MMW covers were insane and very much Downtime renditions..

DOY.... My second ever DOY show and this morning I am finding that there tunes have become stuck in my head... They have some of the best original songs I have heard.... fucking catchy man... ya know how you can get the melody stuck in your head but you don't really know the word but you need to sing because if you don't your head might explode? That is were I'm at right now. I can't wait to get a recording of the second set to try and figure out what some of those songs are called. It warmed my heart to listen to DOY talking about the show afterwards, they were so pumped, so excited...pure enthusiasm.

This was the first time DOY or Downtime had played a set blender show and it was the first time either band had heard each other, yet they blended beautifully. They pulled off the transitions like well rehearsed boy bands. Perfect guys....A testament to the talent on stage...and a real treat to watch... just wait until you hear this!!

Toaster - Honerable mentions to Jaybone for trying so hard yet coming up just short and to Adam for being so fucked up he didn't even care there was no one in his club. Last nights winner... hands down.... his second toaster award (the only one with 2).... Indika

  2. I haven't stopped dancing since Tuesday....

Tonight should keep me dancing for another few weeks....

From the sounds of the Downtime Kingston show.... we are in for a real treat!

I have a feeling tonight is going to be a very special show.... wish I wasn't so burnt so I could get really high...

Hope to see everyone out... 10 pm sharp!

  3. Oh wow... what a day....

I'm still trying to reflect on what I experienced on Tuesday.... I'm finding it hard to get my head around it all. Possibly as a result of the chemical cocktail I ingested, but more because of the sheer volume of magical moments both on stage and off. Seems everytime I think about it, I remember some other glorious detail of a day that will live on in my brain for ever.

The music was stellar, but for me, what made Tuesday so special was the people I shared it with. Although the attendance at the Amphitheatre left a lot to be desired, it worked out perfect for all of us. With friends scattered over many section, the light attendance allowed us to stub everyone into the same section and party down together, the good vibes and love served to enhance the music much more than any pill.

MOE... rocked! That dude who wrote the Globe and Mail article must have had his head firmly planted up his ass to have wrote..."MOE. seemed to lack a sound that was truly its own" Gimme a break... were you even there, putz. When Warren Haynes came out to jam with MOE it was IMO the best jam of the day.

My first Phil experience was a great one. Yeah, I talked a lot of trash about Phil... "wuss rock" etc..... It was really just to mess with all you deadheads, and now... I am a believer! If I had my way, I would have made Darrien last night and then the one after that, and the one after that.. etc...

All to soon the show ended....Thank god for nero, because I had many hours of buzz left to kill, I couldn't think of a better way to end the night. I have been to 100's of nero shows, and I can say, without a doubt in my mind, that Tuesday night was the BEST nero show EVER!!!! Bar none! I have never heard nero play like that before! They played from the moment I waked into the club (11pm ish) until close... no breaks... I barely even recognized some of the songs... strange new territory was explored and everyone got off hard!! Especially nero... have you ever seen a sober permagrin like Lauzon had on? Have you ever heard Jay slap the skins like that? Has Shane quit bouncing yet?

Thanks to so many for so much.. specifically, Jaybone for the ride and Sloth for being Sloth....

As I drove home, I couldn't help but feel a little depressed. A one day dose of tour life was enough to make me remember what a glorious existence I had just 2 years ago when touring was my life. Something about that environment and lifestyle fills my soul like nothing else on the planet. It had been a long time since I felt that, and it may be a long time before I can again... bittersweet as always

  4. Don't doubt yourself H... I believe there were only 2 sax players at the Xmas bash. It was the Bayou show a few months later where the third showed up. I hope this show is closer to the xmas bash than the Bayou show.... that Bayou show was kinda weak.

Might the illustrious H be coming to Ottawa for that or any other shows? Where were you on Cananda day baby? I was saving you a seat.

    CRUZAO w/ Homestyle

    Friday July 26

    Babylon Night Club

    317 Bank St.

    CRUZAO

Winner of the coveted 2001 Montreal Jazz Festival's "Grand Prix du Jazz" Award

Winner of the 2001 CBC Galaxie "Rising Star" Award

1st Runner-up at the National Jazz Awards for "Electric Jazz Group Of The Year"

Nick Ali - winner of the National Jazz Award for "Jazz Composer Of The Year"

Led by young Trinidadian born, New York trained trumpet player Nick "The Brownman" Ali, who himself has just under 100 CD recording credits as a side man to his name, this hard hitting latin-jazz unit funkifies it's audiences with Brownman's original latin-funk compositions and high-energy virtuositic jazz soloists. The amalgamation of authentic latin rhythm, jazz harmony and modern funk groove, this group began it's career as a musical experiment for Brownman in the tonal qualities of latin music composed in a chordless setting (no piano, no guitar). Since the late '50s jazz musicians have richly explored this unique musical texture creating a 5 decade chordless jazz tradition, however this texture had never been explored in Latin America, due to the dominance and omni-presence of the piano "montuno" or equivalent guitar structures.

