Tenenbaum
hey y'all,I need your help:I have to coordinate a trip for my bro, his boss and myself to Jazzfest; as you can imagine, there's a slew of musicians performing; can you be so kind to take a look at the list for April (the festival is divided between 2 events: April and May) and suggest any hot acts definitely worth catching:http://www.nojazzfest.com/from what I know, my bro's boss went to Montreux fest last year and really dug Taj Mahal.thanks! bradm
I haven't gone through the full list, but the first one that'd be a must-see for me would be Steely Dan.Aloha,Brad
phishtaper
whats on at the fairgrounds - the main "festival" - is only a portion of whats playing in the city. check out Jazzfest Grids for a more complete listing of other shows. be prepared for missing a number of acts that you'd want to see at the fairgrounds because the place is sooooo big it could take you 25 minutes to walk from stage to stage (there are many stages). your best bet to to decide on a weekend and book your trip around that. then start looking for evening, late night, late late night, and ridiculously late late late night shows on various posting boards. ive found that "planning" your jazzfest becomes a frustrating experience because everything is so fluid. book your flight, book your hotel, buy fairground tix, maybe buy tix for a couple of other show, and then just go with the flow. paisley
thats a great urlnojazzfest.comgotta love the new orleans sense of humourholy crap... I'd start at Dr. John (first on the list and a new orleans necessity) then just let the circumstances dictate it from there... bring money, listen to the inner you that knows all... there'll be a flow to things you can't read on paper (or webpages)thats a daunting list... bring money

phishtaper
Toots & The Maytals, Umphrey's McGee, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Garage A Benevento, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstafunk, Dirty Dozen Brass Band & Rebirth Brass Band, Greyboy, U2, Harry Anderson
edger
I'd second almost all the bands that phishtaper mentioned.Dumpstafunk at Bonnarroo was infectious! You can't go wrong with the Neville brothers it seems. In the past I would have definitely made Dr. John a priority, but truthfully I was extremely dissapointed with his lack luster performance at Bonnaroo last summer. It was almost like he was sleepwalking (mind you, it was relatively late for an old man...)
Tenenbaum
U2?!?!
paisley
Dr John at bonnaroo, I wouldn't go over the top for... couldn't pay me to go see him at a casino... but new orleans is like dr john's living room... he's a staple element of the city's noteriety, he'll be on... just keep screaming "Gris Gris... Gras Gras!!!" [edit to add: and wear a James Booker t-shirt ] neville bros rarely disappoint
