CyberHippie
I'd stay far away from HP burners... They work when they work, but they don't seem to have a really long life, and according to HP Tech support that should be expected (bullshit). I have a yamaha now which I picked up for $115 I think, and it's been working really well!

bouche
I've only heard good things about the high-speed LG electronics burners. You can be burning at 48X with those things and probably pick one up for under a hundred bucks. Burn proof as well.

Basher
LG burners are great - BUT specify an 8MB buffer for more reliability (most above 32X have a 2MB buffer). You may only be able to get such a beast in the 32X flavour.
bradm
Is the buffer size a hardware option, or a thing that gets configured (e.g., in a dialog box) by the user after installation? Aloha, Brad
Booche
Its a hardware option I believe...........

Basher
LG 40X12X40 Internal CD-RW Drive $69.99 from Future Shop (after rebates) with free shipping. Good deal.
SolarGarlic
yeah, i have the LG 40x model and am really enjoying it! The burn proof is GREAT. As for the HP models, i think they are pretty hit and miss. Although, I have and external 4x HP burner that still works after about 3 years or so. Literally burned thousands with thing. Plextor is the obvious choice for the "high end" stuff i suppose. THey cost more but have a proven track record. Personally, id go with the LG BSherman posted ... \/\/illy
I've got a Plextor drive and I've never had a disk screw up and I've never burned a disk that wouldn't play in anyone else's anything (CD, Car, Computer, etc.) I'd highly recommend it.
