Roy Hodgson was wheeling his shopping trolley across the supermarket car park when he noticed an old lady struggling with her bags of shopping. He stopped and asked, "Can you manage dear?" To which the old lady replied, "No way. You got yourself into this fucking mess, don't ask me to sort it out..."

The US captain Clint Dempsey has stepped up his planning for life after football, recording a 13-track rap album under his stage name “Deuceâ€.

The 31-year-old former Fulham and Spurs forward, who scored against Ghana after 31 seconds on Monday, spent two weeks before the tournament in Los Angeles recording the album, “The Reduxâ€, with the Texas rapper XO, who also collaborated with him on his 2006 World Cup track Don’t Tread.

Dempsey, now with the Seattle Sounders, raps on the new album about his journey from rags to riches, about being “Captain America†and about scoring goals – “banging Gsâ€.

He told The Wall Street Journal: “We just were having fun with it and it ended up being an album.â€

Fellow rapper and friend Mike Chehadé told the paper the track could make the US side more intimidating. “We’re not known as a soccer powerhouse – we’re almost known for being soft. But Clint has this edge.

“He’ll just call you sometimes and start free-styling – he doesn’t even say hello … I’m not saying he’s Eminem, but he’s definitely qualified.â€

In March Ronaldinho also starred in a rap collaboration, Let’s Drink featuring DJ Dennis, with the chorus: “Boot the glass up high, let’s drink / We will enjoy life, we drink / I’m full of money, let’s drink.â€
