But the topic is not solely to promote the dates, there’s more. You see, I am also going to be doing a film project with and for the band to use for promo stuff for the forthcoming album in the spring.

I will likely be filming the stretch of shows of Montreal, Burnstown*, Kingston, and Ottawa. You know like sound checks, chilling, eating before, etc. But specifically the *Burnstown gig at Neat Coffee shop is what the emphasis will be on as they hold a special place for that venue. The format for that show is two sets (so they will be likely premiering newer than new stuff, and other goodies) and it is held in a beautiful old school house converted into a stage. The front of the schoolhouse is a coffee shop.

So for that show we plan on doing some take-away style video shoots around Burntown, with backdrop of the beautiful Ottawa valley I think it would look really nice (around river maybe, or in front of the local church, attic of venue etc.). Also get some shots of the town, the venue, soundcheck, attic prep, the show, after-show etc.

Onto the matter…this is more of advice-seeking post. I am planning on renting two Panasonic HVX-200 HD cameras, wireless mics (maybe need a boom for the take-away style ones as well), the band will be bringing a 24 channel mixer (I hope, still need to confirm) etc. I was wondering if anyone has done a project similar to this? And if they have any advice for me or items to think of? Like I already know for the Panny HVXs since they run on P2 cards, I will need a runner to transfer the footage after 50some minutes to a hard drive and pop it back in (since they hold two at a time, you pop one out, transfer and format it and pop it back in). You know, the small logistical things that become big things.

Or, if anyone has experience in doing these kind of projects, and if you think you can offer help with some equipment or anything at all really and would like to join along we could definitely talk.

I do not believe myself to be a fortune teller, but it just found out my camera buddy dropped out. I was going to rent TWO HD cams for multiple angles (preferably the two actually manning a camera would be the nice HDs rather then use it as a redundant steady angle on a tripod or something).

So, I guess I can unintentionally use my own thread to ask, if anyone knows someone who would be down to help as camera man for the Burnstown gig on October 14. THe other dates I'm all flexible for a) using one HD camera or putting on tripod, but for Burnstown gig I really was looking to get 2 cameras on the floor moving around. *Also this isn't exactly a paying gig...on the flipside there aren't any costs other than ones time.

Anyways, if not no big deal, there are a few others options/people I can think of an try and contact.

Inhabitants of the Bruce Peninsula Multi-verse

As we close the door on 2010 we'd like to thank all of those who came out to our shows, took the time to explore our recordings and supported the BP vessel as it navigated the waters of a crazy crazy year.

So, it is with a heavy heart that we announce that our plans for 2011 are currently on hold.

Neil Haverty has recently been diagnosed with Leukemia.

The good news is that it is a highly treatable form of cancer that has a 95% success rate associated with Neil's treatment. He is supported by a wide network of friends and family who are standing behind him in this difficult time.

As for the band: We are not breaking up. We will not stop recording. But for the immediate future, all of our touring plans are cancelled while Neil works toward a full recovery.

What Neil needs most right now are positive vibes, well wishes, and love concoctions of the highest caliber. If you are a fan, friend or foe and would like to send Neil some healing power, please send all messages to : neilhaverty@gmail.com

On Dec. 22, 2010 Neil Haverty, one of the central voices of Bruce Peninsula, was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia

The Good News : Neil's is "the best" kind of cancer you can get according to all the doctors who have spoken with Neil and his family. There is a 95% cure rate associated with his treatment plan and an 80% chance that it won't return. He has already completed the first round of his chemotherapy and he is optimistic about a full recovery.

What Can I Do? : Support the fundraiser! All the money raised from this event will go directly to help Neil and the Haverty family to lessen the financial burden that inevitably comes with illness.

As many of you have already heard, Bruce Peninsula was forced into hiatus in December as a principal member of our band was diagnosed with a highly treatable but nonetheless challenging illness to overcome. Our hearts sunk when we heard the news and the band's standing commitments were instantly postponed as we held at the side of our friend.

A few months removed and Neil is out of the hospital and working on the next stages of his recovery. As time has rolled on, our minds have started to drift back towards the release of our completed second full-length album, Open Flames. We had signed off on the master version just one day before Neil's diagnosis, even throwing a big band party to celebrate it with copious wine and indian cuisine all over the tables. There we all got excited about a possible March release date and started to daydream about all the touring plans that had been stacking up, which would have made for some of our longest and most fulfilling trips yet.

The thought of getting back in the van is having a very positive impact on Neil's recovery, but he unfortunately won't be ready to go on the road for some time still. As a band that has always known emphatically that our songs belong on a stage, we felt that releasing the record now, without any live momentum behind it, would do a huge disservice to a record that we are truly proud of. So the decision has been made to push the album's release back into the Fall. But now for the good news! Bruce Peninsula is not just a band. We are a tight-knit group of friends with a common goal to create together and we always have our hands in many pots at once. While working on Open Flames, there would always be a band member coming to the studio to say they'd made up something new the night before or a strange four track demo crossing the internet from London to Toronto late at night. Some are small, some are borrowed, some just barely missed their chance to be on LP2. Hell, one may be the most ambitious thing we've made to date. So, rather than giving you a full-length record this month, we are pleased to introduce you to the Bush Fires on the Bruce Trail series, in which we'll present you a new little morsel of music on the 21st of each month leading into the fall of 2011 and the release of Open Flames.

