The prof is/was an idiot. To leave sensitive and propietrary information on a machine he carries around (and which could be lost, stolen, or even outright destroyed [car accident, anyone? how about a fire?]) without having secure backups (stored elsewhere), and without having the information on the machine encrypted and verifiable (e.g., using message digests or checksums) is, in my opinion, inexcusable. The companies he's consulting for are either stupid for not imposing security requirements on the data the prof had, or negligent in not enforcing any requirements they had.
