Juno Pianos in the Capital

Celebrating the Juno Awards

Project description:

Inspired by the “Play Me, I’M Yours†international phenomenon where pianos pop-up in bus shelters, post offices and markets with a sign inviting passersby’s to sit down and play, Canada’s Capital provides the perfect staging for the JUNO Pianos to transform indoor public spaces around Ottawa into relaxed and fun music hangouts. From March 28th to April 1st, 2012 the public will be invited to tickle the ivories and their fancy on the JUNO pianos around town. QR Codes posted on signs by each piano will allow the public to quickly locate the pianos throughout the City and also allow easy upload of photos and videos associated with performances and visitors at each site. Juno Award nominees and local musicians will be encouraged to visit and perform at the different piano locations during the week.

Project Partners

‘JUNO Pianos in the Capital’ is looking for local institutions and businesses to partner on this project and become ‘Location Sponsors’ for this project. Location Sponsors are a pivotal part in the success of this project. All sponsorship for this project is based on in-kind services.

Ideally, partners will be able to support the project by providing a location and a piano; however, the project leads may be able to connect those who are wishing to provide a safe, accessible location and those wishing to provide a piano together to create a new location for the project.

Location Only: Provide a physical location accessible to the public where the piano will be available for public use, and signage visible. The location would ideally be accessible by the public during the project’s official dates and times (From March 28th to April 1st). Locations would also be required to assume the safekeeping and security of the piano. The Juno Pianos in the Capital Project will supply a volunteer during official project dates and provide information to the public, but outside those hours the responsibility of the piano and signage would be on the location sponsor. If space permits, the location will also supply several chairs to serve as a waiting area for musicians and for an audience viewing area. Ideally, the location of the piano will have good wireless reception or free Wi-Fi, so users can access the information available through the QR code programming.

Piano: Piano sponsors provide the piano for the use of the project. They ensure the delivery, pick-up and tuning of the piano. The piano must be available on-location during the official dates of the project (March 28th to April 1st, 2012).

Signage provided at each location will include (but may not be limited to):

• One large poster board with JUNO Pianos In the Capital description, project partner logos (including location and piano partners), QR code, map of other pianos locations and piano use etiquette

Location, piano and signage sponsors will be recognized on the signage at the site as well as on the webpage detailing the specific pianos location.

The Juno Pianos in the Capital Project will arrange volunteers for the piano locations:

One volunteer will be at each site during official project times. Volunteers will responsible for providing information to visitors on the specific piano location and the JUNO Pianos in the Capital Project. Volunteers will also inform visitors of the piano etiquette and of the desired activity at the site, of the QR Code usage and photo and video uploading capabilities. Please note that volunteers are not responsible for the condition of the piano during off hours; that is the responsibility of the location sponsor.

We look forward to you joining the list of participants!
