  1. deb, ask chuck about his adventures in inadvertent people smuggleng...had his car confiscated and had to pay many $$$$ in fines to get it back.

the lesson is make sure that you ask all passengers heading stateside whether or not they have ever been refused entry...i think the question never came up with chuck's friend, in the eyes of US Customs chuck was assisting the illegal entry of a person into the US. and this was pre 911 to boot, they'll probably shoot you now :)

Trust me, it's not something that you want to be messing with. Always know EVERYTHING about the folks in your vehicle; you're responsible for them and anything that they've done in the past, whether you willingly know it, or in my case, are blissfully unaware.

This was back in 1991, and it took almost 6 months for me to get my name cleared and car back. I had to go for two interviews with U.S. Customs (guess I wasn't convincing enough on the first one) and even after they found me clear of any wrongdoing, I still had to pay about $1000 Canadian for "administrative fees"; as the lady on the phone explaine it to me, it was to cover "stationary, postage, paper clips... that sort of thing". Sheesh...

The good thing was that the U.S. Marshals stored my car indoors (I had only had it for about a week), took it for a spin around the parking garage once a week to keep everything nice and lubricated, and even washed it before handing it back over to me! To this day, they still look at me suspiciously when I try to cross (haven't been refused, though) and about half of the time I'm guaranteed to have Customs run my credentials, which is probably just their way of letting me know that they're still keeping an eye on me. That said, I'd probably do it all over again...I mean, you would too if you had seen the bikini that my friend had packed for Florida...

  2. We have a piano/keyboard player who will be making his home in Hamilton as of September, haven't mentioned anything to him yet...

Hey...are we talking about the same keyboard player that's expressed interest in playing for Rose Garland when he gets to Hamilton this September? Don't make me arm wrestle... ;)

  3. Hey Snail, sorry to hear about your predicament, but I'm sure that it'll all work out in the end.

One story in favour of Steve's:

Recently I found myself in dire need of a new bass cabinet; after doing some research, I decided to go with a particular model of Ampeg. The problem was, I couldn't find the model I was looking for anywhere in Ontario. Steve's said that they'd overnight what I was looking for from Montreal, promising that it would be in the Toronto store the next day for me to try out. It was, and they knocked 50 bucks off of the price that L$M quoted me (score!). The salesperson helped me haul the thing out to my car, where I noticed a 30 dollar parking ticket on the windshield. To my amazement, the sales guy zipped back in the sore and soon emerged with 30 bucks for me to pay the ticket with! How cool was that?

That said, I've dealt with a number of pricks there, too; and the place is wayyy to inconvenient for me to get to (I usually frequent L&M in Burlington)

  4. Cool! Consider your resume on the top of the pile. Stay in touch and let us know when you get in town, and we'll be sure to set up a jam.

Anyone else interested in playing some Dead on the keys with Rose Garland (or knows someone that might be right for the job)? We pay well... :)

    Chuck

p.s.: Hey Tim, I hear that you've been dabbling on the piano. Get to work on that Slipknot... ;)

  5. ...who are into the Dead? Are you from the Hamilton/Niagara region? Do you have your own equipment and reliable transportation? Do you like playing in front of kind, dancing folk? If so...let's jam! Simply reply to this post or drop me a line at ez2slp@hotmail.com, and let's have some fun!

    C

  6. Thanks for the well wishes, Tim! As a matter of fact, the evening was a rip-roaring success! We managed to shove a couple hundred bodies into the Boatahouse, and while I don't have a final total, I know that our eventual donation to the Canadian Cancer Society will be in the thousands! It was especially fun being the backing band while the hairdressers did their thing out in front of us, and to see some very obvious non-heads dance the night away! Methinks that we'll have to do this again very soon and scale it up a notch (what are Harvard Mouse and Diesel Dog up to? ;) )

To you, a heartfelt "thanks".

  7. Sorry for the short notice, but I've been having problems posting images since the forum makeover. Here's the link to the poster:

Hope to see lots of kind faces donating their nickels, dimes and quarters for a worthy cause that's hit far too close to home for a number of us lately...

Special thanks to Timmouse for sitting in for the second set & encore; I'm the luckiest guy in the world with double drummers going full-tilt in stereo behind me! Looking forward to to when we do this again!

  9. One evening, it was a huge show and we were rocking out big time. When that huge last chord came, I raised my bass triumphantly in the air and came down with the headstock HARD on our conga player's head. It really hurt him and everybody saw it!!

On the brighter side, I'll bet that you're now the one that gets the most square-footage of stage to call your own.