We hope that you enjoy the first installment, two of our favourite cover songs, and that you'll check back here each month to see what else we've cooked up. We appreciated the ongoing support and hope you like these oddities. We sure do.

The last we heard from Toronto roots collective Bruce Peninsula, frontman Neil Haverty had been diagnosed with leukemia. In an interview with Exclaim!, the singer revealed that he had undergone chemotherapy and was hopeful for a complete recovery. Well, we have some good news: Haverty's cancer is in remission, and Bruce Peninsula are gearing up for some new releases.

In a statement to Exclaim!, Haverty explained, "They call this the 'maintenance phase.' I will still take a pill called ATRA for a year and I will check in with my doctor once a month, but I'm basically done with all the truly icky stuff."

Now that the worst is behind him, Haverty and his band are ready to put out some new music. We already knew that Bruce Peninsula's sophomore album, Open Flames, was in the can. Before they release that into the world, though, the band will unveil Bruce Trail Fire Sale. According to a press release, this is a "digital B-side series that collects one-off songs, covers, live videos... whatever we can dream up."....

Last year, a six-piece version of BP got in the van for a little tour of Michigan, Illinois and Iowa. We had a good time in Detroit and Chicago and at Knox College in Galesburg but the whole reason for the trip was to visit the fine fellows at Daytrotter.

It's a beautiful thing they have going there. Nestled atop a pizza joint in Rock Island, IL, you'd never know that the Daytrotter guys record a couple bands a day every single day at their unassuming studio. They were very inviting and patient with us, considering none of us had ever done a live-off-the-floor, get-it-right-quick taping before.

Rock Island is part of the Quad Cities, uniting with Davenport, Bettendorf and Moline. When we finished up, the DT guys pointed us over the bridge and into Iowa, where we found a casino / hotel / cruise ship that had cheap rooms. A bottle of tequila, some pizza, a little gambling and too much Wife Swap later, I can safely say it produced one of the best memories we've got.

On the last day of a recent band retreat to Dyer's Bay, sometime between breakfast and rehearsal, Ivy said "I don't really listen to new music, unless my friends made it." It sparked a healthy discussion (Bruce Peninsula can be an opinionated bunch) but in the end, no one disagreed with the sentiment.

The truth is that Bruce Peninsula could never have existed if not for the talent that orbits around it. Since the beginning, members have been recruited after showing their stripes in another project. Beyond that, the presence of local musicians and the music they make has been the source of endless inspiration in all of our lives.

In an effort to celebrate both sides of that coin, Bruce Peninsula and Southern Souls have teamed up for a series of videos featuring individual members of the band leading songs written by songwriters that they know personally.

We hope you enjoy these first four, shot a few weeks back on Toronto island. Stay tuned for further instalments, to be posted as part of the Bruce Trail Fire Sale later this summer.

Bruce Peninsula 'Open Flames' and Tour

Hand Drawn Dracula is proud to be working with BRUCE PENINSULA, who return with their sophomore full-length album, Open Flames, October 4th 2011. The multi-musician ensemble gives us 10 new, sprawling songs, drawn from the skin of a drum and sung from deep down in the gut.

It has been quite a journey. Bruce Peninsula's previous record, 2009's self-released debut, A Mountain Is A Mouth immediately caught fire, garnering countless glowing reviews and a Polaris Music Prize long-list nomination. Their raucous, big top live show, featuring at times, a 10-musician sprawl, has converted audiences across the continent with headline appearances at SXSW, Pop Montreal and Halifax Pop Explosion. Songs from that album (along with Open Flames' opening track) were used to score the full-length feature film Small Town Murder Songs, which premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival.

Bruce Peninsula spent the middle months of 2010 with their heads down, hard at work. The idea was to write quickly, second-guess less and to push musical boundaries beyond their signature, progressive-gospel sound. By the end of the year, the band was sitting on a wealth of new material and had planned a release of Open Flames in the Spring of 2010.

But, in December, as the master came into hand, the band were suddenly sideswiped when lead shouter Neil Haverty was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia. Open Flames would be forced to wait while Haverty endured treatment. The band created The Bruce Trail Fire Sale, an online campaign of new videos, covers and b-sides not featured on the LP to help calm an anxious wait. After a long and dreadful winter, Haverty is officially in remission and Bruce Peninsula is finally ready to take its next step forward. With a new choir on hand (featuring, among others, Daniela Gesundheit aka Snowblink and Tamara Lindeman aka The Weather Station), a fresh lease on life and Open Flames at the ready, Bruce Peninsula are born anew.
