  1. I fear next Tuesday if that's the case...

of course, I'm still gonna go..... kinda the way you look at a car wreck as you pass, morbid curiosity I suppose.

Muffin just got better, I can't imagine how the "Live Wires" (tuesday @ dekcuf) could get worse....the only way that could get worse is if the took the drink special away.

I think the Muffin bass player, plays extra hard on Thursdays now, just to wash the tueday trash out of his brain (and mine)

The Tuesday's won't last. Come enjoy them while you can. I know I have JSB booke on a Tuesday in August, so the end is near for the Live Wires

    Ole Ole

  2. Raggamuffin was stellar again last night. Every show they have done over the last month has been awesome!

The sax player who sat in the the second set last week played the entire show last night and was introduced as the newest member of the RaggaMuffin band. What a tremendous addition to a band which overflowed already. The sax player was shy last week, but not so much last night. He steped up and filled some great spots and had some great back and forth with POPO. The sax players presence made POPO take a step back, lets hope that as they play together more POPO steps back into the drivers seat.

The bass player was extra sick last night. I can't recall ever hearing him funk out with heavy slapping before. He was as funky mess last night

    good muffin..... as always

  3. I agree, the $15 cover including a CD isa a great idea, especialy for a CD release party.

BradM, I'm sure I can cut you a deal for both CD's. If I had to choose, I would take Beau's. There both pretty good, but neither are stellar, and I think the live shows both bands lay down put their CD's to shame. I guess that is the mark of a good band though.

Booche... I can see blowing off CTMF for Mtl Jazz and Canada day Nero..... but the rough riders? please?... you r more of a loser than I give you credit for [Wink]

  4. Beau Dixon will blow you away!!

Although Beau is not a member of the Formula, he will be performing with them tonight.

I hope to see whoever hasn't left town at the show tonight. Between CTMF, Montreal Jazz and a beautiful cottage weekend it might be tough to draw. Plus the tek Rock thing, and the first football game in a few years.... Beau deserves a big crowd... I hope he gets it.

  5. Well Bush... I'm glad you mentioned that...

    Nugget Productions presents....

    Spacious Couch

    W/ Ferriswheeler

    Saturday September 28

    Cafe Dekcuf

    Ottawa ON

When I first heard their disc I was floored. I still listen to it all the time. They will blow the Cafe away!! I am soooo looking forward to this show!

Still a long way off, just planting the seed....

I'm sure there will be as many Ontario dates as possible for the Couch as they tour through in the fall.

They were good enough to make Bush speak up and stop lurking .... so they must be something... ..

  6. So last night we checked out the Herbie Hancock show at the NAC. The room was packed and damm hot. This was a very different show than the last Herbie show I saw in Montreal a few months back. This was a very traditional Jazz show. Each of the 5 players on stage was insane and laid down some sick shit. I had a good time and IMO the sax player stole the show. This was a short show, under 2 hours. It was done so early that we got to Babylon before the doors even opened, no worries, into the alley for a re-charge.

As we sat in Babylon sipping our beverages, we noticed Roy Hargrove (Herbies trumpet player) walk into the bar.... As I passed him I just smiled and patted him on the back, "Nice show man" was all I could think to say to him. Jaybone and I took a trip outside, by the time I got back into the club, Sloth had already hooked Roy up with party favors and the band was just starting.

NoJazz was awesome!!!! Kinda like tND meets DJ Logic meets Karl Densson..... As they were setting up, Jaybone comes over and states "I think there is gonna be a throw down tonight" and he couldn't have been more right!! These guys kicked ass from the first beat!! Heavily danceable, mad scratched from the DJ, sweet horn section, and this band had a tone of energy, always bouncing, crowding around differentband members as they got sick on us.... very sweet show.

Good night of Jazz, it was a taste of everything, from Herbie's traditional masterpieces to NoJazz's hip-hop Jazz it was like getting dipped at both ends of the Jazz spectrum.

    Highlight of the night

With my eyes closed, and fat beats moving my ass, I smashed into someone, I opened my eyes and it was Roy, he smiled and patted me on the back and we rocked out on the dancefloor together. Fucking cool, not 2 hours before, he was rocking my world, now were just a couple of guys tripping on the floor... sweet.

What a week so far.... Muffin tonight anyone?

  7. "Raggadick" hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I think it starts around 10. Get there early becuase once the bass player from Raggamuffin leaves the stage, it is all down hill.

Attendance was sparse... maybe 20 people. Lots of room on the patio and extra attention from Jody.... there are a few perks

  8. Once again a few of us tried out the reggae night at Dekcuf.... All I can say is that it is a damm good thing drinks are that cheap. cause those bands SUCK!! Sometimes it is almost as much fun to cut up a bad band than listen to a good one, especialy when accompanied by the wit of Hood and Stapes.

How can any self respecting rasta butcher so many Marley songs... troubling.....

Thank god for Hood and Stapes, you guys are much more entertaining that Milly Vanilly Marley.

The best part of the night was listening to the band tear eachother up after their set. I thought there was gonna be a fight on the pourch...

