  1. Dan Griffin & the Regrets [11:30pm] (I'm the pedal steel player, we're from Hamilton) http://www.myspace.com/dangriffinmusic From Toronto via Guelph - Tiiu [10:45pm] http://www.myspace.com/tiiumillistver From Toronto - Nick Rose & the Magnolias [9:45pm] (guitarist with Sweet Thing) http://www.myspace.com/nickrosemusic $6. Come check it!
  2. Bullmoose are buddies of mine. Bassist and drummer are twin brothers. Heavy hitting trio, big riffs, with much homage to Zep, Sabbath, Big Sugar, C'mon, etc. For some reason their new record makes me think of Humble Pie - in any event it shows remarkable artistic growth since their last one, and that's always impressive. It was produced by Jonathan Cummins (Doughboys/Bionic). Great dudes too. http://www.myspace.com/bullmooseband
  3. I think we're on at 9:30 but perhaps whiteymuseum can chime in here. Tonight's gonna be a little hectic...after our set we're packing up and booting it to Guelph where Charlemagne is playing at Jimmy Jazz with the Sweet Homewreckers...Charlemagne of course featuring Dan Griffin on keys and Regrets drummer Tim Oxford. I'll be sitting in on steel at the Jazz as well. Crazy!
  4. CUFF THE DUKE (CD Release) Rock Plaza Central Dan Griffin & the Regrets This Thurs, Oct 25 at Casbah. Tickets are $12 in advance and I've got a bunch to sell, so PM me and I'll get 'em to you. Otherwise I think it's $15 at the door. Great lineup if I do say so myself! Hope to see a few folks out!
  5. Saw it a couple weeks ago in Toronto and it's sweet ass! Enjoy fellas.
  6. In England, Smokey the Bear is not the forest fire prevention representative. They have Smaquis the Frog. It's just like a bear, but it's a frog. I think it's a better system, I think we should adopt it. Because bears can be mean, but frogs are always cool. Never has there been a frog hopping toward me, and I thought "Man, I'd better play dead. Here comes that frog..." You never say here comes that frog in a nervous manner. It's always optimistic. Hey here comes that frog, all right. Maybe he will settle near me so I can pet him, and stick him in a mayonnaise jar, with a stick and a leaf, to recreate what he's used to. And I'm pretty sure I'd have to punch some holes in the lid, because he's damn sure used to air. Then I can observe him, and he won't be doing much in his 16-ounce world.
  7. Where's kookycanooky on this one? He's Hamilton's most eligible bachelor. Relaxin at Long Point, after taking in a meteor shower and sleeping on the beach Doin what he does best Ow ow! Let's start the bidding ladies!
  8. I have two questions 1) Is DJ ?uesquescest the same as Craig Quesquescest? 2) Can I play in the monster jam?
  9. A special guest has just been confirmed to sit in for a portion of our set...
  10. I'm appalled that two such avid music fans would even have to ask, but, YES: better than Floyd at Ivor Wynne, and both Dead shows, combined. Thank you for playing, Willy and Bones . Think of the value here people! Cover is $5 and there will be 9 musicians onstage! Check out the myspaces above and I bet you'll find music that interests you. On Charlemagne's page I recommend 'Oh The Boss Is Coming', it's a real fist-pumper, great stop-time feel; 'Ballad of Huge Chavez' is a pure sugary Motown tune; 'Champagne Socialist' has a real rootsy kind of feel. http://www.myspace.com/wearecharlemagne On Dan's page I recommend 'Summertime' for its pure Harvest-era Neil Young vibe and 'East Coast' for its sheer catchiness. http://www.myspace.com/dangriffinmusic And on the Bucks page I'm inclined to recommend all four tunes...but 'Word Gets Around' and 'Edmonton' are the two that people seem to like the most. http://www.myspace.com/thesurlyyoungbucks
  11. This Saturday night, October 13th, the Pepper Jack Cafe will host a very special concert event as part of the annual C+C Music Festival. The members of Charlemagne, Dan Griffin & The Regrets and The Surly Young Bucks - known locally as bands affiliated with one another, sharing band members between them - will all congregate onstage in a massive nine-person performance of material spanning all three groups' catalogues. This monstrous supergroup will be comprised of: Max Kerman - vocals, guitar, piano Dan Griffin - vocals, guitar, keyboards, drums Mike DeAngelis - vocals, guitar, bass Nick Dika - bass Aaron Goldstein - vocals, guitar, pedal steel (<-that's me) Adam Melnick - vocals, keyboards, bass Dave Griffin - acoustic guitar Mike Atcheson - vocals, bass, trumpet Tim Oxford - drums Instrument-switching and microphone-sharing will be prevalent. Expect more than a few surprises and a whole lot of fun. This is, of course, a one-time event and you won't want to miss it! Cover is a scant $5 and you'll also be treated to three other fine acts on this bill: Circuit Breaker, Chris Briscoe and The