Toronto transit workers to strike Monday

CBC News::

TORONTO - People in Toronto will face commuter chaos on Monday as the city's transit workers say they'll walk off the job then.

The union representing 8,400 employees turned down the Toronto Transit Commission's final offer in negotiations on Friday.

The union had set Friday noon as its deadline for what it called an "acceptable" offer, and had said no further talks would be scheduled over the weekend if a deal was not reached by then.

In a news conference Friday afternoon, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 president Bob Kinnear said the TTC would now have the weekend to think about the consequences of its negotiating strategy.

However, he refused to say if the union would still refuse to come back to negotiations if the TTC tables an improved offer before the strike is set to begin.

In March, TTC workers rejected an offer that would have given them two per cent raises in the first three years of a five-year contract.

TTC Chair Howard Moscoe said the commission "moved heaven and hell" to come up with the best offer.

"I don't know what the union wants," he said.

Moscoe said he was prepared to continue discussions around the clock "until we put this to bed."

A strike would leave hundreds of thousands of people scrambling to find ways to get to work.

The TTC carries about 1.3-million passengers each day.

The TTC workers' contract expired April 1.
