Ahmet Ertegun, who helped define American music as the founder of Atlantic Records, died Thursday at 83, his spokesman said.

His label helped popularized the gritty R&B of Ray Charles, the classic soul of Aretha Franklin and the British rock of the Rolling Stones.

He was at a Rolling Stones show at the Beacon Theatre on Oct. 29, fell, suffered a head injury, and went into a coma from which he never recovered.

Aloha,

Brad

From everyhting I've read about him, the dude was a real class act. He was as much about the talent and the music as he was about the business, which is something you don't see as often in today's record industry. Who else would have allowed CSNY to knock their own #1 single off the charts with another song?