Feels. The C+C Music Festival was founded in 2006 by staffs of CFMU and C101.5, campus radio stations at McMaster University and Mohawk College, respectively. The festival's goal is to showcase the vast amount of independant musical talent existing in Hamilton by presenting a stellar five-act bill on each of Hamilton's available club stages on one particular night. A two-disc compilation was issued in both 2006 and 2007 in connection with the festival, and the 2006 compilation charted Canada-wide on campus radio. The 2007 compilation is expected to accomplish the same feat once it begins charting and copies will be available free of charge to the first 100 people in the door this Saturday. The compilation features both Charlemagne and Dan Griffin as well as other local favourites Circuit Breaker, Matt Paxton, Wax Mannequin, Joel Elliot, A Northern Chorus, B.A. Johnston, The Rest, Young Rival, the Mississippi Kings and many more. http://www.myspace.com/wearecharlemagne http://www.myspace.com/dangriffinmusic http://www.myspace.com/thesurlyyoungbucks http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=5823779365
  12. Wow, great show tonight. First time I've actually known more than one or two songs; I recognized Dark Don't Hide It, Hammer Down, Talk to Me Devil, Just Be Simple, and Farewell Transmission (!). I was surprised to hear selections from first album at all. Different bass player on this tour and for the last half of the show he moved over to pedal steel and they brought out the Watson Twins' bass player to finish the set. Good times!
  13. Kev-O I think this will be directly up your alley! They can be laid-back at times (but not in a Dead way...more in a Neil way) but it can also be loud and rocking too (but more in a Rust Never Sleeps way than a Ragged Glory way). Molina used to release records under the moniker Songs:Ohia. From the mid-90's until 2003 he released something like 9 records under that name. The last Songs:Ohia record was called Magnolia Electric Co., and he continued under that name thereafter (it's really the collective name of the band I suppose). Between 2003 and 2006 they released 4 albums and an EP, and Molina pressed two solo records and a solo 7". He has always been known for writing a ton of music, even more than Secretly Canadian (his label) could release - so at the top of this tour they released a 4CD/1DVD boxed set called Sojourner to cover a bunch of material that hasn't yet been released. The point, though, is that I personally only own the first MEC record and so I'm not particularly familiar with the material they play live these days (there's so much to draw from after all). But I've seen them twice already with very little knowledge of the rest of the catalogue and I've really enjoyed it.
  14. http://www.magnoliaelectricco.com http://myspace.com/magnoliaelectricco Anybody else headed down to Lee's tonight? This band is awesome in a Neil Young & Crazy Horse way. Advance tickets were $13.50 so I'd expect a $15 door charge but I'm telling you, rock and roll fans, they're worth it. I've gone to see them twice already knowing a small portion of their catalogue and been very impressed. Furthermore, Pitchfork photos indicate that Molina is sporting a hell of a mustache lately. They're on at midnight, and the Watson Twins - who are also great - are on at 11.
  15. Oral Groove is not a band but rather a queer-positive (but inclusive) party featuring a couple DJ's. These parties attract scores and scores of women, straight and gay. Phunkyb is the promoter and she does a fine job. SAT OCT 6 BLACKJACKET, The Race, BDM Bake Sale, More TBA @ Casbah -- 1PM Matinee -- LIC/AA :: $8 STEELTOWN SIRENS BURLESQUE plus Eshe the Belly Dancer, 63 Monroe, guests @ Casbah -- 9PM -- 19+ :: $10 I've heard the Sirens Burlesque show is hit and miss. Not exactly true to vintage burlesque. You should have been here last weekend Kev-O, we hosted a house show in my basement that was lots of fun.
  16. Don't know if it's necessary for me to reiterate, as I mention it every time...but I'm Dan Griffin's steel player, and I'll be playing with Matt Paxton too if I can get off work early enough. And yes Alexis, the cheaper cover is to draw people in earlier. Without the cover incentive you run the risk of the earlier acts playing to nobody. I think Shane Philip is on first. Come to this show, the Wooden Sky are great and so are Dan Griffin & The Regrets (and I can say that even though I'm a member)!
  17. I would bet the guy is ecstatic that people even care to download the record. Propogation of his record, if it's any good, will hopefully lead to some decent buzz and maybe some press, andd maybe he'll be lucky enough for a (somewhat established) small label to throw him a couple grand to hit the road.
  18. That's actually hilarious