    Lowlight

Guess who's coming to dinner? > Ole Ole

    Made my ears bleed!!!!!!

    Highlight

Our new friend Rasta John teaching us the Jamaican sigh to tell a band they suck...

    @ babylon

oh man..... show season is here!!

  10. funny because its true!!!!!!!!

That might have been the sickest show I have ever seen... no bull shit... no exageration....no words can even begin to do it justice.... i picked the right night to dose... jebus....

4 players, each sicker than the last.... this band awnserd the question... "What if Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis would have recorded that album?"...... I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about last night. No shit, that guitar player was unlike anything else I have ever heard, playing above the nut?...what is that all about?..... The upright bass was amazing and the drummer did a megaphone solo which would put the vacume to shame.

Best vocals I have EVER heard. Midway thru the show, this dude walked out of the crowd and onto the stage... i was afraid that the walls were gonna come tumbling down, fucking vocals... or so I thought. These vocals were not in english or french or any other language I am familiar with, my guess would be arabic. Filled my soul with the most powerfull and emotional souds I have ever heard from a human voice.

I don't think I have ever seen a band that was so good I had to remind myself to breath.... until last night..... if you blew that show off because of the ticket price or a percieved better offer, shame on you... these guys will not be back anytime soon, maybe never... I would drop $20 to see any one of the 4 do a show solo.

Sooooo glad a few of you were there to share that magical night with me.... toasters all around!

  11. I go see a lot of bands I have never heard of before... I have rolled the dice many times and have sufferd the extrems of good (soulive after phish.... who knew?) and the worst of the bad ( a few Mercury shows come to mind). Tonight I roll the dice again, but with the Blue Note affiliation, it feels like rolling heavily weighted dice, and I expect a seven!

    Babylon

Erik Truffaz, the brilliant French trumpeter, whose amalgam of electro-acoustic fusion, combustible dance rhythms and jazz tonalities, is once again doing something new.

Check out his tour dates..... he goes London UK, NY, Ottawa, Toronto...... Istanbul?

    http://www.bluenote.com/artistpage.asp?ArtistID=3662&tab=2

How did we get so lucky to have him play Babylon?

  12. I'm soooooo down with that sound!!

And don't forget the OFFICIAL after party at Babylon with NO JAZZ.

If Prince and Maceo played Oliver's, it is reasonalble to think it is possible for Herbie and friends to hit Babylon...... Can you take the chance of missing that? I sure fucking can't! It IS being marketed as the "official" after party......... OMG...could you imagine?

  13. Last night was a great muffin....

The first set was a marathon.... an hour and a half at least.... POPO was on fire and I think they were having a lot of fun last night. "To the Rescue" the classic first set closer was jammed out forever!!!! They did some cool timing stops.... blended in a few extra funky grooves and blew my mind... then they kept playing.... another 3 or 4 tracks after Rescue... killer first set!

Setbreak was the usual cloudy, stinky mess. Dubes just kept coming, I just kept smoking and eventualy Sloth and I just looked at eachother and shook our heads... soooo high.... I would leave after the first set if I didn't get so damm high at setbreak every week.

Second set was a treat with a sax player sitting in with Bingie and the Muffin... They really jammed a lot last night, even the second set, usualy all about Bingie was more about the music. The sax player steped up from time to time and really nailed some solo's... "Jammin" was especialy nasty.....

Very sparse crowd last night but the ratio was phenominal!!! With Jaybone, Stapes and Hood all no shows, I was left with more choices than voices.... good muff last night

  14. HEy POG

I can't claim any credit for this one.

My understanding is that the boys in nero brought this show to Babylon's attention, and Babylon jumped all over it.

This will be a treymendous show!!

If you wana travel for it, I got a couch for you bro... in fact you should come down for the DOY/Downtime set blender on July 12 as well......

  15. Herbaliser rocked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was completely blown away by everything last night. I remember talking with Adam at Babylon earlier this week and he was concerned the show might not do so well...... holly shit.... he was one happy man last night, there had to be no less than 400 @ $25 each.... I'm glad this show was as sucessfull financialy as it was musicaly, hopefully that will encourage more of the same.

Herbaliser was sick..... A different level of funk... a whole different breed of hip-hop.... and as mentioned above... NOT a jam band! They worked us up soooo much.... built us into a frenzy of madness with their deep funk, dance beats and mad scratches...... peeking.... peeeking... peeeeeking..... then right at that climactic moment, they pull the plug.... At one point I thought Jaybone was gonna cry.... he was ready to loose his shit.... turtle head was out! Then they pulled the plug... oh man the look on his face was one of pure horror, yet it made me laugh.... "no, NO, NO, You can't end the song like that!" he screamed....

Despite their habit of keeping all the songs under 6 minutes, Herbaliser was an awesome experience and I would recommend them without hesitation.

You soccer freaks will like this. In order to get Herbaliser to do their encore, the 400 people in the bar erupted into this "yo yo yo" soccer chant... it was loud! and spooky.... but it worked as the encore was 3 songs....
