Tricky
big black was a mid-'80s chicago post-punk band that began as a solo project by steve albini, who went on to produce little-known albums like "in utero" and "surfer rosa." he's an independent music icon due to his staunchly anti-corporate business policies and unapologetic outspokenness. he has a really interesting essay about record labels here if you're interested. anyway, big black (which ended up being augmented with members of naked raygun) made some of the most confrontational, unsettling music of the '80s. they basically take the anger, black humor and rawness of punk and graft it to early industrial music by way of their truly chilling guitar tone and the use of roland, a drum machine and the band's fourth member (which is weird because, as a producer, albini is pretty famous for his ability to get a particularly great live drum sound). also pretty noteworthy are albini's rather fucked-up lyrics, which caused a lot of fanzine drama in the '80s for their character-based examinations of misogyny, racism, sexism and the like.
