In June 2018, one of most respected DJ/producers in modern music, Brooklyn native Vincent Williams aka DJ Spinna, sustained a ruptured appendix and required an emergency surgery.  With the help of an international music community a GoFundMe was set up to help pay for medical bills and lost wages raising over $60,000 US. The esteemed DJ, producer who has worked with the likes of Eminem, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Gilles Peterson, Jazzanova, Joe Claussell, Osunlade, Jazzy Jeff, Kenny Dope, DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist was told to cancel all upcoming gigs including this Toronto appearance.  Last week with the blessing of his doctors DJ Spinna has been given the green light to bring his world famous WONDER-Full party to Toronto.

“WONDER-Full™ - Tribute To The Wonder Of Stevie” a concept honoring the legendary genius Stevie Wonder.  Stevie Wonder has expressed his gratitude by calling into the party on multiple occasions and on the 7th installment of the WONDER-Full™ event, the audience was treated to a special surprise with an appearance by Stevie Wonder’s daughter Aisha, who inspired the song “Isn’t She Lovely.”  Also adding on to the memorable evening, the crowd received a live phone conversation from Stevie Wonder himself. As he spoke, one could hear a pin drop as everyone was mesmerized by this incredible moment. Stevie Wonder made a very special appearance at WONDER-Full™ Tribute/Concert after party in November 2007 in New York City where he delivered a heartfelt speech to the audience. At the 10th series of the WONDER-Full™ event, Stevie Wonder treated WONDER-Full™ audience to a 'mini' live concert!   Always expect the best of the legendary Stevie Wonder at the WONDER-Full™ events as DJ Spinna digs deep in his crates to offer anything Stevie related to the audience, always giving them a memorable musical experience.

DJ Spinna is something of an anomaly in music.  A humbling example of what it takes to truly succeed within the framework of multiple fields.  With a steadfast work ethic, an obsessively extensive vinyl library and the willingness to pursue the full extents of his roots (Funk, Soul R&B and Jazz), foundation (Hip-Hop) and future (Electronic/Dance music) without any restraints.  A cornerstone of Hip-Hop’s late 90’s indie-uprise, DJ Spinna made much of his first impression on listeners as the musical background of his group The Jigmastas (having released an impressive slew of 12” singles on his then self-run label Beyond Real during this time) as well as providing the canvats for an array of that era’s lyrical giants including Eminem, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch and De La Soul.

Turning heads throughout the industry, Spinna’s sonics soon infiltrated numerous genres. Tapped by everyone from Mary J. Blige, to Motown Records for his brilliant Michael Jackson remix of “We’re Almost There”. It’s here his production presence would flourish greatly, as Spinna would go on to revive and revise Jazz and Soul marvels like Donald Byrd, Eddie Kendricks, Betty Carter, Roy Ayers and Al Jarreau. Though it goes without saying his most memorable remix goes to his monumental version of Shaun Escoffery’s “Days Like This”, transforming it into a worldwide dance floor anthem.  Which in turn, catapulted Spinna into his now stately touted presence in the soulful house music scene. These releases resulted in the signing to BBE records in 2002 where Spinna released his cult classic fulllength production LP “Here To There” which crossed multiple genres and garnered the attention of serious music fans worldwide.

With so much studio work, it’s a marvel Spinna travels as much as he does.  The constant, globe trotting performances he’s become equally famed for have brought him as far as Iceland, Croatia, Australia, and South Africa as well as countless jaunts throughout England, and the U.S.  Also, his hugely successful tours of Japan, where Spinna is held in the highest regard throughout the country for his craft in music. Not always the lone crowd-controller, Spinna’s collaborated on stage alongside contemporary luminaries like Gilles Peterson, Questlove, Jazzanova, Dimitri from Paris, Joe Claussell, Osunlade, Q-Tip, Jazzy Jeff, Kenny Dope, Keb Darge, DJ Scratch, DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist.  He’s a true showman - versatile as ever.

Yet of all accomplishments, nothing compares to DJ Spinna’s celebrated Stevie Wonder inspired WONDER-Full DJ performances.  Garnering overwhelming fanfare each occasion done - whether NYC, LA, DC, San Francisco, Amsterdam, Japan or beyond - if a WONDER-Full event is booked at a club you can put money on a line around the block and hundreds of Stevie Wonder admirers joyfully rocking the house. Dubbed “Canada's Reggae Warriors," House of David Gang is an authentic reggae band from Toronto that delivers late 70s and early 80s-style Jamaican reggae originals; mixed with folk, tropical and Canadiana influences.  The band takes its name from the House of David, an after-hours hotspot for the Toronto's burgeoning Rastafarian and reggae community from the late 80’s until the mid-90’s.   The band adopted the name "House of David Gang" in 1997 when the House of David venue got closed down by city authorities who were able to evict the band based on zoning and noise bylaws.  The band then became well-known for live performances at The Bamboo and El Mocambo and hosting the Peter Tosh Tributes for over 25 years. Now the band continues to be influential for played over hundreds of dates across Canada and have shared the stage with top reggae artists such as Lee Scratch Perry, Xavier Rudd, Major Lazer, The Mighty Diamonds, Big Youth, Bushman, Mad Professor, Dawn Penn, Leroy Sibbles, Echo Minott, The Original Wailers and Ill Scarlett. The David Gang band members include Canada's top reggae session artists and have performed in front of enthusiastic crowds at some of Canada’s top music festivals including The Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival, Hillside Festival, Atlantic Jazz Festival, Beaches Jazz Festival, Toronto Festival of Beer, Ottawa Reggae Festival, Word On The Street, Irie Music Festival, Canada 150 Celebrations and more.  A career highlight for the band was a performance for over 30,000 people at The Freedom Festival at Queen's Park in Toronto.

Toronto Reggae collective The Human Rights celebrates 10 years of hard hitting live reggae with the best of Canada's Reggae Scene

In the spring of 2008 three veterans of the Toronto reggae music scene -- Friendlyness, Bernie Pitters and I-Sax decided to take a chance and come together with four freshly graduated music school students to form an original conscious modern-roots Reggae band. Just months later they found themselves on stage in front of a sold-out Phoenix Concert Hall opening for one of the biggest names in Reggae music, Gregory Isaacs. The spark caught fire and ten years later, The Human Rights are at the top of their musical game.

To celebrate the momentous occasion, the band is presenting a special 10 Year Anniversary party featuring an array of special guests and old friends from across the diverse Toronto music scene including: Exco Levi, Dubmatix, Ammoye, TDot Batu, Maracatu Mar Aberto and many more.

Since they came together, The Human Rights have built a reputation as one of Canada's top Reggae bands -- specializing in original, high-energy, modern roots reggae with a mix of jazz, funk and R&B influences. The band is fronted by Juno nominee Friendlyness (formerly of Culture Shock & Big Sugar) and Juno nominee Tréson on lead vocals and features a blazing 3-piece horn section, two stellar guitar players, and a rock steady riddim section, topped off by legendary reggae keyboardist Bernie Pitters (Toots and the Maytals, Hit Squad, Leroy Brown, Sly & Robbie).

looks so good...  I saw Larry lead a Tribute to The Band at Lincoln Center a few years ago.  What an accomplished and tasty player!  That whole woodstock, Hudson Valley scene is very rich, and Larry's been in the middle of it.
