  1. www.nufunk.ca & www.jazzbygenre.com present: GURU: JAZZAMATAZZ www.gurugangstarr.com Pocket Dwellers www.pocketdwellers.com Rhythmicru www.rhythmicru.ca plus Phatt Al and Nick "Brownman" Ali Sunday, December 3rd, 2006 MOD CLUB THEATRE www.themodclub.com 722 College St. Toronto, ON ticket info to follow... Rapper/composer Guru first rose to prominence as the "lyrical half" of the hip-hop duo Gang Starr, one of the first outfits that attempted to fuse jazz with rap. After three albums by Gang Starr hit record store shelves (1989's No More Mr. Nice Guy, 1991's Step in the Arena, and 1992's Daily Operation), Guru launched his own solo career, issuing Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1 in 1993. The album featured guest appearances by the likes of Roy Ayers, Donald Byrd, and N'Dea Davenport of the Brand New Heavies, and was followed up two years later by a sophomore solo outing, Jazzmatazz, Vol. 2: The New Reality, which again featured a variety of special guests (including Ramsey Lewis, Branford Marsalis, and members of Jamiroquai). Despite his solo career, Guru has remained true to Gang Starr all along, continuing to contribute to such further albums as 1994's Hard to Earn and 1998's Moment of Truth. Five years after his second solo outing appeared, Streetsoul was issued in 2000, which again featured a stellar cast of supporting characters: Herbie Hancock, Isaac Hayes, the Roots, Erykah Badu, and Macy Gray. Wasting little time, Guru returned directly back to the recording studio, issuing a follow-up one year later, Baldhead Slick & da Click. In addition to the aforementioned artists, Guru has collaborated with some of rap music's best-known producers, including fellow Gang Starr member DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Alchemist, Ayatollah, and DJ Spinna, as well as Ice-T, Naughty by Nature's Treach, Killah Priest, and Ed O.G.

  7. Toronto Peeps... Help Preserve Cherry Beach Park! The Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation (TWRC) and Toronto Economic Development Corporation (TEDCO) have created some amazing plans for the waterfront and deserve credit for putting together what promises to be a great community in which to live and work. They have also however underestimated the need for treed greenspace parkland. This space exists along the waterfront South of Unwin Avenue. For some reason in spite of the plans presented outlining different locations the TWRC/TEDCO has decided to place concrete and Astroturf soccer fields and an additional parking lot right by Cherry Beach and in the process cutting down over 250 mature trees! The save cherry beach petition is now online. Please take a moment of your time to click this link and add your name to the list of supporters. Thank you. SAVE CHERRY BEACH PETITION http://www.petitiononline.com/scb2006/petition.html ...we ask that you please pass this on to friends and friends of friends of our community. For more information please go to... www.savecherrybeach.ca http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?scb2006&1

  13. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported, it was a great night, too bad for the rain, but we partied till late and were treated to an almost 2 hour Wassabi Collective performance. The band is at the top of their game, each member of the band is a highly skilled player, bringing intricate lines and original sounds to what has become the Wassabi Collective sound... electro funk, reggae, soca and rock. Phat Conductor, Telefunk Sound System, Rollin' Cash (dressed up as a very believable Borat) and the Irie Band added to the vibes... Great costumes and vibez! Hope to see all you guys again on Nov. 10th for the BURT NEILSON BAND! WASSABI SET LIST: GONG SHOW ONE DAY YLANG BUSTED FAVOUR REASONS FLOWERS BLAZE BLISSFUL DANCE SHINE * w/ Jah-lin (of Irie Band) on Drums ALMIGHTY
  14. WASSABI COLLECTIVE w/ IRIE BAND THURSDAY, OCT 26 - WATERLOO, ON LAST NIGHT REVIEW Last night @ The Starlight Room, The Wassabi Collective were on fire.... The band's sound is definitely changing, and the Red Rasta himself Brent "Gisto" is stepping out as a formadible foil for percussionist/vocalist Melissa Meteresky's soulful vocals. Mixing their electro-tribal n' funk sound up with extended instrumentals, Reggae and Soca-dancehall riddims. The crowd and the venue were a perfect mix of ambiance that fostered one of the tightest WC performances I have ever seen. New compositions surfaced as well as new arrangments of Wassabi Collective mainstays kept it interesting for long time fans. A song which was explained to me as a "Indian flavoured jam" was annouced on stage with the name "CHUTNEY" which I found very ammusing. The Irie Band opened the night, playing instrumental dub and covers of Keep on Movin' (Peter Tosh version) and Bob Marley's Exodus. Gisto joined the band on 2 songs, spitting out improvised rap-reggae rhymes with much conviction and fanfare from the dancefloor. The final song of the Wassabi Collective set was "SHINE" which is drummer Jimmy Lewis's love anthem. Listen to a demo version here: www.myspace.com/jimmywassabi . Complaining about the dificulties of singing and drumming at the same time, Jah-lin, the tall African drummer of the Irie Band, stepped in to play drums, as Jimmy sang his powerful and sentimental ballad. Melissa was shone as well, performing on 4 congas and djembe, her energy and talent continues to be at the center of Wassabi Collective's success for the past 6 years. Great to see some skanks there... Jon was peaking out about the Slip, 'Shwa was getting his groove one. Jon from Jomomma was all smiles as were many dreadies and young earthy-types. Hope to see you guys out tonight for this special engagement!
