  1. I much prefer Belize over Cuba. I've been to Cuba three times and noticed each time it seemed to have been spoiled a little more by the tourism.

If your looking for an all inclusive in Cuba, we really liked Breezes Jibacoa. In between Havana and Varadero. No kids. Good snorkeling reef off the beach. Decent food. Stayed there a couple of times.

  2. I didn't realize that I had become the odd man out for not wearing a helmet. I never really considered wearing a helmet. I guess mostly for the uncomfort factor. I still see ski/snoboard helmets as one of those newfangled contraptions. Can't teach an old dog new tricks?

I don't wear a bike helmet either. So there...

We now live in such a culture of fear and safety...

  3. Another free option for tv I just heard about... Apparently digital and even some HD channels are being broadcast over the air. You can get more modern rabbit ears antennas that actually tune in these digital and HD signals, for like $30. Apparently it's actually better quality than some of the satellites and cable boxes. Seriously. Some people in Toronto are getting 30+ channels.

Do a search for "over the air tv".

I'm definitely going to get a new antenna and try it out. Internet is still superior but it's nice to know there is a live version available for when you blow your monthly ISP download cap.

  4. Jay - There is no service provider or data plan etc... It's not actually a cell phone, it's an internet machine. To make a phone call you could use Skype or Gizmo. With Gizmo you can get your own toronto VOIP number so people can call you.

The only real catch with the Nokia tablets is that you need some kind of internet connection. Whether it's a hotspot or your piggy backing on someones un-secured wifi, or connecting through a bluetooth cell phone, etc... GPS works without internet though because it connects to free satellites.

I love my tablet. I can keep up with client emails on the go, make updates to web pages and ftp files, surf the web with a real web browser, etc etc... It's awesome.

If what you really need is a 'phone' though it probably isn't the right device. But if you need a mini computer/internet machine/AV player and you don't want to pay a thieving phone company you can't beat it. But like I said you can still use VOIP phone apps if you can connect to internet.

ebay and craigslist are great sources for the Nokia tablets. The n800 is a fair bit cheaper, but the n810 has the slide out keyboard which is a nice touch. I got mine used for a little under $250. One time cost, no plans, no fees...

  5. I know this thread is about iPhones but if anyone is looking for a cheaper more open source alternative, I highly reccomend checking out the Nokia n series, specifically the n810. It's basically a mini portable linux computer. All apps are free and open source. You don't need any kind of data plan or service package, it runs of wifi and hotspots. It has a build in GPS and runs skype. This solution won't work for everyone but it's a damn fine piece of hardware that many prefer to the iPhone.