The result of this musical experiment - Nick Ali & CRUZAO - the first chordless latin-jazz-funk unit in history -

CRUZAO is modeled in that jazz tradition of 'the chordless quintet' and takes the same approach in a latin-jazz context.

Featuring the Ali Brothers - Nick "The Brownman" and Marcus Ali - and dedicated to the amalgamation of latin rhythm, jazz harmony and funk groove, . explores the inner workings of these artforms through Brownman's original compositions, intense *improvisation-interaction and raw energy.

  8. Puddles Puddles Puddles

    You are one messy SOB....

Friday night was not the first time you stumbled into Babylon in an incoherent fog. In fact, every show I have seen you at, your a mumbling mess. The owners of the clubs always worry and ask me about you. I usually tell them your harmless and not to worry about it... ..I was wrong.

I love this crew of people for their ability to party hard, yet still maintain some semblance of self-control and NEVER, EVER cause a problem in ANY venue we frequent.

"If I see that f*ckhead meaty beaty bouncer again Im gonna punch him in the face"

The bouncers name is Ian, and he is one of the nicest guys around. You are lucky it was this meathead that escorted your ass out. He showed tremendous self-restraint in the face of blinding idiocy. I heard the trash you talked to him, and I would have smoked you for it. You got banned for the way you behaved when you were asked to leave, not for being a consistently fucked up mess.

"I was at a booth and kept knodding off and sleepin'"

We watched you for over half an hour. You didn't move a muscle. There isn't a bar in the world that will let you pass out or "sleep" inside. It wasn't until you nearly fell out of the booth and onto the floor that they asked you to leave. How could you even question that decision? You could barely walk when you got up.

Babylon are tremendous supporters of this scene and deserve our love.

It's hard enough dealing with bar owners and rockstars, your bull shit is not appreciated. If you can't stay awake for the whole show... stay home!

  9. Holly crap... how good was Beau?

What a great show! Both of those bands rocked hard, I'm not sure which was better, they were both fantastic!

The Beau Dixon band was basicaly King Cordova with a 3 piece horn section and a whole lotta Beau. I think Beau has one of the best voices around, very soulfull, you can almost tell he was born in Detroit.... His lyrics "I'm back in school but all my friends are rockstars" was something that I could relate to.

The formula consisted of the same horn section, Beau on keys and a different drummer, bass and guitar player. They were equally as tight and daceable. Mike Hopkins is a great guitar player and this band grooved everyone out well past last call.

Try and check out The Formula, Beau Dixon or King Cordrova anywhere you can, you will not be dissappointed.

Nice to see so many Skanks last night. Even Indica made it out!! Thanks to Grum and Indica for the afterparty, and thanks to BradM for helping out at the door.....good fun again boys..

    Highlight of the night

This realy hot hippy girl comes into the club and notices the DOY poster I had on the table, the gushes and tells me how much she loves DOY and that she is thrilled to see they are still playing. "cool" I replied, "no you don't understand, I LOVE DOY" she says.... She preceeds to turn around and bend over, she pulls up her shirt and reveals a very nice tatto on her ass. One of those funky tailbone sun tattoo's but instead of the sun in the middle it was a DOY logo... now that is HARD core! 8 of the 10 DOY posters I had were stolen.... I will take that as a good sign

    Quote of the night

"I'm one happy camper... no wait check that.... I'm one happy non-camper"

    BradM

  10. I think it would be wise to have it be all ages, but I can't confirm that either.

Drunken underage girls are OK in my book

This is gonna be a fun evening

Ferriswheeler will start shortly after 5... I might be in rough shape by then....hahahaha I think some form of chemical assistance will be required

  11. I have a cot in the basement of Babylon..... I haven't left here in weeks...... I will be here for sure.

H baby, I will still be your friend, though I warn you now, I am planning an extra messy Canada day and I might just take you with me.... hahahahahahaha... you got Tuesday off right?
