  1. from www.nowtoronto.com this week NOW MAGAZINE Disc Review Maylee Todd Choose Your Own Adventure (Do Right!) By Benjamin Boles Mixing music and comedy is a strange thing. Most of the time it doesn’t work: the jokes suffer from repeat listening, and it’s not easy to take silly songs seriously. Once in a while, though, someone brings it all together in a delightfully weird package, which is exactly what Toronto’s Maylee Todd has done on her wonderfully wacky debut album. Style-wise, she’s all over the place. There’s trippy, ethereal harp strumming, lilting bossa nova influences, cosmic jazz vibes, doo-wop references, uptempo soul grooves and chanting children, but somehow it all jells. The subject of a song like Aerobics In Space is definitely on the goofy side, but she delivers the tune with such giddy joy, you can’t help appreciating its ridiculous fun. It’s a lot easier to write deathly serious songs than to capture the spirit of light-hearted good times, but which would you rather listen to on a sunny summer afternoon? Top track: A Lullaby For My Fictitious Children Maylee Todd plays the Piston Saturday (June 19) at midnight as part of NXNE.

  7. EMBRACE PRESENTS in association with NuFunk.ca TEA LEAF GREEN & CORNMEAL Friday, July 16, 2010 - The Great Hall 1087 Queen Street West, Toronto it's been awhile since we've seen Tea Leaf Green in Toronto, and Cornmeal's show at the Drake last year was impressive. Please help spread the word of this great jam, bluegrass, roots and rock n roll show by inviting your friends on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=114484315261502 TICKETS $15.00 Advance (plus service charge) • 19+ Event • Doors @ 8PM TICKETS ON SALE AT http://www.ticketweb.ca/t3/sale/SaleEventDetail?dispatch=loadSelectionData&eventId=2135125&pl=embrace, ROTATE THIS, SOUNDSCAPES & PLAY DE RECORD. http://www.myspace.com/tealeafgreen San Francisco-based band Tea Leaf Green got their start in the relationship formed between guitarist Josh Clark and drummer Scott Rager, who played in a high-school band together in Arcadia, CA. After graduation, Rager enrolled at San Francisco State College, where he met bassist Ben Chambers. When Clark moved to San Francisco, the three began playing together as a trio. Their first paying gig was attended by Trevor Garrod, a singer/songwriter and keyboard player who had moved to San Francisco looking for other musicians to play with. Garrod met the three others, and soon they were playing together as a quartet. They built a following in Northern California and self-released the albums; Tea Leaf Green, Midnight on the Reservoir (2001), Live at Slim's, San Francisco CA (2003), Living in Between (2004), and Live at the Independent (2004). They issued their first national release, Taught to Be Proud, in 2005 and within a year they were opening for Gov’t Mule, Trey Anastasio, Dave Matthews Band and a host of other lauded musicians. In 2007, longtime bass player Ben Chambers left the band and was replaced by Reed Mathis, formerly of Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. Mathis’s stylistic versatility on bass proved to be the perfect fit for the band. In 2008, Tea Leaf Green went on to re-release their first three studio albums as the triple-CD compilation entitled Seeds. Later that year the band followed up with their next studio album Raise Up the Tent. In June 2010 Tea Leaf Green will release Looking West, their first studio album in 2 years. The release is a compilation of road-tested, fan favorite songs that the band has never recorded in the studio. The album marks a new chapter for Tea Leaf Green and represents the artistic and individual growth of the band since their formation more than a decade ago. In a few short years, these road warriors have built a strong following, consistently filling venues across the country and becoming a warmly received, go-to band on the festival circuit with stand-out performances at Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, 10K Lakes, and The Echo Project, among others. Sharing some of the style and substance of musical contemporaries My Morning Jacket, Wolfmother, and the Raconteurs, Tea Leaf Green conjures the spirit of bands like '70s Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and The Grateful Dead, taking classic sounds and giving them a present-day polish. Tea Leaf Green reminds us at every turn just how alluring rock 'n' roll can be. http://www.myspace.com/cornmealinthekitchen Formed over 10 years ago, CORNMEAL has grown from humble beginnings into a nationally recognized live music institution. 10 years together is no simple task these days, especially when the last five have seen the band spending over half the year on the road. Heavily influenced by American roots and folk music, Cornmeal blends lightning fast tempos and impeccable harmonies into an unrivaled live performance that continues to expand upon the five-piece acoustic-electric groups’ vast musical repertoire. While steeped in the tradition of the past, Cornmeal continues to forge their own path, pushing the boundaries of bluegrass, Americana and folk for a whole new generation of music lovers. With a rapidly growing fan base and ever-evolving sound, Cornmeal challenges the recipe of the bluegrass sound and live performance. In the beginning of 2010, Cornmeal released their first live album, Live in Chicago, IL Vol. I, an album that pays tribute to the fans. For the first six years, Cornmeal performed each and every Wednesday in Chicago to small yet loyal crowds. Throughout the winters of 2007-2009, Cornmeal returned to Chicago to pay homage to that tradition. The album is for the fans as a thank you for all the years of dedication, for believing in Cornmeal, and for creating a wonderful community for them to come home to. The album was recorded live throughout the winter of 2009 at Martyrs’ in Chicago, IL. Unlike Cornmeal’s three previous albums, Live in Chicago, IL Vol. I captures the band in its raw, intense format, bouncing through song after song of fast paced, fierce originals and extensive improvised jams that showcase the immense talent and connectivity that have gained them so much fan appeal from coast to coast. While playing a blend of high profile venues, jam-band and bluegrass festivals to thousands throughout the region, the band has shared the stage with such highly acclaimed national acts as THE DAVID GRISMAN QUINTET, JOHN HARTFORD, THE DEL McCOURY BAND, LITTLE FEAT, LEFTOVER SALMON, TONY RICE, YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND, DARK STAR ORCHESTRA, moe, SAM BUSH and UMPHREY'S McGEE. They have performed at some of the most high profile festivalin the country including Bonnaroo, High Sierra, Magnolia Fest, 10K Lakes, Wakarusa, Summercamp, DelFest and many others. They pride themselves on the energy they put forth each night creating an unrivalled live performance that continues to shape itself into a energentic one of a kind experience. Live in Chicago, IL Vol. I proves that Cornmeal continues to be a band to watch out for. Every show they play is a unique experience that leaves fans begging for more. for more info please contact: Jay@nufunk.ca promoted in association with

