  1. I think it's kind of interesting how most people in our culture, myself included, are rooting for the Tibetan monks and would prefer to see the Dalai Lama restored to Tibet in all of his former glory, yet when it comes to western society we're all up in arms the second christianity, a religion that has just as much linked history than that of the Tibetan buddhism, comes anywhere near our own governments, let alone when one of its followers starts talking about reincarnation.

then again nobody's asking to use public funds to send a minority of students to Buddhist seperate schools... that the gentle Buddhist's were chased out of their country on a wave of genocide tends to soften some people's hearts

grew up Roman Catholic and wanted to be a priest when I was young... after much time and thought decided that while I appreciate certain elements of the teachings I don't believe in the overall picture... find Buddhist teachings make a lot more sense to me personally after weighing them against what I've experienced in this life

the concept of re-incarnation sounds way less bizarre to me (and a lot more fair) than the concept that if you did enough sinning in your long or short life you go to hell for eternity... or if you held back a little more on the sinning you get to go paradise for eternity

  2. not too suprising the 3 week benzedrine fueled effort of piecing the book together would need a few adjustments prior to publication

was apparently more myth than fact that he actually wrote the book from scratch in 3 weeks... more a case of when he had it all together he sat down and wrote it all out sequentially on a tear

Jack Kerouac's Famous Scroll, 'On the Road' Again

still want to read over the original writing even if it has less click than the polished release

  3. take the sky train from downtown and transfer onto the sea bus to pop over to the north shore (a great trip for a couple of bucks and nice way to get a look at the city, maybe even some seals from the sea bus) then go hiking up Grouse Mountain (obviously visit Lynn Canyon), check out the suspension bridge (unfortunately looks like it might be closed for the season)

visit the English Bay Bagelry, the Bagel Merchants or at least one of the west end cafes with bagels and have a pizza bagel and a coffee, either before or after a stroll around Stanley Park... English Bay is best place to people watch in Canada... the Sylvia Hotel is a nice place to stay (or to pretend you're staying at)

drop and check out the Haida totem poles at UBC then wander down to Wreck Beach (clothing optional during the warmer season)

take a miniature ferry from the West End (near Stanley Park) over to Granville Island (within city limits, near downtown) check out the artists and the market

don't wander too far east past Gastown, especially at night, avoid Hastings Street in general... I kind of liked it but the several people I saw get stabbed there didn't look like they did

(if you end up in Gastown be sure to check out the Steam Clock, otherwise pretty touristy)

definitely wander up and down Commercial Drive, eat things, drink things and talk to people

check out the Commodore Ballroom one night, swankly decorated and has a rubber dance floor

if you have wheels take a day trip up the North Shore to Squamish or somewhere, alternatively take one of the big ferries somewhere (the gulf islands are very cool)

could also check out the aquarium, the classic Chinese gardens, Imax theater at Canada Place, museum of Anthropology, etc etc etc

have good fun, its a great town!

  4. if you haven't read "The Naked and The Dead" read it, his first book I believe... best first hand account of what its like to be in war I've read, quite the eye popper... explains graphically why if you're going to be in the army you don't want to be in the low ranks of the infantry in times of war

rest in peace Mr. Mailer... good work

  5. ah, its the sleazeball building the place?

guess thats a bit of a down... but if so though guess I don't see money as being such an object

look at a well built, properly located venue in Hamilton instead of Toronto as similar to Auburn Hills in proximity to Detroit... less hassle finding than in a sprawling metropolis for travelers, cheaper accomodations, a night out of the big shitty for Torontonians... run properly and sensibly booked I don't see any reason it couldn't fly

  6. the village has turned into a drunken party place as the live music has been phased out... I know the property they want to use and think it'd an ideal locale... none of the other medium large local venues really feel that comfortable to me, I go to them once every couple of years when something great drags me through the door

not holding my breath for it but am willing to dare to dream... worst that happens it doesn't happen, oh well

have noted that the new mayor is enthused about new ideas and seems willing to encourage the city taking some chances... not always the case in hamilton politics so an extra reason to give it my "yay"

  7. I say chase out the bad with good

just because some idiot sets up shop in a neighborhood I visit doesn't mean I should vacate, more the other way around... not so funny thing is I think business has actually increased at "Sleazeballs" since that story broke... would love to have a good business next door to him to support

  8. would be great to see some more live music return to Hess street... was a great place to be 10/15 years back... maybe a return of the real jazz festival could come of it... back in the heyday a lot of people traveled to town for the sake of the music (more recently its become much less quality music, less travelers, all the focus on selling beer... talking festivals here, the local bars are probably booking more consistently good acts than ever)... Hess is a great summer location due to the close proximity of so many patios, and its just a pretty street

am definitely enthused about any efforts to revitalize the core of the city above sprawling out more cardboard cutout subdivisions into the surrounding farmland... given a few wise moves think

  9. I heard that FbN and Paisley schnoogled in that auburn hills hotub

actually showed up at the hotel with a lady of the evening who was missing a good number of her teeth and smoked a funny pipe

had left the show and drove around for a while in a somewhat colorful state of mind... realized I'd missed the hotel and had no idea where it (or I) was... stopped to get some beer to ponder my situation in what turned out to be an area of Detroit white hippie Canadians probably shouldn't wander around in late at night... after asking a couple of gun packing locals for directions ran into "Sherry" running down the icy street in her heels and fake fur... she was good enough to offer to show me the way to the hotel if I'd hook her up with a drink or two... so after a brief show down with a tinted windows cadillac containing 3 large leather trench coated black fellows "Hows it goin!" "Whassup." we split shakedown street and located the hotel in a timely fashion

Sherry thought everyone were best people she'd ever met (she actually offered me a schnoogle when I drove her back down to her fancy neighbourhood but I assumed she'd had lots of schnoogles and gracefully declined)

  10. Holiday Inn - Auburn Hills Michigan!

    Best hotel experience ever!

    Nov 2003:

Pool open ALL NIGHT! Drinking allowed, smoking, cannonballs in the hot tub! Made for an incredible post The Other Ones pool party! The staff was so chill.. if you were smoking, bam, tin ash tray, at your service. Drinkingn from a bottle? No problem, here's a cup for you to pour that into.

Our room was on the second floor, right next to the stair case, which was the back entrance to the pool area.. that was sure handy!

I forgot a bunch of clothes down at the pool and they had them for me at the desk at check out!

I bet someone else has alrady posted about this place by now..

yeah! that night was awesome times indeed... good call
