"Somebody has to do something, and it's just incredibly pathetic that it has to be us." -Jerry Garcia

Guitar.com: What are your musical limitations?

Garcia: I’ve got nothing but limitations, I’m limited by everything — my technique, background, education, the things I’ve heard. I’m limited by being a human being. In a way, a musician with a distinctive style is in fact a product of his limitations. This is assuming that almost everybody plays at the outside edge of their ability — as good as they can do.

How would you like to be remembered?

Garcia: As a pretty okay musician. I don’t really expect to be remembered—that’s way ahead of me. I’m still trying just to get good. If I get good, then I might say I hope people remember how good I am. The idea of being remembered would be embarrassing to me at this point. It’s like, remembering is dangerous.

"It could be that music is one of those things left that isn't completely devoid of meaning. Talk - like politics - has been made meaningless by endless repetition of lies. There is no longer any substance in it. You listen to a politition making a speech, and it's like hearing nothing. Whereas, music is unmistakably music. The thing about music is that nobody listens to it unless it's real. I don't think you can fool anybody for too long in music." -- Jerry Garcia (1971)

Astral Plane

-------------

When I was on earth

and just a man

I traveled long

I traveled first

making magic with my band

With my trusty laughing wolf

or maybe with my tiger in hand

I sang to you

I played for you

I was such a happy man

So many roads

so many songs

so many days

I traveled long

Stuck in the astral plane again

won't you help me to get higher?

stuck in the astral plane my friend

won't you help me to inspire?

Just my luck

I was born a teacher

I tried hard

to be no preacher

Spinning tales

and singing songs

plucking my strings

I carried on

But my work here

was not done

A wounded warrior

I should have known

I come to you now

from the stars

with your help

the band plays on

The music never stops

it's always been here

even in silence

there are songs to hear

CHORUS

Everyone knew my face

my smile, my beard, my glasses

I tried hard

to get to that place

I tried for all the grateful masses

And those that followed

oh they knew

but most did not even know me

yet when the light

came shining through

together we all could see

But something was not at ease

some say I left too soon

early one august with a full moon

I slipped away

I slipped away...