  15. Make it Funky Presents... BEARDYMAN (UK) ::Toronto Premiere:: w/ DJs Big League Chu, Thunder, Farbsie, MickeyD & More Thursday, July 22nd, 2010 Revival Bar - 783 College St. Doors: 9 PM Advance Tickets: $15 at Play de Record, Slinky Music, Rotate This & Soundscapes Facebook Link: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=129613697049978 Online Tickets: http://www.ticketweb.ca/t3/sale/SaleEventDetail?dispatch=loadSelectionData&eventId=2138125 BEARDYMAN http://www.myspace.com/beardyman http://www.beardyman.co.uk/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beardyman The overwhelmingly talented Darren Foreman is Beardyman. UK BEATBOX CHAMPION… His best thing since sliced bread and butter vibe began with him smashing up the standard for beatboxing, becoming the heavyweight UK champion, ticking the WIN box twice for title of UK Beatboxer back to back in 2006/07. In 2008 he was the judge. LIVE MUSIC PRODUCTION… But Beatboxing has its musical limits so Beardyman went a step further to inject it full of knifeâ€edge music technology. Using up to 4 Korg Kaoss Pad IIIs and state of the art looping technology enables him to improvise live on stage to create tracks that that may take weeks in the studio, using the very vanguard of Live Music Production to build sonic soundscapes; a pistol duel at dawn with the capabilities of top DJs. Like some sort of musical Victor Frankenstein, on stage he works the sonic vernacular into mindâ€expanding mashups using the sole instrument of his voice. His diversity and ability to musically evolve makes his skills truly exciting, probably the reason guru Rob Da Bank calls him “literally the most entertaining live human being I’ve seen in donkey’s yearsâ€. NEW MODEL ARTIST… Casting off the traditional shackles of the music industry, and using the very apex of cutting edge technology in his performances and marketing, Beardyman is a revolutionary in the media platforms he uses and is at the forefront of a new movement that is redefining the silhouette of what a musical act should be in the digital world of Web 2.0 and 3.0. Without a record deal he has played to hundreds of thousands of fans and gained a database of over 50,000 online subscribers across his interactive fan sites. YOUTUBE SUPERSTAR… Beardyman is widely known for being a YouTube “Starâ€, famed for his comedic and jawâ€dropping virals beginning with Kitchen Diaries which has garnered over 5 MILLION views. Kitchen Diaries: In the truest sense of the word viral, the talents of Beardyman have pervaded every last corner of the globe, gaining tens of millions of viewers, surfing into homes on the most prolific medium of the 21st century. In November 2008 Beardyman was beamed LIVE into your computer as a main headliner on the first ever streamed concert, YouTube Live, becoming a supernova of the world wide web and personal hero of the entire Google empire (owners of the earth). Google offices: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3kyNGVK-hI Pre Youtube Live and since, Beardyman has been personally invited several times to headline Google‘s international Zeitgeist, climate and internal development conferences. FESTIVAL HEADLINER… On stage Beardyman has been playfully twisting the brains of ravers the world over with his unique brand of beatboxingâ€technologicalâ€mashâ€ups, leading them on sonic adventures with their addled minds. He’s graced the famed mainstages of Lovebox, Rise, Sonar by Night, Turning Point (the Roundhouse), Bestival, Snowbombing and many more, giving incredible performances that embraced the musical variety of the festival scene, memorably opening Glastonbury 2009 with a set in the Dance Village that was the flagstone for a sensational festival. His eye for talent has led him to join forces with artists of fearsome calibre, such as Fatboy Slim, Imogen Heap, Reggie Watts, Groove Armada, proving his dexterity as an artist. In November 2009 he made world history by performing and improvised show with a full sized orchestra in his collaboration with The Heritage Orchestra; sharing conducting duties with Jules Buckley, Beardyman used the sections of the orchestra as he would use his loopstation building fullâ€scale improvised tunage from Dubstep to Disco, House to Drum and Bass. COMEDY TIMING… Central to all Beardyman performances is a playful sense of humour. Well aware that his incredible career is based on his ability to “tune a raspberryâ€, Beardyman is able to make fun of himself and the audience with a natural comedic ability, leading to standing ovations at sellâ€out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe festival 2009, both with his own shows in the Udderbelly, Underbelly and at the Time Out comedy revue ‘For One Night Only’, as well as the Udderbelly on London’s South Bank proving an ability to cross over genres. In July 2010 Beardyman will be debuting at Montreal Comedy Festival: ‘Just For Laughs’. BATTLEJAM… Bringing it all home is Battlejam, Beardyman’s worldâ€renowned underground club night, which sees unprecedented quantities of ravers flock in unprecedented droves to clubs in London and Brighton, the respective hometowns of Beardyman and turntable mentalist and 2008 DMC Champion JFB. Battlejam is famous for its crowd interaction and quirky collaborations, between freestyle MCs, DJs and musicians. Ready to smash your expectations all over again, Beardyman is getting into the studio to record the stuff in his mind, and outside of the constraints of looping, the outcome should be intergalactic. The next step for Beardyman could well be one giant leap for mankind...
