dJEd
ok these cats were somewhat similar and i think this makes for good time wasting.i'm a bit of a wanker for artist to artist comparisons. let me start by saying i have all the major releases from both artists so its not like comparing Chilliwack to Nazareth or something. i'm an idiot.anyway...personally i like smElliott a lot more than Nick. well. well maybe not a lot more, but more. elliott has more material though.i wish i could make polls. or even poles. PassedOutGuy
really been enjoying Nick Drake alot lately but unfortunately have just gotten into him... Will have to give Elliot Smith a listen soon if he is a similiar artist.. Edited June 23, 2005 by Guest
ReDD
I have to disagree. Based on lyrics I enjoy Nick Drake more becaue he isn't as dark. His voice is sweet, haunting and leaves a huge emotional impression on the listener. Eliiot's by no means a lesser lyricist nor has less of an effect. I just tend to lean towards Nick. Sarahbelle
this is hard cause I like them both so much,But I think I will have to say Elliot Smith just cause there is something in that voice of his...But they both create amazing beautiful music! MarcO
I love Nick Drake and have his three albums but truth is, I don't listen to them very often. Still, they are perfect for certain days, moments.Elliot Smith, never heard his stuff.
Kaidy Mae
Elliot breaks my heart. I love Nick Drake too, but Elliot had those vocals that could just tear your heart out at times...so soft, so ragged and raw (one of the many reasons I love Tweedy as well). So sad. AdamH
Sad, ragged and raw. That sums it up neatly. If I have a discman and headphones I'd put on Either/Or, and if I'm alone and high I'll probably be crying at the end. If I'm full of rage I'll put on Pink Moon and by the last track I'll be calm again...kind of like Donovan but with less of the wierdness. They're each suited to different moods but between the two I'd lean towards Elliot if only because his albums were mixed properly, and because his multi-tracked voice sounds incredible on the most recent (forget the name of it now..the one released after his death)
scottieking
One of the biggest difference I think is with Nick Drake you assume he's a sad guy. With Elliot, you know it.Nick - fresh, breezy, liltingElliot - raw, pain, honest
AdamH
This is an admittedly politically incorrect observation to make but I'll put it out there:Nick Drake died from an apparent overdose of antidepressantsElliot Smith died from a self-inflicted knife wound to the chest. Jaimoe
I like them both, but Nick Drake made me like folk music again.Nick was an innovative guitarist and fascinating lyricist and was a cult hero before cult was cool.I prefer Nick, but the world is a better place with both Elliot and Drake. hamilton
...and because his multi-tracked voice sounds incredible on the most recent (forget the name of it now..the one released after his death)I think it's called From A Basement On A Hill.I've only heard a bit of it, but what I heard sounded great. dJEd
Basement on the Hill is gold. apparently there was a lot of dispute redgarding the ifnal mix. some of the songs were finished according to rothrock or somebody and the other guy who was resposible for the final sound said otherwise. i don't know. Twilight is my fave from that particular record.
