Great Bear Nature Tours is seeking a highly motivated

candidate to work as the Lodge Chef at our ecotourism

lodge on the central coast of British Columbia. We host

guests from around the world to view and photograph

the grizzly bears of the Great Bear rainforest. The lodge

accommodates a maximum of 10 guests, thus providing

a very personal experience. After a day of world-class

wildlife viewing, it is our pleasure to provide wilderness-

gourmet fare to further enhance their experience.

Job Description:

The Lodge Chef is responsible for the operation of the

lodge kitchen. This position offers a unique opportunity

for the candidate to hone their gourmet cooking skills,

polish their customer service skills and exercise their

talents and creativity while living in a beautiful

wilderness area. The chef has creative control to

modify the current menu as they desire.

Your duties are:

* Cooking and presentation of all meals for guests and

staff.

* Supervision of the kitchen tasks of the lodge host, who

will be your part-time assistant.

* Interacting with the clients in an open-kitchen format.

* Ordering of food items.

* Safety and cleanliness of the kitchen.

* Develop menu items as needed.

The lodge staff will consist of yourself, a lodge host, two

bear-viewing guides, a lodge manager and lead biologist.

Period of employment will run from May through October.

Minimum Position requirements:

1. Must have culinary experience in the classroom and in

the workplace.

2. Strong interpersonal skills, clean professional

appearance.

3. Driven to provide excellent customer service and exceed

customer expectations on a daily basis.

4. Ability to work cheerfully and independently in a remote

lodge for long periods of time, working and living very

closely with other staff members and guests.

Highly Desirable additional qualifications:

1. Working verbal ability in any of the following

languages: German, Italian, French, Spanish, or Japanese.

(In order of importance)

2. First Aid training.

Additionally Successful Candidates will:

1. Be self-starters with a strong work ethic.

2. Be independent and respectful of other staff work

obligations and personal space.

3. Savor life in a remote wilderness setting with limited

access to communication or traditional social life besides

limited Internet use while at the lodge.

Realities:

* Work schedule is 10 days on at the lodge, 4 days off

in "town". Room and board provided at the lodge.

* Port Hardy is the town, which is small by most standards,

and 3 hours north of Campbell River.

* You will be expected to share a room at the Lodge.

* We work in a rainforest. It can rain daily for two weeks.

It can also be sunny for two weeks.

* This is a relatively small floating facility, which feels like

living on a large boat.

When I moved to Golden in 2002 I had a hell of a time finding a job. It was HARD. I didn't have any luck at Kicking Horse. I ended up working at The Dogtooth Cafe, which turned out to be really fun. I also worked part-time at ABC Country Restaurant.. Worst job of my life! Getting one of those Parks Canada jobs is the way to go for the Summer in that area, if you can get in. They have a big lumber (?) mill in Golden too.

the "industry" is pretty good here, most restaurants in town are always looking for good staff of all kinds, plus cooks for rafting companies, bartending jobs are a little hard to come by but if you come early and commit there'll be jobs...come on out and enjoy the mountains and midnight sun!!!

Red Seal= CCC or Certified Chef de Cuisine . It's not only interprovincial, it can be used in other countries but you still have to meet that countries requirements to obtain their certification. Having a red seal doesnt really mean a damn thing though, all it shows is you passed a test, doesnt mean you can dance on the dancefloor when shit gets hairy. I want to Salt Spring eventually, but I really want to be out before the Olympics. Vancouver (pretty much all of BC) is the main vien of the culinary world right now so just think about 5 years down the road when its Game On.

C-towns, is the tower in Calgary hiring for the summer yet?? thats a killer job. I worked in the CN Tower and the one out there is run by the same company. My little brother runs a Thai place in Bow Island you should check that out.
