  1. I was at that show. Wow. He poured so much raw, human emotion (think Jeff Beck's covers of "'Cause We've Ended Up As Lovers" and "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat") that it was out beyond "jazz" guitar and into soundscape/music-as-feeling territory. Mind-blowing, heart-wrenching, soul-enhancing.

I'm now on the lookout for the Frisell/Holland/Jones disc (whose name is it filed under?).

    Aloha,

    Brad

  2. "I've always been crazy, but it's kept me from going insane."

    -- Waylon Jennings

If you have any craziness, it's about as much as the rest of us*, and it's applied in wonderful and constructive ways: your music, and the friendly vibe you give off (i.e., it's *good* craziness, not *bad* craziness).

    Aloha,

    Brad

    * Which means we may not be fit to judge, but let's skip that part for now...

  3. Colour me disappointed. I kept watching it, thinking, "When are they going to get to go to T.O.?" For all the Toronto they featured, it could just as easily been St. Louis or Paris or Salt Lake City (which might have been better: they could have had some Olympic jokes). The jokes could have been better: they used American stereotypes of Canada/Canadians, whereas it would have been more fun to use Canada to point out weird/bad/ugly stuff in the U.S.A.

I was thinking that this season was a letdown; this episode confirms it.

    Aloha,

    Brad

  4. Desparately needing to get out more, I actually have a set of song titles I'd like to use someday:

    - Action Figure Meltdown

    - Avatar Overload

    - Gelatin Dessert Overload

    - I Beat You With The Turkeys*

    - Nice Work If You Can Get It

    - Paladin

    - Ready, Kids?

    - Teddy Bear In A Thong

If any of these work, it's yours (although I reserve the right to re-use it; that is, assuming my writing ability catches up with my song-naming ability...)

    Aloha,

    Brad

    * Thanks to Catphish for relating a dream she had, in which there was a shopping competition at a grocery store, where you had to fill your cart with $125 worth of groceries. She went for Kraft Dinner, I went for frozen turkeys, and I won...

  5. Well, if it's for the BOOTY, I think I'm in. (I had it in my head that it was last night...so it was good I was wrong, 'cause I wasn't up for it, and decided not to go...) Are we talking "Dedicated to the preservation of motion of *hips*" kind of music, here?

OK, where's best for the pre-show? The Brig? The Laff? Is there still a bar below the Mercury?

    Aloha,

    BRAD (Booty! Ripplin' And Dancin'!)

  6. As an alternative, how about something *not* solid: make a loosely-held webbish community, with threads out into as many areas as possible. Mailing lists, web rings, cross-links, etc., could all help to distribute the communal nature, rather than concentrate it in one place. People would be free to start their own little communities and then hook them into the larger web. Each community would be a little different (e.g., different kinds of music), but it would be easy to move between them. Start-up "kits" could even be offered that would let people easily create their own communities, and customize them the way they wanted. It would also allow the on-line communities to be based in real physical communities.

I don't have any objection to One Big Site (and this isn't a criticism of it), but my idealistic nature leads me to want something more anarchic, unplanned, and ground-up.

    Aloha,

    Brad

  7. a) Probably Corn Bran.

    B) Life Cereal...back in the days when you couldn't get it in Canada. My Grandmother used to take bus trips to Buffalo for shopping and bring it back for us.

    c) When I'm at a resort on vacation, I just stick my face in the buffet trough and start snorfling, leaving a seriously packed omelette for last.

    d) Burritos at Come Together in September...what a way to start the day.

    Aloha,

    Brad

  8. I have a couple of questions about CheeseCake:

    - Who's the Svengali-like behind-the-scenes producer/promoter/manager (you know, like the guy who put Menudo and NKOTB together)?

    - Have the nameless session musicians been lined up? If not, give me a call; I'd love to be a part of the backup band.

    - Who's going to write the tell-all book, to come out after the first couple of drug/sex scandals?

    Aloha,

    Brad

Nope, that was originally a Bruce Springsteen song; the version most people know is a cover version by Manfred Mann's Earth Band.

    Aloha,

Brad, who saw Loverboy in '86 (on a triple bill with BTO and Van Halen) and hated every second of their show

  10. The Bayou's a nice place. I've never been patted down, and they were letting tapers in for a show on Saturday ("The Music Never Stopped", a Grateful Dead cover band). They have snacky food, but I'm not sure about pretzels. The beer selection's not bad, and the staff are good and friendly (it was cool at TMNS gig to see the waitresses grooving along watching the band).

    See you there.

    Aloha,

    Brad
