  1. Where is CTMF this year? IMSMR, there was problems with the old venue late in the year. What are the dates for the various CTMF festivals? Fiona and I are going to take a miss on WicCan Fest this year, so we are contemplating taking in one of the CTMFs this year. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Oh yeh, and I heard a song on the radio last night that someone could do a great cover of: "The Things We Do For Love" by 10cc. Actually notwithstanding the fact that I'm not the world's biggest Garica fan, that would have been a nice one for JGB to have done methinks. It's in the same mold as some of the great R&B covers that he did. (If I'm crazy please feel free to let me know!)

    Gregson & Collister (former members of Richard Thompson's band) did a pretty cool acoustic version of it ... I don't know if the album is still in print, though ... it's on my "really big list of songs I'd like to do some day.

  3. On the whole "Eminence Front" thing (probably the best late-era Who tune, IMnsHO), there was a discussion a while back about the best segues you'd like to see bands do, and one of them was:

    Eminence Front ->

    Voices Inside My Head* ->

    Elephant Talk**

    * Originally done by The Police.

    ** Originally done by King Crimson (one of the later line-ups with Adrian Belew)

    Now if I could just get a band together who'd be willing and able to do all that...

    Aloha,

    Brad

    Hey, you've already got a vocalist ... all we need now is a rhythm section, another soloist or two, rehearsal space, a PA, microphones, and we're laughing ;)

    Weird ideas for covers that have been going through my head lately (if *I* ever get a band together) :

    Down The Dolce Vita - Peter Gabriel

    For Your Pleasure - Roxy Music

    Ten Years Gone - Led Zeppelin

    4th Of July - Soundgarden

    Conquistador - Procol Harum

    Station Man - Fleetwood Mac

    Sandy Mary - Fleetwood Mac

    Falling - Matthew Sweet

    Reefer Madness - Hawkwind

    Lover Of The Bayou - The Byrds

    Change Of Heart - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

    Youngstown - Bruce Springsteen

    Free Four - Pink Floyd

    Do Your Thing - Isaac Hayes

    Shadow Of The Sun - Paul Weller

    Say Goodbye To The City - Tindersticks

    and the segue I've always wanted to try ...

    The Other One ->

    Run (Spiritualized) ->

    The Other One ->

    Keepsake (Crime & The City Solution) ->

    The Other One

    I could go on (And in fact have)

    Long windedly yours,

  4. Miles

    I don't know you Rob Vincent.

    Hey, none of this is easy ... it's Jimi, Johnny, Miles and Jerry, it's hard to pick one to kick off. I haven't liked to take off *any* of the guys in this round, and if I hadn't gotten in such a lather to defend Elvis in the first round I wouldn't have gotten sucked into this, but sucked in I was ...

  5. By the way, not that anyone cares at this point, but did you know that after Elvis died, they did an audit of his assets and his estate only totalled $5-15 Million? I know that seems a lot for you and I, but this is freaking Elvis we are talking about here .... boiled down to bad management by the Colonel. What happened however was that Elvis' father Vernon was named executor of his estate ... and he promptly turned the post over to Elvis' ex-wife Priscilla ( as mother of Elvis sole inheritor, Lisa Marie). It is pretty much due to Priscilla's management that Elvis' estate is today worth $300 Million US.

    Just a side note ...

  6. Weezy,

    As a favor to me , a fellow board member, would you mind awfully replacing the pic of Elvis with a younger, better one? As I said, I'm possibly the biggest Elvis fan on the board, and *I* am voting him off, but we've had plenty of exposure of the the fat dying last years of his life Elvis, and I hate having to remember him that way. Just a humble request ....

  7. Vaya con dios, Stevie, it was never anything personal ...

    This one has been a really stacked deck, I'm a fan of all of these guys (including Stevie). The field is particularly tight at this point. There is no way in hell I am voting Miles or Jimi, and voting Jerry at this point would get me lynched (I've probably pissed off enough people here with my defense of Elvis), so it comes down to Elvis or Johnny Cash ... gritting my teeth but, honour having been satisfied, I have to vote for Elvis. Sorry, King, I bet I have more Elvis music in my collection than anybody here, but Johnny Cash is just more punk rock, which appeals to me more. Again, nothing personal, it's just a hard choice.

  8. Elvis wouldn't have had to "keep up" with anybody ... with his best band he gave the musicians space on stage to do their thing. Why the disrespect for the vocalist's art? There's more to music than just jamming music, folks ... or is the sole criterion of this their jamming skill?

  9. In defence of the numerous slanders against the King ...

    First off, the frequent jibe against him that he just stole a bunch of African American music and ripped it off . Elvis was notable in that he was one of the earliest modern performers who didn't see barriers between styles of music. He love a lot of different types of music ... blues, r&b, Country, black *and* white gospel, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, they all went into Elvis' melting pot of influences. Check out those early Sun singles and throughout his work with RCA (particularly his first single B side, Blue Moon Of Kentucky) and a lot of it is as much Country as any other influence.

    Secondly, the idea that he never made any good music after the 50s ("Elvis died when he left the army" - J. Lennon) is also complete bunk. If we ignore his soundtrack work (apart from a few odd great songs, generally a good idea to ignore) most of his 60s and 70s recordings are great ... from the Elvis Is Back album, through some cool but ignored non-soundtrack singles in the 60s, through the early 70s (check out the albums From Elvis In Memphis, Elvis Country, and the movie Elvis on tour), most of the music he made during this period was top notch. Check out the tours he made in the early 70s, he had an absolutely storming band ... James Burton, Glenn Hardin, Jerry Scheff, Ron Tutt, he had one of the most deadly touring bands in the country. Towards the last few years of his life, yes Elvis did have some depressingly bad performance, due to personal and health problems (including but not limited to his weight gain and drug use), and many of those were self induced ... I understand he is the only musician to ever experience such a slide towards the end of his life (*cough* Jerry Garcia *cough*) ... but still, he made some fine recordings even then. His last single, Way Down, kicked no small amount of ass. Elvis was a great musician, in spite of the bad end of his material, his worst musical failings stemmed from bad management (the Colonel was a great promoter but kept Elvis shackled during the 60s to a depressing series of bad movies with even worse soundtracks) and his personal/health/drug problems. Elvis was not a god, he was a fallable human being, but his work deserves respect.

    Stevie Ray Vaughan, you're outta here ...

  11. Thanks for a fine day of fun, folks. Thanks also for making my beloved wife feel welcome when she was there. Lots of great music that day. And I finally made it back onto a stage! (Any stage!) Maybe not quite my greatest performance hour, but it was fun to be singing again, if only for a little bit. Again, lots of thanks to the Jiva Ju guys, and very sorry for the raspberry jam incident.

    Cheers,

  12. Thanks to all for a great time at the Spincycle/Dr. Hux Acoustic show last night, it was awesome getting to learn about a new band and seeing a new favorite. Did anyone at Cafe Dekcuf by any chance find a hat I might have left there in a booth or something? It is a red, black and brownish winter hat, it is hard to describe but I think I might have left it there. If anyone found it, could they please let me know, the hat is rather special to me, it was a Christmas gift from my folks. [Frown]

    Cheers,
