  1. May I present another unrelated (?) idea. In one of my classes, the students are writing a persuasive/argumentative essay on a variety of topics. One is should there be restrictions on handguns? Now, (as I am sure you are already aware of of) in the Declaration of Independence (which defines the American constitution) it states "the right to bear arms". However, no where in that document does it state that you should have one, it just provides you with the rights to chose to own one. My question is: who then is responsible for the fact that most Americans actually own a weapon?

First, esteemed colleague, the Constitution does in its Second Amendment, guarantee the right to bear arms. However this was not your point.

It was created around the idea that early Americans weren't necessary convinced that

    a) They weren't entirely convinced that the British weren't coming back

b)They weren't entirely convinced they could trust their newly minted Federal government and reserved the right to keep a state militia (now known as the National Guard)

Add this + a civil war - slavery + frontier expansion and just shy of the turn of the century you have a culture in which roughly about 1/3 of the population owns a gun (which is more than the roughly 1/4 of Americans that do today)

Post WWII chalk it up mostly to the military industrial complex, with a few pinches of healthy commie paranoia, racial inequality, and Mr Moore's thesis on the culture of fear.

Back on topic: I'm teaching a little refresher on North Korea right now to a generation whose primary exposure to this meglomaniac is this:

I've got to admit, all I can hear in my head is

"Do you have any idea how fuckin busy I am, Hans Brix? Werr, Fuck you! You want inspection? Werr, inspect that! You butt-fucking piece of shit! What, you think I'm just a petty arms dealer? I'm pranning the attack! Congratulations Team America, you have stopped nothing..."

  2. You have questions' date=' I have answers.

If the CD case was Talking heads then why did a Petula Clark song play??

I quite liked the episode...looking forward to see how the rest of the losties are making out though...I kinda wish they had a 2 hour season premiere...

I think the producers are just f-in with us. The actual CD that got put in based on its serial numbers is a Son Volt CD (I didn't research this. The lords of the internet did it for me.

  3. Not to torture you too much, old pal, but the first five minutes really have to be seen to be believed.

To those of you that saw:

The CD case was actually the case for the Talking Head's Speaking in Tongues.

The book is Stephen King's Carrie

The Dharma logo is a Hydra

    Ethan was the plumber

You have questions, I have answers.

  4. Jaimoe, between Deadwood and Battlestar Galactica, you are my TV soulmate!

WARNING TO THE UNINITIATED: Do not attempt to hop in the BSG world without watching the seasons in order (Miniseries, Season One, Season Two)

It is one of the best allegories to the current state of the America's War on Terror, use of torture, corruption of gov't etc going on TV.

One part original series, one part West Wing, one part Top Gun, one part pure awesomeness.

  5. I am stoked.

For all of you Losties that were unaware there was a full on game going on this summer which revealed some very important information to the whole plot.

Rachel Blake (character) attempted to bring the truth forward about the Hanso Foundation and the whereabouts of its leader, Alvar Hanso.

Both of these videos are by the creators of Lost and part of the Lost story!!!!!

Click here for Rachel's final discovery, the whereabouts of Alvar Hanso

I accidently found out the opening 5 minutes and all I can say is: WOW!

    Can't wait.

    PS Invasion canceled.

  6. Yes! I willed this to happen today in the car ride this morning.

The Stills - Without Feathers - YOU MUST TRY THIS ALBUM OUT!!! Great rock from Montreal. If you like the Spoons and good riff rock, dig it.

Beck - The Information - I'm a Beck so I know it takes awhile to grow on me but Strange Apparation (an Exile on Main Street style rambler) is an instant must have.

Phish Deer Creek Run - July 21-23/2003 - Hands down my favorite post hiatus run - Best (and only one of its kind) Scents and Subtle Sounds out there. My favorite Gumbo as well on the 22th.

Donavon Frankreiter - Move By Yourself - Groove it out!

The Radiators - Best of 68-74 - Re-Arrange cover by Built To Spill turned me on to these guys.

Continued honourable mentions for being stuck in rotation for 2 straight months go to Band of Horses and MMJ's Okonknos.

  7. *takes devil's advocate hat off*

*replaces it with a half good/half dumb looking one*

The album will probably be good. So long as the gods of overproduction don't overdo it or too much of the original Slip magic is lost in the reach for the zeitgeist.

The MMJ tour again will no doubt open up new markets and be a positive experience.

That being said, the curse of the opening band is to have to win fickle and often narrow minded (or at the very least star blinded) audiences. If the majority of folks are not interested/not impressed/not effected enough to say more than "Those guys weren't bad.......WOOOOOOO JIMMY!", crushed dreams and one more gig at the Electric Factory is all the boys have left to look for.

Ask anyone who plays baseball. If you go up and try to hit homeruns all the time, more often than not, you strike out.

To close, Go Slip! I want all the best for this incredible band. Prove this doubting Thomas all wrong.

  8. It's official.

I like 18 Steps more than I like Bar 17.

I don't get it. How is the bonus disc the better album? Is it ike an in-joke?

The playing is better, the production is more sparse and less cluttered.

Warning: Trey's singing on the first track is enough to push stop.

Push through. Track 2 and 3 are quite enjoyable. I've always liked Discern and this version is outstanding.

Warning 2: Still contains unnecesary horns and strings throughout.

The last two tracks are really, really nice acoustic tunes.

    Baffling....6.5 for Step 18.

  9. *dons devil's advocate hat*

Back to the original concern (ie new album+major label = big commericial success), aren't we all jumping the gun by assuming that

    a)the album is good

b)the tour with MMJ will be a positive thing\

This could be end but not in the way people think. What happens if this bombs?

  10. I have this friend. He's a first class top rate harmonica player. Then, inexplicably, he decided he was going to focus on two things, songwriting/singing. While he is a decent songwriter, he lacks the natural talent and brillance that he used to bring to the harp (he doesn't even play anymore)

Trey Anatasio seems to suffer from the same ailment. And while I would never, ever, begrudge anyone their happiness, it always amazes me when they fail to see that the path they pursuing is clearly one that pales in comparison to their earlier genius.

The album has some nice guitar playing, but overall suffers from fairly weak songwriting. The lyrics fail to inspire, the vocal presentation varies from soft to downright weak and the compositions, while ultimately being more complex than Shine's drivel, still lack any real hook. Some like Dragonfly have even lost any momentum that they gain live by a slowing of the tempo and lack of "jam" development.

It's tough being an aging rocker, let alone an aging solo rocker. On a Trey solo scale, with first album scoring an 8, Shine scoring a 2, the most I can give this one is 5, and unfortunately, that's mostly due to the inclusion of Bennevento, Russo, Gordon and others.

Serves me right for listening to Deer Creek 2003 right before this came out I guess.......

  11. Hi Chives2,

Sincerely, some cool choices for your Polaris. Wax Mannequin and Peaches(she used to be a teacher!) have crazy talent.

However, in "those who throw stones shouldn't live in glass houses" category.

    serisouly

    Budah

    unforgivealbe

shouldn't be in the same paragraph as
