  1. In addition:

"1977 SBDs will be added back to the archive. However, GD sound engineer/archivist David Lemieux is currently in the process of editing these shows to remove Donna Godchaux's vocals.

Other select shows will be added to the archive, including Boreal Ridge '85, and select 1992, 1994 and 1995 shows. Apple refused to pay for these shows as part of their agreement with GDP."

Before we jump all over the Dead and make it sound like it's all their fault that the soundboards have been taken off the archive, and that they're just a bunch of greedy old farts, consider this: they've had the opportunity all along to stem the tide of soundboards being made available to the trading community, and have always chosen to do nothing about it, save for the shows that they've released as Dick's Picks, etc. Now all of a sudden EVERYTHING is pulled. I also find it strange that they don't say why Donna's vocals are being removed, and why apparently just for the '77 shows. This has Apple's, and not the Dead's, greed written all over it; the second paragraph in the quote above leads me to believe that they've licenced the contents of the vault for purposes of distribution. Perhaps Donna isn't (or doesn't want to be) part of that agreement. Maybe Apple just thinks that her singing sucks, and that they'd sell more downloads if she wasn't in the mix. Regardless, I could see this progressing outside of 1977, to the point where Donna no longer appears on ANY show, regardless of year. And when the '77 shows return to the archive, will they be just as they were (and as they should be), or will they be the new (improved?) versions? I'm guessing the latter. If he hadn't been cremeated, Jerry would surely be turning in his grave right now.

That said, think about this: in order to remove Donna's vocals, Lemieux won't be able to use the multi-generation 2-track sources that made up the bulk of the soundboards on the archive; he'll have to remix from the multitrack masters that are in the vault. So while they'll be Donna-less, the sound and mix should otherwise be phenominal... which would sort of be like having a REALLY great piece of cheesecake, but without the cheese.

Gee, I wonder what Apple will do with DSO? Does this mean that Donna's parts can't be sung during their shows anymore? :)

Seriously though, will they keep folks from taping at the DSO shows, since technically what DSO would now be doing is reproducing a property of Apple? Just makes me wonder how far Apple could take this...

  2. Details have been finalized for the 3rd annual North-Halton Deadhead Family Christmas Party! Once again it will be held in Milton, but this year we've decided to go with a different venue: "The Post Office", which is located in Milton's historic old post office building, located at 243 Main St. East (corner of Main & Martin). Music will start around 9:30ish, but you're invited to show a little early and try some great micro-brew and some of the best eats in town! We also won't be charging a cover this year; instead you'll be encouraged to make a yuletide donation to the Canadian Cancer Society at the door. Hope to see you there for a great night of music and dancing!

Via the 401: exit at RR25 (exit 320) and head south on Martin Street until you can't go any further. That's Main Street; the Post Office is the building on your left with the clock tower.

Via the QEW: exit at Bronte Road (exit 111) and head north approximately 15 minutes into Milton. At Main Street (there's a Zellers on the corner) turn left and go to your second light. That's Martin Street; the Post office is the building on your right.

  3. It's been awhile since I've posed a Rose Garland gig here, and I think that it's about time that I get back into the habit! December 16th, we're gonna try out a new venue in the Garden City: "The Honest Lawyer", located at 84 James Street, downtown St. Catharines. There'll be lots of good ol' Grateful Dead on tap for yer dancin' pleasure (and maybe a few surprises, too!!) Feel free to drop by and share a cold one!

  4. Yes, it does seem a little... Weir'd. I couldn't even imagine us (Rose Garland) being invited to open and cover songs that the headline act has made their living from. I could just see it now...

"Yeah, Bob, we're gonna open with Jack Straw, then we thought that we'd segue nicely into Sugar Magnolia, followed by a rather slippery version of Lost Sailor > St. of Circumstance. We also guarantee to get all the words from Truckin' straight. And if you want, you can join us at the end of the set for a rousing Playin' > Sunshine Daydream. Hope that you weren't planning on playing any of those..."

Oh well, it doesn't hurt to dream. ;)

That said, congrats on the opening and closing slots! And a serious question: since Ratdog works from a setlist, have you (or do you expect to be) provided with a "do not play" list?

  5. I vote for the hot sauce question, too. I was up in Ottawa recently, and although the proprietor of the local hot sauce shop had heard of Weir's sauces, she said that she wasn't having any luck in stocking it... and she said that if she COULD get her hands on it, it would probably be very expensive. But then again, she suggested one of Michael Anthony's, so what the hell does she know.

  6. I love listening to Alan Cross' "History of New Music" on CFNY... he's written a few books that I've really enjoyed' date=' mostly on Alternative music.

I was looking for an Almanac he wrote a long time ago but had no luck finding it. So I wrote him an email, asking where I could find a copy. He wrote me back and told me they were no longer being sold on the shelves BUT he would send me a copy he had lying around in his basement. It arrived 2 days later with a nice little message autographed inside. Pretty cool dude, if you ask me.[/quote']

chuck from rose garland aka dark_starr worked for him in hammertown for a while, seemd to have good things to say about him. the guy knows his music.

It was in fact Alan who hired me to come to Y108 in Hamilton. He is indeed a great guy (and not just because he gave me a job!)

SHAMELESS PLUG--> Y108 (107.9 on your fm dial) carries The Ongoing History of New Music with Alan Cross, Sunday nights at 10pm.

  7. Come for the parade and stay for the tunes: Rose Garland plays a special afternoon gig at Kaz's on St. Paul Street in St. Catharine's tomorrow afternoon, right after the annual Grape and Wine festival parade wraps up! (roughly 1pm start time) The wine's gonna be tasty, the weather beautiful, and the tunes perfect for shakin' yer booty on a Saturday afternoon... hope to see you there!

  8. The big news is that he also said that Booby asked him to play bass for the Dead's 40th aniversary run, which was going to be annouced soon, and is going to take place in NOV/Dec. He said he wasnt really sure if he wanted to do it b/c he was really close to phil, but Bobby said that he was the only bass player they would have to take phil's place

Really? Where's Rob Wasserman these days?

I'm pretty sure that I can make time in November and December. Heck, I know all of Phil's parts! Anyone got Bobby's number? ;)

  9. My sentiments exactly, Mark! It was incredible to be part of such a wonderful evening. It really is a pleasure to play for so many smiling faces (and the odd teary-eyed one during He's Gone and the encore). And to the guy yelling from the back: you got yer Other One. :)

Rose Garland, for the record (dedicated to the memory of Jerry Garcia):

Don't Ease Me In; Greatest Story Ever Told; Brown-Eyed Women; Deal; Help On The Way > Slipknot > Shakedown Street > He's Gone > The Other One > Jam > Truckin' > Throwing Stones > Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)

    Encore:

    Touch of Grey

  10. That's right... we'll be groovin' at The Office on James Street in downtown St. Catharines this Friday, July 29th. First notes at 10:30pm. We've got a number of dittys that we're gonna debut, and we'd hate for them to be wasted on nobody's ears! No cover, either... so your drinkin' dollar goes farther!

    Hope to see ya there!

    Chuck

  11. The sound was awesome last night...

Ironically, the vocals blew next to the soundboard (and walking around the venue, most everywhere else, too) Very boxy sounding. At one point, I suggested to the soundman that he might consider a tweak in the lower-mid range of the vocals. His response? "It's not my fault, it's the room." Excuse me, but as the soundman, is it not your job to deal with the room? But then again, that's what you get when you have the house guy doing sound...
