Hey Y'all i'm back! Time to start getting ready for Evolve and all that!! I'm headed out to east this month with my reggae band, The Irie Band... I was asked to join this past summer, and it has been an awesome musical experience playing with authenic Jamaican musicians. IRIE BAND EAST COAST TOUR www.irieband.ca www.myspace.com/iriebandtoronto Wednesday, April 18 The Phoenix, Fredericton, NB w/ Dub Antenna Thursday, April 19th On the Verge, Wolfville, NS $7 w/ High Plains Drifter Friday, April 20th Pat's Place, Antigonish, NS w/ Downtown Saturday, April 21 Nep-tunes, Saint John, NB w/ High Plains Drifter Sunday, April 22 La Salla Rosa, Montreal, PQ $6 here's our bio: The Irie Band is a Toronto-based reggae outfit that delivers dub riddims in a classic, Jamaican late 70s and early 80s style. Formed in January 2006, the band is fronted by seasoned reggae veteran, Steven Cogdell. For six months, the band played a weekly gig called Irie Tuesdays at Cervejaria Downtown, that honed them into a tight, heavy unit. Irie Band has performed at The El Mocambo, Lula Lounge, Ciao Edie, Parkdale Arts and Crafts Festival, Come Together Music Festival, The Townehouse, Kensington Market, Revival, Ellington's, Starlight, The Trane, Fez Baitk, Lee's Palace and at the Freedom Festival at Queen's Park to over 5,000 people. Steven 'Lionheart' Cogdell, a foundation member of Sunforce and Revelation, is from Cocoa Beach, Florida. He has appeared on CityTV, MuchMusic, CBC and his original songs and the video "Lost Without Your Love" have been played in Canada, the USA, the Caribbean, Germany, Belgium, France, England and South Africa. Steven combines his steady rhythm guitar with bluesy solos to come forward with a high-energy roots reggae sound. Collin 'Jahlin' Edwards on drums was born in Hanover, Germany. In1987, he began performing as the drummer with reggae band Imagine Rainbow Warriors, led by local activist Steve Hall. He returned to his family roots in Jamaica in 1992 and stayed until 2003. He has worked with such artists as Gregory Isaacs and Yellowman. Collin's dynamic drum work gives the Irie Band its raw, hard-hitting edge. Uncledropsi, a veteran bassist of 16 years, is a crucial part of the heavy sound of the Irie Band. Always musically inclined, Dropsi learned the clarinet as a teenager. In 1997 he joined the Selassie I Power Band with his brothers, Reuben and Fredlocks. Winners of a Canadian Urban Music Award, these road warriors toured Canada for 6 years. Dropsi's highly defined style keeps the crowd on their feet and moving to his powerful rhythm. Jay 'High Plains Drifter' Cleary, on rhythm and lead guitar was born in Toronto. Jay started his performing career while studying jazz at St. F.X. University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, co-founding his own funk-fusion project, High Plains Drifter. A versatile guitarist, Jay has played with Caution Jam, Duane Andrews, Mark Wilson & The Way It Is and he toured for 3 years with Aaron MacDonald. He has performed at the Atlantic Jazz Festival, Evolve Festival, Toronto Island Jazz Festival and more. Jay adds his enthusiasm and a funky jazz sound to the Irie Band. Henderson 'Killa' King on keys has produced for Freddie McGregor, George Nooks, Steve Knight and Prophecy. Henderson backed Lt Stitchie and Admiral Tibet with his first band, The Bomb Squad Band. He then moved on to play with Juno-nominated band Leejahn, locally, as well as at Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Killa's next band, Mystical Explorer Band, backed artists such as Ken Booth, Mikey Spice, John Holt, Gregory Isaacs, Johnny P, I Wayne, Fatan Mojah and toured with Def Jam recording artist, Sizzla Kalonji. Henderson brings an enormous amount of passion and experience to the Irie Band. here are some photos:
