  1. People seem to have little problem with critics so long as they're on the same page as them. If you go to a show and the paper gives it a good review, we quietly celebrate the critic for being "correct". When it gets a poor review, we lash out at how someone so stupid could not experience the brilliance they had in front of them, and silly letters are written to an editor who couldn't care less. People, I think, also like to assume that constructive criticism is more useful and effective than more combative forms of criticism, which is certainly debatable. I don't think it's the role of the critic to necessarily be constructive, kind or balanced in his or her craft, the minumum at best is simply to be informed and experienced. I'm not making a judgment as to whether Luke is a good or bad critic of the scene but it's mostly because I'm far more fascinated by people's reaction to him, and his style of writing, than the man himself. Scratch below the surface of people lobbing back and forth and a lot gets revealed.

  7. I think this topic is a repeat' date=' and may have had "Yellow Snow" as one of the entries. Aloha, Brad[/quote'] here's the previous one, if we consider it a match. 8. Why should anyone necessarily have to give a balanced take on anything? It sometimes serves no other purpose than trying to appear kind and cool to other people. Better to just say what one thinks and be done with it. I think that good journalism should be a mix of personal opinion, but constructive enough to give details about the sound, direction and compairisons. I agree that's a cornerstone of good journalism. But making a post on a public message board has nothing to do with journalism and it's standards.
  9. and I agree, I don't know what constructive purpose it serves, other than to demonstrate a range of opinion within the community, which is his perogative. And yeah it's frustrating for sure, occasionally amusing but largely frustrating. Point is, I know it's nice to be nice all the time but it's too much to expect from every single person on a public forum. People can be as sweet or as brutal as they wish. I really only ever went to Nero to look at you anyway. You were so beautiful.
  10. Let's see, I'd say most of the guys in the Fat Cats are my friends, known them for a long time now. If you wish to say something untoward about them as individual human beings, that would rub me the wrong way, sure, and I would defend their good characters. But you could say whatever you like about their music and I would have to concede you're perfectly entitled to that view. So while I might not agree, I wouldn't feel the need to stick up for their music just because I like them as people. Separate the music from the individual people making it and judge accordingly but be honest; if you think a band is good because they are nice guys trying hard and they're fun to party with and to know, well that doesn't have anything to do with their music. For instance, I never really enjoyed nero much but I always thought the guys in the band were A+ dudes. Hey, I'm being perfectly honest here. Finally, yes this is a public place. That's exactly the point. edit: I know I've got drawn into both the Slowcoaster thread and this one but remember I never said one thing about what I think of either band. I just think people can say what they wish about the music they hear and they don't need to be either diplomatic nor fuzzy about it, if they so choose. It's not like I necessarily *agree* with Luke here. I just don't feel like I have to either way.
  11. Songs about teenage love: 1. Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road 2. Tom Petty - Last Dance with Mary Jane 3. Neko Case - That Teenage Feeling 4. The Police - Dont Stand So Close To Me 5. Meatloaf - Paradise by the Dashboard Light 6. Big Star - Thirteen 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12.
  12. I understand how you might not like what Luke said or how he said it but I fail to see how you have any basis for feeling offended by his statements. He's perfectly entitled to make them whether anyone gets unduly offended or not. I don't see how he's referring to you personally, so I just don't get it. Why should anyone necessarily have to give a balanced take on anything? It sometimes serves no other purpose than trying to appear kind and cool to other people. Better to just say what one thinks and be done with it. Have you thought at all that someone from a different point of view and influences might not be entertained by the Chamelon Band?
  13. I hate it when I agree with dima. It's one of my favorite discs ever, basically.
  14. and now this is what I, MarcO, listens to. It's very, very good!
  15. alright, I don't know if I think it's *better* than the original because I haven't heard the original for years - but as a contribution, I'll add a kickass Canadian "jam"band cover (bonus points: it's been released!). Cover songs played by Canadian jambands that do better than the original. 1. Kool and the Gang - Jungle Boogie (Diesel Dog) 2. Iron Maiden - Run To The Hills (Slammin Jack) 3. Donna Summer - I Feel Love (The New Deal) 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12.
  16. Happy Birthday Deb. All the best to ya!
  17. cheers to truly one of my favorite human beings! Happy Birfday Sara!
  18. so I write all that and I guess it DOESN'T MATTER! and all I can think of is Dr Evil Mouse lowering himself into a tub and scrubbing his boys. gee thanks.
  19. um, it's a highly subjective theme to start with, and yes one of the FEW rules is that it has to be have been made available by the artist. As far as I know, Diesel Dog have never actually COMMERCIALLY RELEASED this cover, nor has BNB commercially released their cover of Papa Was a Rolling Stone, nor the Fat Cats doing Groove is In The Heart, nero doing Hey You.... etc etc. So if you want to stick to the theme, I guess it's gotta be a collection of 12 songs covered by Canadian jambands and perceived by at least one person to be better than the original. So, you'd be looking to list the original artist and the tune and then paranthesize the band doing the cover. The 12 Song CD that would be hypothetically put together would have to contain the twelve original tracks, not the Canjam covers.
  20. ok, next theme: Songs about spices 1. Macy Gray - My Nutmeg Fanstasy 2. Neil Young - Cinnamon Girl 3. Butthole Surfers - Pepper 4. Simon and Garfunkle - Scarborough Fair/Canticle 5. The Searchers - Sugar and Spice 6. Beatles - Mean Mr. Mustard 7. The Grateful Dead - Sage & Spirit 8. James Taylor - Chili Dog 9. Ziggy Marley - Herbs An' Spices 10. MF Doom - Fenugreek 11. Kool & The Gang - Open Sesame 12.
  21. Zappa must have another song mentioning a spice?
