  1. We've been looking forward to this one for a while! Rose Garland will play a ninety-minute set, getting underway at 12:30pm. The stage is located on King Street in Dundas, Ontario, between John & Church Streets. Admission is absolutely free.

The Dundas Cactus Festival is one of the most succesful and longest-running street festivals in Southern Ontario. It's family friendly, with a wide variety of entertainment and vendors on display all weekend.

    Hope to see you there!

  2. And to address \/\/illy's original post, it's just the folks who handled the Dead's live concert recording series that won't be working with the band anymore. Rhino Records (affiliated with Warner) now own the exclusive rights to market the Grateful Dead's (and by extension, The Dead's) live concert archive. They'll pay a hefty yearly minimum plus any additional royalties to the band to retain marketing control of the Vault for the next 10 years. The band retains the right to have final say on what's released and how those releases are handled. David Lemieux has also been retained as Archivist by contract to oversee the Vault's contents, which have now been moved to the Warner compound in California.

The 4 remaining members are set to make more coin than they have since the Dead's heyday of the early nineties.

  3. No problem, Chameleon! I didn't take your post as a knock on Rose Garland (or any other Dead cover band, for that matter), but I definitely know where you're coming from. While Grateful Dead music is open to at-the-moment interpretation, there are indeed certain definitive signposts that virtually define their respective songs. The pleasure in playing the music is being able to put your own stamp on it, while at the same time having the band absolutely nail, say, the extro to the jam in St. Stephen. Stuff like that always puts a smile on my face! :)

  4. I hate Grateful Dead cover bands, they always fall flat, 'cause having seen my fair share of Grateful Dead shows I'm always comparing them to the "Real Thing" in my mind. Also GD ocver bands almost never get all the counterpoint hooks right in the music.

Then again, for much of their career, neither did the Grateful Dead. :)

  5. For those of you that are staying closer to the Golden Horseshoe this weekend, and are considering checking out some cool free entertainment with the Festival of Friends this weekend at Gage Park in Hamilton, consider dropping by the main stage (Robinson Bandshell) to groove away to a set of good ol' Grateful Dead with Rose Garland. We crank up the P.A. Saturday afternoon at 3pm.

    Hope to see you there!

  6. What a fantastic show ... I can't help but think of the "lesh philling, bass great" lot shirts that I used to see at Dead shows ... I have gained even more respect for Phil as a bass player and as a person who can put together a stellar band.

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole show, especially

    The Wheel>

    Unbroken Chain>

    The Eleven>

    Truckin'

And the sound quality where I was sitting (lower section 201) was stellar ... the best sound quality that I have ever heard at a amphitheatre show.

I couldn't agree more, Mark! Two notes into Unbroken Chain, and I was a puddle! And the good times back at the campground with wonderful friends put the icing on a perfect day... it just does't get any better!

  7. Sweet night... thanks to everyone who made it out... and no one got stabbed! ;)

    Tap's Tavern

    Friday, July 16, 2006

I: Jack Straw; Greatest Story Ever Told; Brown-Eyed Women; Hard to Handle > Ramble on Rose; Me & My Uncle > Cumberland Blues; New Minglewood Blues; China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider > Bertha > Good Lovin' > Deal

II: Foolish Heart; Mr. Charlie; Friend of the Devil; Loser > Sugar Magnolia > He's Gone > Truckin' > Eyes Of The World > KSM Jam > Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)

The owner was very impressed with the "non locals". In fact, we'll all be invited back in the near future... hope to see you then!

  8. Hey folks... just added to the gig, a special guest acoustic band including a Harvard Mouse or two to keep those feet shuffling between sets of good ol' Grateful Dead!

Tap's Tavern... 255 Parkdale Ave. North, Hamilton

From either Toronto or Niagara, take the QEW to Hamilton and exit at Burlington Street. Hang a left on Parkdale Ave; Tap's is located a few blocks down on your right.

1st set gets underway at 9:30. Hope to see you there!
