\/\/illy
In all seriousness, check what items appear in your 'Startup' menu. There may be all kinds of junk running in there. If there is, make note of it and post it here. We can figure out what to get rid of. There's also a secret registry location that could be running stuff at startup but we'll check that later. Basher
Startup items are almost definitely the cause. Go to start, run, and type msconfig and press enter. Go to the startup tab and either do a screenshot (talked about earlier) or list them for us "computer nerds".

\/\/illy
Hey Steve, it's HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run in XP. I think it's in a similar spot in 98 but I don't remember. Anyone running a 6 year old operating system deserves to suffer with poor performance. secondtube
best way to defrag and scandisc... DO IT IN SAFEMODE just a little trick i've found that stops me from having to shut down everything, and stop the network... just load into safemode, and start the scandisc, then the defrag... Schwa.
basher, the problem is i don't know what kind of program to look for that is running in the task manager. any suggestions?
Basher
Well, you can send me a screenshot if you want and I will dissect it. You can also click the CPU heading on the processes tab to see what is eating up the most CPU cycles. bsherman@jamhub.ca
secondtube
actually, what you want to be looking for is any program you dont recognize... a screenshot would probably be the best bet...
Schwa.
i don't recognize any of them. they all say shit like: navapv32 and gmt and cmsys.... ..and how do you do a screen shot, and what does it do? I also unplugged from the internet and started the defrag and left for 15 minutes and it hadn't started yet. How long shoudl it take before it gets going? Basher
A screenshot will take a picture of your screen. Press ALT and PrintScreen button, then paste the picture into paint or something.

Basher
Do the scandisk first.
secondtube
shwa, while correct, do the scandisk first, you really should be in safemode when doing the defrag and scandisk.... i've sat and closed every running program from my task manager, unplugged my modem, and my defrag still wouldn't go. if you restart your comp, press F8, then choose safemode, you will have no problem doing what your trying to do... Basher
Once you finish the scandisk and defrag I suggest you get the latest DAT updates for your Norton Antivirus and run a complete system scan just in case.

Schwa.
OK, i ran the trojan thing and it found 4 of them. It did not seem to help. How exactly do i get into safe mode? I restarted my computer but saw no promt for F8. I hit F8 still and nothing happened.
