  1. If escalators were made exclusively for walking or exclusively for standing, they would not have signs on them that say, quite clearly, "WALK LEFT, STAND RIGHT"--a wonderful compromise for all to enjoy the wonder that is an escalator--whether your individual preference is to walk, or to stand.

  2. Look--a new and exciting recurring thread--Pet Peeve of the Day!

    I'll start:

    Dear Chapters,

I was in one of your stores recently and happened to glance at the alphabetized listing of your various departments when I noticed that something was awry...

Pray tell, are you actually selling "stationary"? If so, how much do you charge for the opportunity to stand/sit perfectly still?

Next question: Where do you keep the dictionaries? If a store that sells books and, presumably, a volume or two on spelling/grammar (including those pesky homonyms) cannot get their signs right, what hope is there for the rest of the english-speaking/-reading/-writing people of the world?

    Forsooth I do despair,

    Julia

P.S. Also, Dear Chapters, did you know that one of your exemplary employees enjoys bag-sniffing on the weekends? It's true--his name is POG and he sniffs bags.

  3. I'm so psyched for this you wouldn't believe it.

He's such an un(der)appreciated lyrical genius. If you haven't heard him, I highly recommend checking him out.

That being said, the post above cracked me up about "coming out for drinks before the show." Not that there's anything wrong with a few drinks before the show, heaven forbid, but getting liquored up for John Prine is somewhat akin to Bender suggesting to Brian Johnson that they "load up, party" before the Physics Formal....

    :)

  4. Excellent--the weekend is best for me, but since it would be at her house, she can prepare as lazily as she likes since she'll be on holidays.

I'll email you when I know for sure!

    :)

  5. My friend in Brampton is gauging interest from her friends at work and we're going to talk about it this weekend and we'll let you know.

She was very interested--she just wants to make sure its not just going to be just her and me (not that we're not really fun...!) :)

One question--will you still be doing parties around the Christmas holidays? My friend is a teacher and so that's obviously the best time for her. But we're flexible.

  6. My friend Matt said he ran into Lucy at a Dead show in the early 90s...and I saw her a few weeks ago on Queen street, looking gorgeous, with a gorgeous child in her arms--it seems wrong that Lucy's a mom!

Also, a friend I was in university with is now the head writer/executive producer of the Next Generation--I wonder if he can hook me up to hang out with Kevin Smith? I freakin' love that guy.

  7. I'm so freakin' impressed with this band.

I had pretty low expectations for the show--not sure why. Even though I really enjoy their songs, I guess I was a little skeptical that they could pull off what they do on their albums onstage and add that something extra that you expect from a live show. Maybe I'm just a jambandsnob. Who knows.

And holy crap were they awesome! So much energy, great rapport with the audience, they sounded amazing--I kinda wish today was yesterday so I could see them again for the first time. They put on a fantastic show.

Here's the setlist--the questions marks indicate songs that I wrote down but are entirely illegible. Ya win some, ya lose some. :)

If anyone else was there and disagrees with what I've got, please advise--some of the other titles were very nearly illegible as well so I was just giving it my best guess.

  8. No problem!

I'm a big fan of the entire progression of bands I noted above...in fact, I just picked up an old GSW cd at the used record store the other day.

In an unrelated revelation, you know you watch too much Law & Order when "GSW" is intrinsically understood in your own mind as the acronym for "Gun Shot Wound"...

    :)
