mister slippery
sounds good to me.worrying about rolen's health doesnt even matter when he's replacing glaus.good deal, methinks.
Hal Johnson
Yup, sounds good to me too. I wonder what St Louis is thinking?
The Chameleon
I dunno, seems like they are trading one injury prone third baseman for another and Glaus had more power in his bat.Although Rolan is better with the glove. We'll see.[color:purple]Either way neither of them is Rance Mullenicks or anything. :content:
badams
I think it will come down to which team has the better medical staff to keep either player on the field I like Rolen though, he is a fantastic defensive 3B.
guigsy
i like this deal for the jays.i think they're taking the same risks injury-wise, but when healthy, rolen is the better player overall. glaus may have the power edge, but i think rolen is a better hitter in general, and at least he has decent pop in his bat. also, if eckstein is taking over most everyday shortstop duties, rolen provides better help on the left side and obviously they know each other from st. louis. i think it'll pay dividends in the clubhouse as well, to have eckstein and rolen together.i think the cards come out of this deal in good shape, too - they needed to divorce la russa and rolen, and they needed to add some power to that line-up. win/win. Jaimoe
The Jays infield looks really good this upcoming year both with the glove and with the bat. Johnny Mac will go back to being a utility infielder of sorts.
afro poppa
I don't know what to think. It seems like a wash. If Rolen can recover from the debilitating injuries hes had the past few years he's more of what the Jays need on the field. We don't need the power as we have Thomas as our clean up, so he'll likely bat fifth (or sixth, depending on Rios). Plus Rolen improves our already stellar defence. What I don't like is how JP seems to just be going from side to side instead of moving forward with all his deals. This one could even be terrible if Rolen becomes a Hillenbrand type in the locker room or if he only play 60 games or so.

Jaimoe
They aren't favourably comparable here:RBI 1,012 778GOLD GLOVES 7 0I'm glad Rolen is a Jay and I found his press conference to be one of the funniest in recent memory. Dan Shulman said that Rolen when healthy, is the best position player in baseball.
Hal Johnson
Ya, and I say good riddance to Glaus - he didnt seem like he wanted to be here at all.
Jaimoe
Ya, and I say good riddance to Glaus - he didnt seem like he wanted to be here at all. He'a a withdrawn kind of guy, quite the opposite to Rolen's outgoing personality. I believe Glaus when he said the turf really affected his play and health.
Hal Johnson
Which is too bad, cuz he had/has a lot of potential. I remember when they got him that he was worried about the turf and it turned out to be really hard on him from the get-go. I noticed him limping up to the plate very early in his Jays career.Oh well, hopefully Rolen maintains his health. So as much as Im excited for this season with the pitching staff and all, I cant help but wonder what they're gonna do about their obvious lack of speed. My fear is that they wont do a darn thing. We need a base stealer dammit! And I forgot to mention a catcher. Zaun couldnt throw out anyone last year. And he's rapidly declining in skill. Jaimoe
Zaun should go back on the juice.

afro poppa
we need a new catcher definately...zaun is a good backup but as a starter he's below average at besthes still cashing in on his one good season a few years back with the jays
The Chameleon
I agree we haven't had a solid catcher in quite a while. We need a modern day Ernie Whitt, a catcher with clutch hitting and vetran leadership.
Jaimoe
However, we need a catcher that can also throw-out base-stealers from 1st to 2nd. Toronto has never had a catcher that could do that. Ernie had a bad arm.
