The Chameleon
Who was the last PM you thought did a good job, upheld Canada's good name and made positive progress for this nation? This is my choice: All the rest since have either been inept, grossly corrupt, on at best absentee and done nothing. And given our current PM I'd love a do nothing prime minister right now. Ugh! djmelbatoast
Don't forget the white papers.I can't think of a single one that I would say I'm proud of. Pearson is probable the closest I could come to being proud of and most of that comes from being forced to work with the NDP in a minority government. Birdy
AND the latter's line of "I may not always be right, but i will always be on the side of right" has been with me for years.
djmelbatoast
McDonald was an alcoholic, elitist whose only real accomplishment was taking illegal campaign contributions in order to pay railroad barons, who in turned hired Chinese slaves to build the railroad. Birdy
well, i see "CANADA" as an accomplishment... and as most of my friends are borderline alcoholics, i won't hold that one against him.
djmelbatoast
Fair enough. I've been known to enjoy the occasional spiritous beverage myself, but he'd get ripped on gin sitting in the house of commons with everyone thinking he was drinking water.Wait a minute, maybe I do like John A. The Chameleon
OK maybe "proud of" was a little strong. I mean we are talking about politicians here.Let's say who you though the last PM to do a decent job was.

Birdy
i suppose chretien. i don't know if i'd go so far as to say he did a decent job... cuz i really don't know what he "did"... but he overlooked some relatively uneventful years, like clinton, and especially in the days of bush, i'll let that say something. Dr_Evil_Mouse
I've always had a hard time seeing Chretien as someone other than the guy who rode to the leadership on Trudeau's coattails. So I'm going to go with Trudeau . Fuddle duddle!

Hux
It's that kind of thinking that allowed Harper to win. It's literally impossible for the NDP to form the federal government in Canada.

The Chameleon
Regarless of all that I still think Jack Layton is the kind of forward thinking PM we need right now.Someone who is progressive and willing to take a stand on rational foriegn policy. As oppose to the Harper governemt's bend over and lube up approach with the Americans.Layton all the way.And wether people voted for Layton or not really is inconsequential in the last election. The reality is that the Conservatives won becuase Paul Martin botched the handling of the sponsership scadal. The PC had to win due to that fact. Sad.Canadians need to vote conservatives in ever 10yrs or so to remind us of why we don't vote Conservative. Hux
I also think Ghandi would make a good Canadian Prime Minister but he has the same chances as Layton I'm afraid to tell you.The political ground game is my job folks, there are ridings that the NDP for historical, demographic, and philosophical reasons will simply never ever ever win. If you can show me the 120+ ridings needed for the NDP to form a government I will gladly have that debate.
djmelbatoast
So we should all vote Liberal than.Personally I think the two party system in the states is a joke. The Liberals are just like the Democrats, pretty much the same, just not quite as in your face about it.The only federal party I can vote for with a clear conscience is the NDP and guess what they won the seat where I live in the last two elections, by alot, over the conservatives, with the Liberals a distant 3rd.If more people in this country voted for what they beleived in rather than out of fear that the Conservatives would be elected then the government would be alot healthier.
